A historic Memphis, Tennessee, theater, which has shown "Gone With the Wind" screenings for 34 years, has decided to remove the classic film from its schedule due to its racially "insensitive" content.

The move comes after violence erupted at a rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, earlier this month. The president of the Orpheum Theatre said the decision to remove the 1939 film was not directly related to the recent headlines.

"The Orpheum appreciates feedback on its programming from all members of the mid-south community," Orpheum president Bret Batterson said in a statement to Vulture. "As an organization whose stated mission is to 'entertain, educate and enlighten the communities it serves,' the Orpheum cannot show a film that is insensitive to a large segment of its local population.
His statement continued, "This is something that's been questioned every year, but the social media storm this year really brought it home.

Batterson also noted the popularity of the film has "leveled off" in recent years.

Movie-goers took to the Orpheum's Facebook page to blast the theater's decision.

"This is the stupidest thing I have heard lately and believe me there have been some really stupid things done lately in the name of 'racism' - How ignorant are you people - Never will I go to this theater or any other one that promotes this BS," one person wrote.

Another wrote, "So now we r censoring art...come on it's just a movie if u don't like it don't watch it."

Many people called for a boycott on the theater's Facebook page.

"Gone With The Wind" won eight Academy Awards including Best Picture. Hattie McDaniel, who played "Mammy" was the first African-American actress to win an Academy Award.

Cops around the country are saying the key is to keep the groups separated. Maybe if the theater has blacks sit in the balcony ...they could resume showings

They should not be allowed to make up their own mind or ever change programming! Since the movie will not be shown there a classic is gone! The government should force them to continue playing it.

Drafter do you actively look for this stuff and is there ever a time you'd run accross racism towards a minority and point it out as wrong?

While it may seem obvious that the theater was lashing out at conservative white southerners with a love of antebellum, the real truth is the showings were cancelled to minimize the effects of global warming and spare the lives of countless bald eagles.

Which is surprising since the theater is owned by Mexicans….

If so, they also need to ensure there are copious amounts of doobie to go around.

How are you guys holding up Scott? Hopefully, you're high and dry.

Thank you for asking Anthony, we are as you write, high and dry - The Dallas area is far from harm. Our family memebers down in Jamaca Beach (Galveston area) are soldering thru. Their home is on stilts and the generator is up and running. Nothing like being prepared.....

I went to a baseball game in San Diego a few weeks ago...sat in some good box seats between home plate and first base...not cheap seats by any stretch...couldn't believe the number of people who either stayed seated, left their hats on, kept their arms down at their sides or otherwise acted disrespectfully during the playing of the national anthem...mostly white people in the section we were in...

Azz Holes come in all colors, denominations and political flavors. Universal public service, including some time maintaining one of the many National Cemeteries would go a long way to reduce their reluctance to stand.

Other than drunk a-holes, I have never seen that in all my years attending sporting events.

A ballgame isn't church. People are free to do what they want. But sitting seems to be an attempt at a statement in today's world. Shame on those people.
And I don't know why their color was important to mention. Oh, wait. It was a Delta post...

tail........race is a "theme" of this thread...and if one reads all the content of the posts in the politics section about the issue of race in America, there are sub-themes that blacks are more racist than whites, blacks are more disrespectful, especially when they speak up in public (see Colin K threads) or when they interact with law enforcement...

...and yet, there is outrage, presumably from white movie-goers (I doubt if blacks would insist that the movie continues to be shown) about the decision to stop screenings of a movie that portrays a by-gone era of American history where members of the white race legally owned and oppressed dark-skinned human beings...seems that some whites miss those days, or like to see those images...

I'm just trying to be more fair and balanced by pointing out that there is disrespect in ALL people, whether one chooses to see or not...

Very possible AL that your stadium example has nothing to do with race other than from your prospective.

It is very possible that the whites that you mention are nothing more than left coast liberals that really don't give two chits about the flag and what it stands for or they were to exhausted from their Antifa activities this past week to show their proper respect.

Were they dressed in black and have their faces hidden to keep from being identified?
