It still happens. Always will. Maybe a kid saw something about it on Facebook and a seed was planted. If they are only exposed to their uncle saying it is a right of passage or normal without ever hearing the opposing viewpoint on the other hand...

You are really suggesting that not talking about it is better?

Mind blown.

I kind of know you and will assume you are just arguing because it is the internet.

You speak from an authoritative position as if the situation is black and white. Though you may be correct from a perspective among your normal social circles, I would argue from a universal perspective, your claim would be far from accurate.

So wait....you actually believe that there's a large segment of society who needed this example on how NOT to treat animals to keep from doing it themselves????

YES!!!

Though you may not want to believe it, we our selves are animals. When there is conflict and other animals are fighting, I believe it to be instinctual to want to observe said conflict.

In other words, we like to watch fights.

Further, I don't believe this is just a human characteristic, I believe any animal who evolved to have scavenger tendencies (basically any carnivore or omnivore) would have interest in watching fights.

For anecdotal evidence, when my pup dog was younger, he would sit there and watch MMA fights with me (or stand directly in front of the tv in his case). It was basically the only thing my dog would watch with me except for this one time I was watching nat geo and some lions were attacking an elephant, he was enthralled by that.

Quite ironic really, a dog who enjoys watching human fights, who would have thunk?

I know my argument requires a belief in evolution so I'm probably going to have to defend my position later on down the thread, but that's ok... I type fast.

I've decided that I don't care if Vick gets in to the VT Sports Hall of Fame

What we experience is our normal.

It's easy to condemn people with a different life experience.

This is correct but at what point do morals become relevant and what morals are correct?

When the law is developed and enforced. Not retroactively based on who did it. And after someone does their time caution is prudent judgement not so much.

This in my mind is the equivalent to saying that because it was fairly routine to see thugs chase down and kick the sh*t out of those kids who couldn't possibly defend themselves against an attack growing up....that I would " naturally " think this behavior was acceptable and should engage in it myself!!

I'm not that extreme. But I do notice farm kids usually had a different attitude towards their animals who were typically outside and served a purpose, particularly dogs and cats, than the city or suburb kids who had indoor dogs or cats who served no real purpose other than companionship. None of the ones I knew went all Vick on them but there was a very different attitude based on their experiences. And the mamba pamby city folk were mortified by how the country folk treated their dogs and cats. And that's why I don't like the color yellow.... boo effin hoo

I worked at a greyhound park as a vet assistant. Y'all would be mortified how many of those dogs were commonly treated by trainers including putting them down for lack of performance. Those of you buying in to the adoption thing are a marketers dream. It's a nice front but by far more are killed. Ever see a vet use 5cc of sleep away rather than 10cc because it's marginally cheaper?

What Vick did was wrong, period. No excuses. A judge stated his opinion when convicting him and sentencing him. Fair enough. He served his time and apparently did it right. He then came out and tried to reestablish. You can argue whether he is repentant or not. He paid a big price so I'm sure he wishes he hadn't done it and it isn't worth it. Some are more willing to cautiously forgive than others. I forgive the guy but wouldn't hire him to babysit Louie-dog.
