White Peoples can't make Burritos..!!

Kali Wilgus and Liz “LC” Connelly, owners of Portland pop-up shop Kooks Burritos, just wanted to make and sell some really great burritos. So when they were on a trip to Puerto Nuevo, Mexico, they “picked the brains” of the local tortilla ladies and brought those recipes back to the States.

“I picked the brains of every tortilla lady there in the worst broken Spanish ever, and they showed me a little of what they did,” Connelly told Willamette Weekly. “They told us the basic ingredients, and we saw them moving and stretching the dough similar to how pizza makers do before rolling it out with rolling pins. They wouldn’t tell us too much about technique, but we were peeking into the windows of every kitchen, totally fascinated by how easy they made it look. We learned quickly it isn’t quite that easy.”

Whelp, apparently this interview sparked an Internet ****storm, which ended in Kooks Burritos shutting down and the two white women who owned it scrubbing social media of the business’ existence.

Wilgus and Connelly were accused of cultural appropriation by the Internet mob, and even the theft of PoC’s recipes.

During an impromptu Christmastime road trip last year to Puerto Nuevo, Mexico, Kali Wilgus and Liz “LC” Connelly lost their minds over tortillas.

“Now that you all boldly and pretty **** unapologetically stole the basis of these women’s livelihoods, you can make their exact same product so other white ppl don’t have to be inconvenienced dealing with a pesky brown middle woman getting in their way,” wrote a woman in the interview’s comment section.

The women became the subject of local editorials and, of course, **** Mic.com fanned the flames with an article, “These white cooks bragged about stealing recipes from Mexico to start a Portland business.”

The company’s Yelp reviews are flooded with one-star reviews from the PC police, using terms like “white mediocrity” and “Latinx” while comparing Kooks Burritos to colonialism.

Soon after the controversy, a list of white-owned “appropriative” businesses began circulating online, featuring some of Portland’s top restaurants. The list also suggested the nearest “PoC alternatives” to each white business.

So to recap, a couple of white ladies learned to make burritos good while on vacation and now they are literally comparable to Hernán Cortés.

Good job, cultural appropriation warriors! You made the world a better place by shutting down a local small business.

DUMB! Imagine if idiots like these complainers had a platform like this through all of history. Nobody would have good food that originated in other areas of the world. I hate the people of this world these days.

Lesson to be learned: Don't tell anyone anything. If they would have kept this to themselves, there wouldn't have been an issue.

Maybe we can get the cultural appropriation warriors to guilt China into not duplicating everything we build... Think

LMFO, read some yelp comments... usual lib suspects trolling the poor tortilla makers.

WTF is wrong with people?!?!

They just want to sell burritos out of a roach coach, these people act like they're trying to conquer the world and send food trucks to all the work sites using illegals picked up at home depot or something.

I made some this evening with catfish. Flesh wasn't firm enough. Really couldn't taste the fish. Gonna have to see if I can find some frozen cod fillets down here.

poor cod...read a great book about the cod recommended by the MIA pdxstogieman years ago. I eat it on a regular dinner rotation but never in tacos.

What MACS said !

I'd imagine that there are parts of the US where decent fish is difficult to find, whether contained in tacos or not ... but good fish tacos are a real treat ... just thinkin' about these makes my mouth water ... gives me a lunch idea ...

On a side note: MACS have you tried Blue Water ?? Saw the place on TV recently and put it on my bucket list for the next time I'm down that way ... better than Oscar's ??

We have a Blue Water Grill in Temecula. I haven't eaten there yet. I ate there when it was Fish House Veracruz... decent, not overly noteworthy.

If by Oscar's you mean Pat and Oscar's... I have never eaten there.

my mom despises fish... I finally convinced her to try a fish taco and while she didn't fall in love with it, she eats a couple every time I bring home rockfish now... it's not like eating fish... I never order fish at a restaurant and I rarely eat fish on its own... fish tacos are a totally different experience...

I saw that place on DDnD, drove down to San Diego, stood in line for nearly an hour... and was underwhelmed...only so so...

same experience with Tommy's Joynt in San Francisco...Fieri raved on air about the food there...stopped in when I was up there, stood in line, and was disappointed...

Wife and I went to OB Noodle House after seeing it on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.

Waited... and it was worth it. Excellent Pho, and fried rice.

I LOVE it when people start sentences with...."I'm not a racist, but...."

Well....I'm not a racist, but I also LOVE it when white guys make burritos. I grew up in the upper midwest a long, long way from anyone for whom tortillas and beans were staples. So, the burritos I got were generally untouched by beans and rice....and that's the way I still like 'em....meat, cheese, sour cream, picante....more meat and more cheese....and some green sauce...hold the beans....hold the rice
