Luxury Crossover or small SUV Recommendation?

Difficult decisions in the tailgater clan.
Dad's recent fender bender has prompted us to take away his driving license.
Early Alzheimer's and it ain't getting better.

They need a new car and think a small SUV or Crossover would be better than a sedan. Easier in and out from the seat.

they'd like some "luxury" feel to it.

Audi?
Buick?

I haven't been in the market for an SUV in a long time, and mine was for family so I have no idea about the market.

I'm thinking between $30k and $45k.
Recent model used is OK.

Dad won't be driving, but he's is a big 6' 4" tall, so leg room and seat roominess is a must.

What you'all think?

How about leaving your dad with dignity and having his license reinstated.

Highlanders are pretty nice and reliable (know a couple people that have them). Don't know how much power they need, I think the biggest engine they come with is a v6.

Skip the Subaru Crosstrek, not a fit for his situation.
Go for USA or Honda soft ride.

Tail I'm truly sorry to hear about your dad. Pray
I've got a Nissan Murano that has been a really nice SUV and I've seen a ton of the Rogues (which are more in your $ range) on the road and they get pretty good reviews.

Just talked with Mom and with her trade in they're looking upwards of $50 to $55k if there is a difference to the lower priced models.
Nameplate means nothing to them.

Nothing says "dignity" quite like getting t-boned because you pulled out onto the road when you shouldn't.

Up until this I would have said the Acura MDX. Hate to agree with "T" on anything.

Seriously, I recommend giving the Acura MDX a look. The little brother RDX is probably to small for your dad at 6' 4".

I feel your pain. My mom had early onset and now at 73 has lost pretty much all speech function and has no idea who I am. Its tough but you have to do it for his safety.

Get him a Ram 2500 4X4 with a ranch hand grill and bumper. That's what we do with all the old men down here and they drive into their 90's.

HEY! I think we prolly agree on huskys, booze, cigars, women and more than you know politically other than all the things you are wrong about....

and I really like the MDX. I drive a Pilot now, but if I think the MDX is worth the extra coin.

Chevy Traverse, my wife replaced her Z28 Camaro with a Traverse. She is 5' 2" and loves it and I'm 6' 1" and can also drive it very comfortably. I've can also comfortably ride in the second row seats.

My wife has a 2012 Lexus ES 350. The RX 350 has the same engine, and frame I think, and that Toyota 3.5 liter is a damn good engine. Toyota reliability and longevity. Wife's got 52k on her odo right now and we've had zero issues in 5+ years of ownership.

I've changed her tires, but she's still on original brakes.

Everyone forgets about a Lincoln Navigator off-lease purchase.

You're 6'4". Something small isn't going to work.

Hey, I did say seriously.

Wife is currently in a 2010 Honda Crosstour and it has been a great ride with no maintenance issues other than routine stuff.

As of right now we are leaning toward the Acura RDX as her next ride due to the fact that we don't need the size of the MDX or Pilot.

Did learn today that Honda is bringing the Crosstour back for 2018 and may result in me having to do a little more research.

As stated the wife is currently driving the Crosstour and I had a 04 TL and would have to say that these were the best two cars that he have owned as far as workmanship and dependability.

In that price range, Consumer Reports' standout midsized SUVs are: Lexus RX350. Mercedes Benz GLE350 and Audi MDX. I suggest Dad's driver taking them all for a test drive...and having Dad get comfortable in the passenger seat to see which one is best suited for his size.

You can prolly get a bigger SUV at that price range, in luxury category, if you buy one or two year certified used: Audi Q7, BMW X5, Buick Enclave. Keep in mind the bigger ones may be more difficult to maneuver in tight spaces and more difficult to get in and out of.. have the person who'll do most of the driving for Dad test drive those too.

You can get a new one comfortably equipped for around 40k if you're a decent negotiator. A certified 1-2 year old model could be low to mid 30's.

Get him a surplus Sherman tank and remove the turret. He can get T-boned by a train and still walk away.

While I think the Porsche Cayenne would be an excellent choice, the price is a bit forbidding ... that Lexus 350 is what comes immediately to mind when I read your list of requirements ...

I disagree with the suggestions of a Navigator or other huge tank ... particularly if mom is going to do a lot (if not most or all) of the driving ... she'd feel as if she were piloting a school bus in a Navigator and it's IMO overkill ...

The Lexus 350 is by far the most comfortable of the SUV/Crossover types that I've ever driven ... now, as you know, I'm a good bit shorter than 6'4" so your pop might not agree about that comfort thing ... best he actually take a test drive (ride?) in one ... but, again, if mom is gonna be doing a lot of the driving, I'm willing to bet she will agree this is an excellent choice ...

AND, the price is right, given your stated parameters ...
