too lazy to check, but wasn't the penalty for an American possessing a Cuban cigar anywhere in the world extremely harsh?

I don't think anyone was ever given the punishment but I seem to recall the Gov could slap a fine of multiple thousands of dollars and up to 14 yeas in jail...

that ain't jay walking stuff.

But interestingly enough, everyone I talked to never got the penalty... they'd get a letter saying "hey... we took your cigars. Be glad we didn't fine you all this money or anything else".

But tail wants to make sure that's enforced... super enforced. LAW!!!!

Q:
What is the penalty for bringing Cuban cigars into the United States?
A:
Quick Answer
U.S. citizens face penalties in the form of a 10-year prison sentence, $100,000 in corporate fines, $65,000 in civil fines and $25,000 in individual fines for importing Cuban cigars into the United States. Americans are also not allowed to smoke Cuban cigars on foreign lands

YIKES!!!!!! OhMyGod

It's a misdemeanor the first time... If they come back they are felons.. I'd bet way over half of the illegals are felons... How many do we deport everyday..?? Huh

I'd also like to point out that this is incorrect as well. In so far as I believe the discussion was about these Dreamers people, who qualify for DACA. This is not your average illegal immigrant who jumps the border weekly to work. These are US established people. If they were deported they likely wouldn't even have the local knowledge or connections to find their way back into the states.

Jesus. Based on what was referenced earlier in this thread that looks like it makes it a felony.

I didn't realize I spent so much time hanging out with hardened criminals here. Good thing everyone does their time any time they get caught with cubans....

It seems that the Trump administration is now charging first-time illegal immigrants with the crime of illegal entry, and then deporting them after their sentence.. In the past, most illegals were only deported, so past practice had been that it was not treated as a crime if you were caught in the US illegally. Now it is being treated as a crime.

Either change the law or punish them thoroughly. Actually even if you change the law it shouldn't be retroactive and those cuban cigar smokers should get max punishment. You don't want to encourage breaking the law because it might pay off later.

send them all to jail, fine them.... then work on a solution

Of course Trump rolled back some of the travel regs narrowing this gap. I suppose if you can prove you traveled there and have a box you'd be ok....

Has Trump stirred up animus against immigrants, or has he just tapped into a latent but heartfelt belief among some Americans? Until he occupied the WH, it seemed inevitable that there would be a comprehensive immigration reform plan passed. Now, it does not appear likely that it would include humane treatment of families, DACA or pathways to citizenship.

With that said, you're confusing the issue.
People will always bend, twist or break laws. Especially "minor" ones.
But when they are caught, they pay the piper. that's all I'm saying here.
You seem to be arguing that we should ignore illegal entry because Jo-blo bought a cuban. It's a false argument. The two are separate. And each hold a penalty.
I just want it enforced.

I have yet to talk to a person here (or elsewhere) who "paid the piper" regarding cuban purchases. The cigars would disappear... maybe I heard of a $100-200 fine... never heard of a single person getting any of that 10year jail time.

You mistakenly think that our cbid crowd is "paying the piper" on those "minor felonies" we have committed... but are incensed that laws against illegals aren't being sufficiently enforced.

Perhaps I mistakenly assumed that you want laws to be applied evenly. I guess you don't want that.

victor, Leon Lett is infamous in American football for a premature touchdown celebration...he was running towards the goal-line after picking up a fumble, with a certain 6 points in hand during the Super Bowl, when he turned and taunted a pursuing opponent by pointing the ball at him...the opponent, Beebe, knocked the ball out of his hands before Lett scored...

You're prolly thinking of Wayne Gretzky, prolly the greatest hockey player ever...I met him once at the UCLA tennis stadium...we were standing at the front gate, just before they opened to let the fans in...he's a nice guy, but not very big...

I have no issue with being anti illegal immigration. I am too. Send them home. But the conversation has moved to anti-immigration by far to many. Once a fringe thought.

relax the rules and quotas taking all reason for someone to not follow the rules, then go hard at those that don't. Take away all excuses.

While full of awesomeness, the Lett mythical aura only truly reached epic state the following year when Lett lost a game by trying to pick up a blocked kick at the end of a game....he fd around in the snow and allowed the other team to try another kick, which was successful and beat Lett's Cowboys....had he just ignored the ball sitting on the ground, they'd have won......thus the immortal admonishment; "Leon Lett it be!!"

They won the sb, and lost the latter referenced game (on Thanksgiving) only to win the SB again that year. Lett was a bone head but he was a monster.

The conversation has moved to "anti-immigration" only because the left accuse people of that.
Someone says "deport the illegals" and the left cry "you hate Mexicans!".

Same thing happened under Obama.
Someone would criticize the President and the left would retort with "racist!".
