Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., told Fox News he left just before the shooting. As he walked to his car, a man asked DeSantis if it was Republicans or Democrats practicing. About three minutes the shooting began, DeSantis said.
The shooting began at 7:15 a.m. and lasted about 10 minutes, sources told Fox News.

A gunman believed to be a supporter of former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders sprayed a hail of bullets at a GOP baseball practice Wednesday morning, injuring House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and four others before U.S. Capitol Police took down the rifle-wielding assailant.

The shooter, who had a violent history including arrests for battery, resisting arrest and drunken driving, was identified as 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson, of Illinois, Fox News confirmed. President Trump said Hodgkinson died from injuries sustained when he was shot by police.

"I have just been informed that the alleged shooter at the Republican baseball practice is someone who apparently volunteered on my presidential campaign," Sanders said in a statement. "I am sickened by this despicable act. Let me be as clear as I can be. Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms."

President Trump addressed the nation before noon and revealed Hodgkinson died in police custody.

Clearly the problem is the democratic party, it must be controlled, no one wants to make it go away, just some common sense controls:

Mandatory background checks for all democratic party members.

Extreme vetting of all persons joining the democratic party

Democrat free zones, especially schools and college campuses

Restriction on who can become a democrat party member, no felons,.

Yes, it's going to hurt, but remember, "It's for the Children!"

By Todd Starnes

It was a bad day for America. It was an ugly day.

A former Bernie Sanders campaign volunteer who hated President Trump opened fire on Republicans during baseball practice Wednesday. House Majority Whip Steve Scalise is in critical condition. Two incredibly brave Capitol Police officers were also injured along with a House aide.

Rep. Mark Walker told NBC News it appeared the "gunman was there to kill as many Republican members as possible."

Rep. Rodney Davis blamed what he called "political rhetorical terrorism.

"This political discourse has led to gunfire," the Illinois Republican, said.

What I'm about to say is politically incorrect, but it needs to be said.

Our great nation is teetering on the brink of political anarchy. And the blame lies with Hollywood and public universities and left-wing activists.

Their hateful rhetoric over the past year -- their quest to remove President Trump from office - has now given birth to bloodshed.

This time at the hands of a man who hated President Trump - a man who wanted to kill as many Republicans as he could.

Good people gunned down because of their political affilaition.

Make no mistake - the man who pulled the trigger bears the responsibility for the bloodshed.

But we would be foolish if we did not address the festering anti-Trump cancer that has infected the left.

What about the D-list comedian who beheaded the president or the taxpayer-funded production called, "Killing Republicans" or the Shakespearean drama where Caesar was depicted as President Trump?

What about the high school teacher who made a bet on whether the president would be assassinated or the one who pretended to execute the president inside her classroom?

Or how about the professor who said Republicans must be executed and the president must hang? Or the other professor who said House Republicans should be lined up and shot?

On Wednesday - those professors nearly got their wish - when a baseball field came perilously close to becoming a killing field.

We can be better than that, America. We must be better than that.

Hope the congressman and the two police officers have a complete and quick recovery...

...despicable and cowardly act to shoot innocent people, regardless of their political beliefs...

...wonder if Mr. Starnes was similarly outraged when Gabby Giffords was shot...when the abortion doctors were killed...when a theater production of the Shakespearean drama Caesar depicted a black man, like Obama...when a likeness of Obama was hung from a noose... when the report was published about hate crimes rising since Trump became president...

some stuff is making me think that some people thought Travis Bickel acted cuz of hate.
Swing and a miss.

Hate is hate. Anger is anger, both acceptable emotions.

But psychotic rage can be attached on to any thing, politics, bankers, different races, sitcom actors...and NEVER speaks for the cause it pretends to represent.

We really should stop the partisan bickering early on. Much like morality, mental illness is not the property of any political party (nazi excluded).

Re: 31/32 - I can't speak to Starnes' feelings on the Gifford shooting, but there is no doubt he is a partisan hack. I don't like to read his stuff, mostly because it's too much faux outrage, and always partisan.

When anyone innocent gets shot, how can either side not feel bad for them?

I actually do think that it had nothing to do with his mind set, other than giving his rage a cause. It's likely the rage had always been there. Travis Bickel didn't really have a political cause, but he sure got worked up!

In another time it may have been a series of parking lot incidents or road rage, or the food was cold just one time to many.

To do something this insane takes insanity. This guy has been springing small leaks of violence and rage for over a decade, perhaps he could no longer contain it as well any more.

If I were to be convinced that politics could push a borderline person to hideous behavior, I'd say the current divisiveness that has been tearing the country apart was the cause. And no single side can own that.

Like , where was he?

In the parking lot?
In the stands?
I HEARD vague references he had an AR-15?
What did the COPS have?

All's I truly know,
Is that it takes BIG BALLS FOR A COP
WITH A 9mm Pistol to go up against an AR-15...
Those CAPITAL POLICE ARE HERO's.

When Gabby Giffords was shot EVERYONE was outraged.

And nobody said "I wonder if so-and-so would be outraged if a republican was shot?"

Some things transcend politics on the human level.

Or at least they should.

Tail I agree.

I find it weird that even in here folks are trying to point at the other side. Sad even. And yes if someone did similar in the past equally sad. I expect it from the partisan "starns" of both sides. It's a cottage industry. But from normal people I do not.

this "yea but so and so did it first" crap to to defend the indefensible is old and most of us would not accept that from our children.

Prayers for the congressman and others hurt yesterday.

Hodgkinson belonged to a Facebook group called "Terminate the Republican Party," and apparently maintained two Facebook pages that featured angry and sometimes violent rants against President Trump.

I remember back when Bush was President everyone, Dems anyways, were running around in fear of being charged with sedition and stuff for expressing their views... and of course it never happened.. the stuff going on today is 100x worse.. it's not hard to see.... Mellow

Drafter that kind of crap should be outrageous and unacceptable from either side of the aisle. (yet legal) It's amazing how selective our memories can be based on our point of view. Go back and read a few things in here that are pretty whacked out as well.

This guy was a nut case that found a reason to justify his actions. A bogus reason but a reason none the less. There is plenty of blame to go equally around and I hope all sides tone things down, but in the end its on this nut case.

And to be honest I don't find the garbage you posted by starns, or the similar crap from the other side of the aisle useful or helpful in the slightest. If anything it becomes part of the problem. His slant is one sided, the problem is not.
