His social commentary and civil rights activism overshadowed his comedic talents, and did not endear him to mainstream culture...but he made a mark...opening a path for black comedians to perform and use humor to make social commentary...

is this the new...2?

as possibly the last poster on this thread, I'd like to close by saying I remember Gregory when he was very funny...I also remember when he decided humor was not important to him anymore.
He never became a household name in the civil rights industry, a quotable champion, nor an opportunist getting wealthy fronting those he desired to help.

I'm not sure what he may have accomplished toward his goals, he did not reach fame for his serious work.

I also seem to recall something like a hunger strike? Pretty sure he lost maybe too much weight. He also pushed for healthier lifestyles including disdaining tobacco and alcohol among other things that I covet...but he may have been more like a genius than me on those subjects.

An interesting life, now I feel like researching a bit so I don't have to rely on my deteriorating memory.

RIP
