As older men many of us will get to the point of having an elevated reading on a PSA test. I finally got to that point and made my first visit to the urologist this week. He has put me on a couple of meds for a couple of months and then will do another PSA see how I’m responding. If doing well will continue meds, if not then biopsy is in order.

What I really wanted to pass on was info I had never seen or heard concerning an enlarged prostate. While going over family history and life style habits the doc mentioned four things that can contribute to an enlarged prostate.

Spicy food – check

Caffeine – check, I did advise that in the past year I had gone from 8-10 cups a day down to 5. No more than 1 or 2 was his reply.

Alcohol – check

Number 4 – I forgot, already batting .750 and this one did not apply.

Thought I would do my good deed for the day and pass on the 3 items I did remember. Maybe this will help some of you FOG's that maybe teetering on an elevated reading.

Good PSA tests here though I always have two or three cups of coffee daily and enjoy spicy food.

I do wonder exactly what they mean by spicy food, I use Tony Chachere, Slap Your Momma, ground Cayenne or similar and hotter red pepper spice on just about everything. My wife always make soup or chili with jalapeño or Serrano peppers.

OTOH, some people call food with salt and pepper 'spicy' go figure.

Dan,
Thank you for the information. More importantly, I hope this is nothing serious and can be resolved with changes in diet.

I read about studies that say more sex leads to a healthy prostate (not recently... so not sure what's out there now) . So rub one out twice a day, and that thing should shrink in a hurry.

Dan, I hope it's nothing. My Doc says most elevated PSA readings are nothing to worry about but best to monitor and catch early.

I guess since we both like coffee stouts with a little chili kick we are living dangerously Beer

Afraid I will have to push away from more than coffee stouts with chili. I am optimist that it can/will be controlled with diet and meds.

Below is site a BOTL forwarded that appears to have valuable info concerning the diet aspect.

https://prostate.net/articles/10-ways-to-lower-your-psa

Did mention bgz's idea of more sex to the wife last night and I think she is still laughing this morning.

Hoping for you it will be controlled with diet more than meds. Me personally, I hate popping pill- and forget about injections too.

My PSA number is always so low my Dr. has a difficult time thinking the test was correct. A few years ago they tested it 3 times, all were within .01 of each other. So they called it good and the number has been the same ever since.

I eat spicy foods, drink alcohol, not so much caffeine though, couple cups of tea each day is all.

Number 4 - Just remembered thanks to today's visit - Carbonated drinks.

Returned to the doc today and most current PSA results were well within limits. Appears that the antibiotics did the trick for now. Will now be on the 6 month rotation to keep an eye on the situation.

Amazing, as we get older the visits become more frequent.

Would also suggest cutting back on processed sugar.
And yes, more sex has proven to help with a healthy prostate.

Best to you Burner. Keep it up!

I don't currently have an enlarged prostate, so I don't... does sound like a lot of work though.

Specifically asked the doc about pomegranate yesterday and he indicated there is no direct benefit to or for the prostate from pomegranate. Did acknowledged it is great as an antitoxin.

The only supplement he recommended for one to take is saw palmetto.

If your prostate is affected by sex then you're doing it wrong.

The Pomegranate jury is still out but encouraging https://www.harvardprostateknowledge.org/pomegranate-juice-may-slow-prostate-cancer-progression

Saw Palmetto works to reduce enlarged prostate however if your issue is cancer there is some question whether enhanced testosterone associated with saw palmetto uptake can increase rate of cancer growth.

I had some prostate problems in my 20's but since then nothing. My PSA usually runs around 2 or so, Lots of coffee, more than enough booze, but no problems. Reminds me that I need to make an appointment with the urologist, tho.
