Look... I know most of you will immediately disagree with me, simply because I post something.

But the more this story develops, the more disturbing I find it.

Some random US citizen tweets on their private twitter that trump is a white supremacist. ....

I don't see much of a problem with that. But suddenly the White House Press Secretary, DURING AN OFFICIAL PRESS EVENT states she believes Hill should be fired.
Then, following it up, the President of the United States tweets attacks against her employer? Stating their programming is bad and they need to apologize for some "untruth"? (for the record, ESPN did not state he's a white supremacist, and to follow up, to claim that's an untruth is something that is still in debate).

So seriously.

If I call Trump a white supremacist on Facebook or Twitter? Do you guys think it's appropriate for the President AND the Press Secretary to use official channels to pressure my employer to fire me?

When you guys called Obama a racist on Cbid forums (a completely public social media forum) would you have thought it was appropriate for Obama to attack your employer on twitter and call for your firing?

This is some seriously messed up sh#t guys. We're talking about the white house directly using its power to try to suppress private citizens from expressing their opinion of the white house.

Check with Curt Schilling, sure he has an opinion for you.

Probably will not have anything to do with double standards though.

Not hard to find. The tweets are still up (Jamele Hill)
"Donald Trump is a white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself w/ other white supremacists.
4:54 PM - Sep 11, 2017"
"The height of white privilege is being able to ✌🏾ignore✌🏾his white supremacy, because it's of no threat to you. Well, it's a threat to me.
4:55 PM - Sep 11, 2017"
"Trump is the most ignorant, offensive president of my lifetime. His rise is a direct result of white supremacy. Period.
4:58 PM - Sep 11, 2017"
Note - these are all from her private twitter account. the same as you or I stating something on facebook or twitter or Cbid.

Then on Wed, Huckabee was asked about Hill's tweets. Her response was: "’m not sure he’s aware but I think that’s one of the more outrageous comments that anyone could make and certainly something that I think is a fireable offense by ESPN."
(note. this is during an official press conference in which Huckabee is representing the white house).

http://www.salon.com/2017/09/13/sarah-huckabee-sanders-suggests-espn-should-have-fired-jamele-hill-for-criticizing-trump/

Then this morning we get the orange moron weighing in:
http://www.salon.com/2017/09/15/donald-trump-attacks-espn-and-jemele-hill-in-morning-tweet/
"ESPN is paying a really big price for its politics (and bad programming). People are dumping it in RECORD numbers. Apologize for untruth!"

Note. President just stated that a private company has bad programming. In response to an employee of that private company having a negative opinion of the president and expressing it through their own personal twitter feed.

Not to mention the questionable accuracy of "people are dumping it in record numbers"... which I really doubt he checked before tweeting.

None of this is hard to find.

This is interesting, and with the disclaimer i don't usually get involved in these types of questions, i will answer for the sake of a hopefully intellectual discussion.

the private posting on a public forum, makes it public posting IMO. that posting received a public response from someone who has enough influence to have their answer repeated by media forums. a white house press secretary can do that. with this i do not see a problem. If i am correct from reading your description, Huckabee was asked and answered. it seems like its an IMO response to an IMO twitter post. Whether one comment carries more weight then the other is debatable, because perceived thought in both instance (atleast for me) are that both individuals are a part of larger pictures like the POTUS staff and ESPN. since both involved are public figures known and affiliated with their respected fields, im sure they have morality/public image standards they are required to uphold per their employers.

the first amendment covers free speech, but libel/slander is not covered, and being a journalist/host/reporter saying things like ""Donald Trump is a white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself w/ other white supremacists." thats now in print, and while opinion may support that, facts currently cannot. this opens ESPN to issues with quite possibly the most litigious POTUS in us history.

If I call Trump a white supremacist on Facebook or Twitter? Do you guys think it's appropriate for the President AND the Press Secretary to use official channels to pressure my employer to fire me?

IMO - if you were in that position, and made those comments, i can see the comments that were made be fired right back.
"’m not sure he’s aware but I think that’s one of the more outrageous comments that anyone could make and certainly something that I think is a fireable offense by ESPN."
is it an outrageous comment, yeah its out there. without any concrete facts that can be cited. could comments like that be cited in a company firing someone? sure. you're a liability.

When you guys called Obama a racist on Cbid forums (a completely public social media forum) would you have thought it was appropriate for Obama to attack your employer on twitter and call for your firing?

IMO- do i think its appropriate for a POTUS to attack a company on twitter, no i think its juvenile, but that what trump has been doing for years, and hes good at it. also he attacked ESPN programming, not individuals, and he may be an yahoo or SI fan. i do however see to fail where the while house is asking for a firing. saying one can be fired for that and saying fire them for that is different.

