Trying to get a generator for/to a friend in Puerto Rico

We have a friend in Puerto Rico still without power and it looks like it’s going to be a long time before they do. She needs a generator. She can’t find one on the island and I’d suspect (she’s too proud to say) she couldn’t afford one if she could find one due to her job basically being wiped out by the storm as well as some health issues.

I think all she needs is something small to run her refrigerator/freezer and a few lights. Maybe a microwave too. With the cost of gas there, and the fact a generator sound might bring thieves I keep going back to thinking about a little Honda 2000. But that’s irrelevant because I can’t find a good way to get her any generator which at this point is what I would do. So while there is a preference (from me...maybe) in the end I just want to get something to her.

I got a local Home Depot guy to check stock all over the island (anything but specifically a Briggs 6500 and would have bought it then and there for her to pick up). Surprise. None. Ship to store not an answer. Amazon seemed to have some options until you try to ship. Crazy shipping costs (if at all) and crazier time frames.

I did find the Honda on sale here for $900 plus tax (expensive for a 2000 but it’s less than 50 lbs, quiet, and efficient). I think I can get it shipped there UPS for $300 (yikes) but I still am dubious about the time. That would put me prolly $1300 in and crossing my fingers about if/when the little guy got there. Frankly it’s prolly pushing my limits on cost as well.

I’d much prefer to go cheaper or maybe more bang for the buck. Although I’m sure the Honda is great. Ideally if I could find something on the island and buy it for her that would be best, but good luck with that.

I’m tired of thinking about it and about to give up. Plus my thought are all over the place. But I really want to help her.

Sometimes y’all have good ideas. Maybe I’m not thinking outside the box enough. Any thoughts on how to get this done reasonably. It might just be what it is.

Harbor Freight has some nice smaller units cheap, not as quiet as the Honda but a fraction of the costBeer

For a harbor freight 2000 comparable to the Honda it’s $500 plus tax rather than $900. That’s in the right direction if it can handle daily use for awhile. I have a love hate relationship with harbor freight but didn’t think about that. Thx.

Actually $430 with coupon. Still have shipping issue but an idea. Hurts me that shipping would be 300ish on it lol.

Looking at USPS. I think I can get one the size of the Honda/harbor freight there by Friday or Monday (if you beleive them) for $$130 ish.

That makes the harbor freight one very doable. I don’t know much about generators and like I said I have a love hate relationship with harbor freight. My general rule of thumb with HF is moveable parts stay away, no movable parts right on.

In this case there will be no warranty/return due to circumstances. Is the HF up to the task and worth the risk or are there other options?

HF has one that I'm looking to power up my trailer. it's 8700max 7000 running watts...13 HP...for 529.99.

Comparable to the Honda $2,700.00

My primary utility generator (just an 800w unit) is a HF-esque brand.

It probably doesn't quite meet the specs on the box. But it's very quiet, runs 8 hours on a tank (like a half gallon) and runs my camper including residential fridge. I've probably only run it 80 hours but no major issues.

I'd buy a Predator inverter generator, or a Champion 3100 when I upgrade.

I had a Honda 2000. It was wonderful. It grew legs and wandered off.

Do you trust it dmv? Shipping would rule that out for me. The 2000s are less than 50 lbs.

I’ll prolly just do the hf but if it doesn’t wok out of the box or conks out soon there is really no recourse.

Need inverter generator unless you don't care about 120dB drone.

Dan the hf is a predator. 2000 is 430. Maybe the way to go. Quiet enough, efficient. Good enough for refrigerator lights and maybe microwave. I think I can get it there under $600.

In the end I’m applying my standards not theirs. They are desperate.

I was planning on building a quiet box for anything I buy. Already have an inverter and this one has 220 GFCI Outlets too!

I'm kinda in the same boat as you regarding them. Just spent 100 on a Hercules drill and am DAMN impressed with it. Bought a radial saw with a laser guide for 25 bucks...Chicago brand.,..impressed with it too. Talked to a few people about it and they say they have had no issue with theirs. Keep the oil changed and full and runs like a champ.

As for the noise...even the "quiet" ones make noise. Was going to build a box something like this...

Yea... she may have to figure that out there. I can only do so much. Leaning HF but would hate for it to get there, be worthless etc. I don’t have that fear with the Honda. They have dealers/parts etc. but the cost....

My gut says the same about Harbor Freight.... thus the if it has movable parts stay away if not then ok.... my wallet says otherwise but I don't want to be a dollar wise pound the foolish mofo.... I was hoping some in here would have great luck with HF generators and convince me....


still thinking.... will look into kohler and gererac but want to mail tomorrow and can have the honda or HF in hand this evening.

If you'd have gotten known quality stuff elsewhere...some of the chit would have been more expensive....overall, though? You'd have probably been WAY ahead in money's worth and less painful experiences.

I've never been to HF, but I'm clearly convinced that there's no reason that should change

T-dub...just remember...there is total CHAOS were you are shipping this item... Thievery & bribery ARE RULING THE DAY AND ALL COMMERCE delivery...if you ship it buy USPS? my guess is 50-50? That they will get it...
If you home depot "store to store" ship it? My guess is that

Yeah, but they don't have any in stock to replace it with if it breaks.

Not sure about the availability of Ryobi engine parts, as they are owned by Home Depot and pretty much exclusive to to them.

Got the ryobi. No Honda’s or parts on the island right now either. 6 one way half dozen another. They can’t replace it but could return it. The Honda would have been best but I’m not made of money .... and....

I have several hundred bucks worth of other things gathered to send as well. Things like batteries and first aid stuff.

No ship to store means no ship to store. What makes anyone think I’d pay $120 or $130 to ship if that was available. It’s not.

They have a P.O. box. USPS seems safest at this point. I’ll wrap it in brown paper and write on the outside bio hazard Victors hep c pee.
