Hypersensitivity: It’s made it’s way into kids

I teach U.S. History to 14 year old kids for a living. I have to share what happened yesterday because it’s the first time I’ve seen it and given the current political/social climate, something tells me it won’t be the last.

Our current unit is over the Am. Revolution and the Declaration of Independence. I asked my students to write from the perspective of a founding father in regards to the grievances against the King listed in the Declaration of Independence...

I had an African American female student request not to do the assignment because it was “offensive”. I asked her to explain why she felt that way and she told me that our founding fathers had white privelege and since they supported slavery it was offensive to her to take their perspective.

I won’t waste your time on explaining the historical inaccuracies of her over-generalized claim, but I couldn’t believe that a 14 year old would make this statement. It wouldn’t have happened 2 years ago... maybe I should be grateful she’s at least keeping up with current events? Now I’m just waiting for the parent email accusing me of being a white supremist.Brick wall

thank you for sharing....lotta awesome right there....I'm sure there's 'teachable moment' opportunity in there somewhere, but I'm not mature enough to have that engagement without laughing my ass off ...good luck in your new profession, whatever that may be

Why do you hate black people?

But in all seriousness, this is a tough one because she's just a kid.

If I were the teacher I would ask the school principal how to handle the situation- thereby insulating myself from any reprocusion...

Sure as the sky is blue, as soon as you sent her to the office, You would be getting a call from a parent wanting to know why you the white supremacist is also punishing her child. This is why I could not teach. My next question is this. Was this for a grade? If she does not have to do it does she get a 0 for the assignment much less a poor mark for participation. Does this also go for the rest of the class? I think that would have been my response. "Sure you don't have to do it but it will count as a 0 in the grade book! As a matter of fact you can refuse to do any assignment and get a 0 for each. The choice IS yours."

taking another's perspective is a good way to learn.
even if the conclusion is that you were right all along...but sometimes you find you are not.
that's worth a lot.

The irony of it all is that the lesson itself was to look through the eyes of those standing up to oppression.

With a little history lesson, she could also find that at that time pretty much every nation every where supported slavery.

People have probably been enslaving people since before people were uh... people.

You should have a black guest speaker come and teach about the yaruba and igbo of Nigeria and how one of the first places Christianity spread to was Africa. Most black Americans know that they have African roots but I think the younger generations would have more respect if they had a strong African male who respects America because it practically has given them more wealth in one year than what they could aquire back home.

Me personally, if I were a black man, I would strive to be like Frederick Douglass. That was a man of Character and class. He was the embodiment of the all-American self made man.
