SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Being a communist would no longer be a fireable offense for California government employees under a bill passed Monday by the state Assembly.

Lawmakers narrowly approved the bill to repeal part of a law enacted during the Red Scare of the 1940s and '50s when fear that communists were trying to infiltrate and overthrow the U.S. government was rampant. The bill now goes to the Senate.

It would eliminate part of the law that allows public employees to be fired for being a member of the Communist Party.

Employees could still be fired for being members of organizations they know advocate for overthrowing the government by force or violence.

The bill updates an outdated provision in state law, said Assemblyman Rob Bonta, the San Francisco Bay Area Democrat who authored the measure.

Some Assembly Republicans said the Cold War-era law should not be changed.

Assemblyman Randy Voepel, a Southern California Republican who fought in the Vietnam War, said communists in North Korea and China are "still a threat."

"This bill is blatantly offensive to all Californians," said Assemblyman Travis Allen, a Republican who represents a coastal district in Southern California. "Communism stands for everything that the United States stands against."

Trump says that China is OK by him...he and the Chinese President Xi like and respect one another...China says it will help with NKorea...and are open to negotiating trade deals and establishing pertnerships with us in the Asian sphere...

...so what communist country is a real threat to the US? Ideas and systems of government aren't real enemies to a free and powerful nation like ours...it's all about what they do...Russia is no longer a Communist nation: it is more like a Presidential republic, kinda like our system...but they are our most serious threat...

...we gonna start demonizing democratic republics?

Freedom of speech, there can be no exeptions. I spoke with a nut case yesterday who stated repeatedly that the Holocaust never happened. I will defend his right to speak his mind even though he is unequivocally wrong.

With an attitude like that, you'd be well advised to steer clear of Berkeley (CA), particularly the CAL campus ... they take pride in calling themselves the originators of the free speech movement, but it turns out that's only for speech that is approved by the liberal left ... contrary views are not only disallowed, they are often met with strong opposition in the form of street rioters who use all means of violence to "defend" themselves

Funny you should say that... you seem to encourage stifling the rich with higher taxes, and you also seem to agree with socialist policies, which are quite similar to communism.

Socialism is merely communism 'light'. Both are pretty much the opposite of capitalism.

With the US moving toward fascism, the fear of communists seems like classic Fox misdirection.....

Stinky, the Holocaust normally refers to the murder of 6 million Jews by Hitler. But if you want to lump them together be complete, you left out the Armenians. Also, many consider there to have been a black Holocaust in the USA, hence the black holocaust museum. I do not think holocaust is the right term for what happened to black Americans, but cannot think of a better term.

The ones that appear closest to fascism are on the left ....from free speech to free enterprise system , they want more control over the system... Typically in the name of justice which will only bring about the opposite if carried out to completion.