This is some seriously messed up sh#t guys. We're talking about the white house directly using its power to try to suppress private citizens from expressing their opinion of the white house
.

IMO - while he may not be very popular he still is the president. he has some ability to get face time and media time. if you make public comments on a public forum, they can be seen, passed and replied to. you still have to legally answer and be held responsible for your actions. you cant cry for free speech on one side and then cry that free speech caused you to get fired because no one wanted to deal with putting out fires.

ESPN fired Curt Schilling for saying (or retweeting) something about transgenders using the bathroom that matches their birth gender (or something like that).

What Hill did is pretty much slander the president and his cabinet by calling them white supremacists.

Had anyone at ESPN called Obama a racist, is there any doubt they'd have been fired immediately?

Trump is the President of the US, so he is the most recognizable public figure on the planet. Public figures are basically easy targets for written and verbal attacks. Just about impossible for him to prevail in a libel/slander suit against Hill.

As for Hill, she made those comments in her personal social media accounts, so that may be a protection against any fall-out from her employer, if they were inclined. Depends on the terms of her employment contract and whether it includes limits on personal conduct/decorum. I think ESPN will take an air-test to see which way the wind is blowing or if there is any fall-out before taking action or not.

It's been pointed out that Trump did the exact same thing to Obama when he was on tv. I don't believe anyone called for his firing.

His tweet, in 2012 literally stated "Obama's '07 speech which @DailyCaller just released not only shows that Obama is a racist but also how the press always covers for him.
12:44 PM - Oct 3, 2012"

At the time he was the main person on "the apprentice". Barak Obama did not demand an apology from ABC or claim the show was losing viewers or do anything to damage either the show or the network. Can you imagine what a fit you would have if he had?

Schilling was fired after being warned 3 times, he knew what was coming and made the decision.

Hill gets 2 more shots if anyone is looking for equal treatment.

Personally, I feel sorry for anyone being influenced by the political posturing of a good pitcher who is a major league hypocrite when it comes to his conservative leanings, as well as anyone influenced by a sports show host who comments on sports things.

Schilling was also fired by the company at the company's discretion.
Neither the president nor the press secretary for the white house suggested that he be fired or created any bad press for his employer due to his comments. Private industry (ESPN) can have a bias if they want. We see that from companies in both directions.

I want to make it clear. The president of the United States stated that ESPN had bad programming in response to something their employee said under their name (Not in an article or ESPN related post). That is punishing an employer for private social network posts of their employees ultimately to pressure a private company to punish their employees for views.

What do any of you think you would have said if obama started tweeting about ABC being a failing network and demanding they apologize for their untruths when Trump tweeted about Obama being a racist?

I'm sure you guys would have been totally fine with it? Right?

OK, you're correct. The question raised is about the Prez, not the particulars about which he commented...I think it is as idiotic as we have seen on a daily basis.

Are we becoming inured to his antics?
Is calling them "antics" proving it's too late to save me?

this has absolutely nothing to do with the position pro or con of the media.

I support the electoral college, in my mind he absolutely won and is the legit POTUS, but if you ask who the country voted for, we did not, he got soundly beaten.

his antics are not new. he owns his behavior. it is not a media creation. decades of antics in the books.

Vic is bringing up something specific that he has done, not opinions on the opinions expressed in social media. We all know what the opinions of the opinions would be here.

Some of it. He's a boor. I get it.

350+ million and he won the electoral. Lost the popular by what? 3 million or so? So less than 1%? I wouldn't say that was soundly defeated. Given that only half the country voted... I'll give you 2%.

Point is... Obama won big. Many who voted for him wanted the 'change' he promised. Careful what you wish for.

If his term gives us anything, it's likely to get more people voting, for good or bad...

His behavior is that of a tyrant /bully. It is unacceptable behavior for a president of the United States. The behavior he exhibits has nothing, repeat, nothing to do with what Obama did or did not do. Take Curt Schilling out of the conversation too. This is about the president, no one else.

When people call someone a nazi or white supremacist simply because they do not like them, they too lose credibility.

Sessions was not confirmed by Congress when he was nominated to the federal appellate courts in 1986 because there was evidence of his bias against blacks/minorities. He was quoted as saying he would've joined the KKK if a couple of those guys hadn't smoked marijuana...

Something none of you seem to be willing to address is that this question has NOTHING to do with whether you think she should be fired. This is about whether you think the president of the United States should be using his power to pressure private companies when their employees criticize him.

Yes it does. I specifically stated "pressure private companies". Using the platform of the presidency to state that their programming is bad and to state in an unsubstantiated manner that people are "dumping it in record numbers" is what is called pressuring a private company.
