The most eye-popping figure in the latest Fox News poll is that 56 percent of those surveyed say President Trump is tearing the country apart.

Another 33 percent say he is drawing the country together.

Not surprisingly, there’s a dramatic partisan split in those numbers: Some 68 percent of Republicans say the president is drawing the country together, while 93 percent of Democrats (and 59 percent of independents) say he is tearing the country apart.

But I want to pose a deeper question: Is this entirely Trump’s fault, or is it also…ours?

Let’s look at recent history. Barack Obama campaigned on changing the tone in Washington, and many supporters thought his election would usher in a new era of racial healing. He failed on both counts.

George W. Bush explicitly ran as “a uniter, not a divider.” But after Iraq and Katrina, he was viewed as a very divisive president.

Bill Clinton promoted the notion of “third way” policies that rejected “the brain-dead politics of both parties.” He wound up getting impeached on a largely party-line vote.

So if four straight presidents have found themselves at the center of a hyperpartisan divide, maybe it’s not entirely their fault.

Both parties, aided by gerrymandered districts, have moved further to the right and left, shrinking the number of moderates in Congress.

The media have become increasingly partisan, as some outlets largely or completely cater to those who agree with their politics.

Social media have become more polarized as well, as millions of people engage in shouting matches or unfriend each other.

And the rise of independent advocacy groups, liberated by the Supreme Court, is fueled by a fundraising machine that often demonizes the other side.

Now a case can be made that Trump, especially in recent weeks, has played to his base, the 36 to 40 percent that seem to support him no matter what. He has pushed a transgender ban for the military, ended Obama-era equal pay monitoring, threatened a government shutdown over his border wall, pardoned ex-sheriff Joe Arpaio, and is considering ending the Dreamers program after a six-month delay.

Then again, it’s no accident that Obama embraced gay marriage and said he would stop deporting the dreamers--younger illegal immigrants brought here by their parents—when he was running for reelection in 2012.

It’s easy for Trump’s detractors to work themselves into a frenzy over the notion that he is a uniquely polarizing president. But this has been going on in one form or another for two decades.

Why did Trump get elected in the first place?

Obama's 2 terms:

1. U.S. sovereign debt downgrade: first in American history (from AAA to AA)
2. Federal spending (25% of GDP): highest since WWII
3. Budget deficit (10% of GDP): highest since WWII
4. Federal debt (67% of GDP): highest since just after WWII
5. Employment (58.1% of population working: lowest since 1983
6. Long-term unemployment (45.9% of total: highest since 1930s)
7. Home ownership rate (59.7%): lowest since 1965
8. Percentage of taxpayers paying income tax (49%): lowest in modern era
9. Government dependency (47%), defined as the percentage of persons receiving one or more federal benefit payments: highest in American history
10. Median income down $3700 during Obama administration.

(Sources: Standard and Poor's, Office of Management & Budget, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Morgan Stanley, Joint Committee on Taxation, and the U.S. Census).

I blame the democrats and their usual suspects (KKK, neo-nazis, antifa,BLM, CNN) for the current state of divisiveness in this country. They're all in lock-step paid for by globalist interests who want to usurp the sovereignity of the US and relegate it to third world status.

Be careful what you ask for! A united parliament of whores (Congress) would pass more oppressive legislation, increase the size of government and increase our already oppressive tax burden.

I'd have to see the divider first...especially how she's divided...there were some protest sayings a long time ago...something like "make love, not war", "give peace a chance","war is not the answer"...

I could give the same reaction to just about everything the left screams about Trump.

Ended DACA = the sky is falling
Wants to build a wall = the sky is falling
Gonna cut taxes = the sky is falling

Lets give him 2 terms and see if he can fix everything Obammy effed up.

I don't think Trump wants another term...he may not finish this one...he's alienated the people he needed the most, his majority in Congress. He's so desperate that he's begun reaching out to the Dems...

I'm in complete agreement. I have come to the conclusion that there is much little difference between a D and an R than we have been led to believe. I sort of view Trump as a third party candidate.

In a lot of folks minds trump becomes what they want, long for, or think is missing when in reality he's not what they think or want.

It's funny that even amongst his supporters they think he is this or that and often it is conflicting or inconsistent with what other supporters think he is. He's like a cloud. I see a duck, you see a train but in reality he's a cloud.

While I think he is a charlaton and con man I can't deny he's a marketer with an eye for human nature and he plays on those things.

In the end we spend a lot of time trying to figure out something simple. I don't think there is much of substance there. His mind and soul is like kaiser Sosa and Tyler durdon crossed with pt Barnum, Rippley, and Bernie Madoff with a dash of kardashian and Snooki.

I also think he's smart enough to remain nebulous because if the haze like curtains get lifted it would be real clear he's got nothing and just a bumbling old fool.

I'm not complaining, just pointing out Trump's situation, and maybe doing a little under the table tiny hand clapping that the GOP is squandering a once in a lifetime majority in both houses of Congress, the WH and in the SCOTUS...if they had been able to work together, they could've enacted legislation that would've put this country firmly on conservative tracks for years to come...and without any help from the Dems...they still have time, but the window is closing...

...if he works with Chuck and Nancy the rest of his term, I'd be happy...

...but the most conservative members of his base, the Tea Party, will be very, very, very, very unhappy...and most conservatives will be very unhappy... I guess we'll see if the conservatives were truthful when some of them said that politics has gotten too divisive and that we need to work together, R's with D's for the good of the country...judging from the looks on Paul's and Mitch's faces after that meeting...they don't agree...

The problem is Al....it's always the R's having to move further to the LEFT in order to " work with the Dems " and IMHO that is not a good thing.

Compromise is noble. Reagan thought so if you are really interested in what he did and how he acted instead of the revisionist garbage.

"A fire broke out backstage in a theatre. The clown came out to warn the public; they thought it was a joke and applauded. He repeated it; the acclaim was even greater. I think that's just how the world will come to an end: to general applause from wits who believe it's a joke."

It depends on the compromise ..and then there has to be a common language where both sides understand exactly what each other is saying...

...no more saying "this plan will provide better and cheaper health care for everybody" ...

...but meaning "we're gonna give the wealthiest people (our real base) more money by taking it away from the ACA subsidy plan that actually provides the middle class and poor people (some of them are our pretend base) with decent healthcare insurance"
