Trump attacked Merck because its chief executive quit one of his CEO panels after the president's remarks on Charlottesville. But Merck actually has a relatively good record on drug prices. It is one of only a handful of big pharmaceutical companies to disclose the amount Merck actually receives for a drug after factoring in rebates and other discounts that drugmakers pay out.

Trump indeed gave an order to launch a nuclear posture review, but that is standard procedure for a new administration. (It was not his first order, but came seven days after he took office.) But he’s kidding himself — or misleading Americans — that much has changed in the nuclear arsenal since he took office in January. President Barack Obama actually launched a modernization effort expected to cost as much as $1 trillion, and Trump so far has not deviated from that path. Given the expense, the long manufacturing times and the need for annual congressional appropriations, the timeline for nuclear modernization is decades, not days.

Russia is demanding the removal of 755 people from the U.S. embassy staff of 1,200, most of which will be local employees. Any American diplomats will simply take up posts at the State Department. The reduction of staffing will be costly for U.S. diplomacy, as it will limit influence, reduce reporting and add an additional burden on remaining diplomats. The Fact Checker estimated the maximum savings would be $28 million, enough to fund just 23 soldiers in Afghanistan. Trump aides later claimed he was joking.

Fusion GPS, a research firm started by ex-journalists, had two clients with starkly different goals. One client, originally a Republican, wanted dirt on Donald Trump’s business deals, especially in Russia, which would be potentially damaging to Russia’s interests because U.S. intelligence agencies concluded Russia wanted to give Trump an edge in the election. Another client, a Russian bank, wanted help in defending a lawsuit — and Fusion’s research ended up aligning with Russia’s efforts to reverse U.S. sanctions. There were Russian entities involved, but there is currently no evidence that the Russian government paid for Fusion’s work on the Prevezon defense at the same time Fusion investigated Trump’s business dealings in Russia.

Trump suggests the State Department under Hillary Clinton had sole approval authority on a uranium rights deal with a company largely owned by Russia’s nuclear energy agency. But the State Department is one of nine agencies in the Committee on Foreign Investments in the United States to vet and sign off on all U.S. transactions involving foreign governments. There is no evidence Clinton herself got involved in the deal personally, and it is highly questionable that this deal even rose to the level of the secretary of state. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission also needed to approve, and did approve, the transfer.
