Trump suggests that Sen. John McCain's vote was the only impediment to passing a repeal and replacement of the Affordable Care Act. But none of the substantive replacement bills got nearly enough votes, and McCain's vote was against a "skinny" repeal that was only to lead to talks with the House on a common position, with no guarantee of an agreement that would pass both Houses.

Trump is making a major economic error in comparing the GDP of a developed country to a developing one. By a process of elimination, it is possible the prime minister of India is the world leader who is unhappy with 7 percent growth rate. (He’s probably even unhappier now that growth appears to be slowing.) Certainly, Trump has expressed interest in rivaling India’s growth. That’s one world leader. But the world leader who Trump claims is unhappy with 8 percent growth appears to be a phantom. Of the 58 heads of state he’s met or spoke with since taking office, not one can claim 9 percent GDP growth.

Trump keeps taking credit for projects that were long in the works before he became president. For example, he repeatedly claims credit for Ford’s decision to abandon its plans to open a factory in Mexico and instead expand its Michigan plant. But analysts say Ford’s decision has more to do with the company’s long-term goal — particularly, its plans to invest in electric vehicles — than the administration.

Most drugs come into the United States across the southern border with Mexico. But a wall would not limit this illegal trade, as much of it travels through legal borders or under tunnels unaffected by any possible physical barrier. Even if the wall could curb illicit drug trafficking, it would have a minimal impact on the death toll from drug abuse. Prescription drug overdoses claim more lives than cocaine and heroin overdoses combined.

Low-skilled immigration increased sharply after 1970, but leveled off by the mid-2000s. So he is using outdated data. Overall, there is no evidence that immigration depresses wages or employment of natives, according to a comprehensive study by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. Low-skilled immigration did have small — not “substantial” — effects on wages of certain subgroups of native workers, including low-skilled African American workers and some low-skilled Hispanic workers. In the long-term, low- and high-skilled immigration is a net positive to the economy.

The president repeats a myth that has long been debunked by historians. There is no evidence that Gen. John J. Pershing -- the only American general to receive six stars during his lifetime -- committed the war crime of shooting 50 Muslim terrorists after dipping the bullets in pig's blood. In fact, Pershing de-escalated the conflict because he found that escalating counterterrorism was ineffective during the Philippines insurgency in 1899-1913.

There’s no evidence that "sanctuary" policies had anything to do with crime trends in Miami-Dade County. Mayor Carlos Gimenez said the county can't attribute its drop in crimes just to its reversal of its sanctuary policy. Instead, Gimenez pointed to various efforts the county took to decrease its crime rate using new tactics and neighborhood-based crime prevention, such as creating job-training programs for high-crime areas.

Trump’s claim reflects a misunderstanding of black communities and is incongruous with his budget proposals. “Inner cities” is not synonymous with black communities, so he gets a basic fact wrong about where black Americans are concentrated in this country. Moreover, Trump proposed steep reductions to a variety of programs that disproportionately affect minority communities and lower-income Americans, from education to housing. There is a $225 billion backlog to fix America’s inner cities, yet Trump’s budget does not reflect a genuine prioritization of projects to reduce this backlog.
