So I am at work, and a guy that I talk to frequently about cigars has two cigars sitting on his desk in a humidified bag. I comment on them and he shows me that they are 2011 Cohiba Behike's. I commented that I didn't even think I would see those in person in my life. He proceeds to give me one. I almost didn't want to take it considering how much he said they cost. He insisted that I take one of them. I am in shock right now.....

Nah, this guy spends serious coin on cigars. Used to own a cigar shop. I trust that it is legit.

If it's not a fake, it'll be a waste on Hamk. Didn't you say before you don't even like Cuban cigars?

I've been fortunate to have smoked a couple OR Behike and they were the best 2 hours of smoke experience I've ever had.

I had heard he had to puff on da boss's Gurkha but when Hank got hurt and got some splinters stuck in in the top of his bald head from under the desk. Well that's when da boss felt bad for him and gave him the fake cuban.

Could be fake news but its not been on Fox or CNN so.....

My first few experiences with CC's weren't great, but I have found some that I really like. I am really excited to try this one.

He just brought them into work that way to smoke yesterday. It had humi pack in it to keep it properly humidified.

He humidifies Behikes with humipacks when he only has them out of his humidor for a day?

Being a former cigar shop owner doesn't make one an expert on Cuban cigars nor any other origin for that matter.

I have found that in most cases, cigar store owners and employees tend to be done of the most misinformed know it alls.

But, you might have found a rare one that has a clue. There are a few out there.

Then you have individuals who are idiotic know it alls, like the guy who told me that the Romeo Juliette Maduro was trash...... spicy? Yes, trash? Definitely not, just not to certain smoke shop owners' taste. I personally found it ok. That was my first cigar I ever smoked, and the darkest cigar I could find here in Oregon.......

"This guy sems to know what he's talking about"

Based on what, Hank?

Does his office have many expensive things and does it smell of rich mahogany and Corinthian leather?

Just based on conversations that I have had with him. If it is fake, I feel bad for the 1750 he paid for each of two boxes he bought back in 2011.

I don't think they went for $1750 back then. I think he overpaid if that's the case.

I think it's more likely he's full of sh17 though (or you being full of sh17 is equally likely).

I would also think the probability is pretty high for this whole story being full of sh17 too.

Just my opinion.

And you believe he was just a nice enough guy to give you a $175.00 cigar? For which he way overpaid, real or not.

Current pricing is in the $1100.00/ box range for 56s. Which is way to f*cking much imo. Wish I had bought a few more boxes when they were sub $300 per box. Ahhh well, hindsight.

I honestly don't remember what they cost back in 2011.

Price does not dictate authenticity. I've seen boxes of fake Davidoffs go for many thousands.

I'd be surprised if most of us haven't unknowingly had, be it bought, traded or gifted, a fake Cuban cigar or more along the way. It happens.

I don't know your friend, I haven't seen the cigar you are talking about. I have no idea if it is or is not authentic.

I will say though that the more you argue about something of which you know nothing about, the more of a dipshizzle you look like. Stop while you are only slightly behind. Smoke the cigar, or don't. While there are some caution flags, it's not like any of us can truly tell what it is based on some written text.

Bad fakes are easy to spot once you have been shown one or two.

Good fakes can be difficult. Especially if you are not familiar with the profile of the cigar.

Not all vendors are honest. Knowing which ones are honest is key when you are starting out. You can then learn from what is authentic.

There are some guides out there on the internet, but I don't think many have been updated in a long time to reflect the new packaging and security measures that Habanos has implemented.

I think Habanos might actually have something on their website. And there is Trevor's website www.cubancigarwebsite.com, but that's just really a list of what's been released, so unless the sizes don't match or the bands are grossly inaccurate, then it's not going to be much good as a "spot a fake tutorial". Ultimately though, those sites are all just pictures. Much more can be learned hands on.

If he paid $1750/box in 2011 he has no idea what he is doing. As has been said they were selling for $286 - $325 depending on size back then. That is what I paid for boxes dated 2011 and it was close to the going rate until wrapper leaf became an issue a few years later.

#hamk post a pic

Real or fake it is a nice gesture (assuming he thinks it's real)

I always thought their normal price was around thirty bucks a stick.

How do you tell if a 2011 is real? I saw something that newer ones have a holigraphic bar on them, but looked like that started in 2014 (from what I could tell from the cryptic posts.

I will take a picture when I get home and post it. Although I am sure that everyone will say it is a fake, just to screw with me.

Like gummy said, it is a nice gesture either way. I'm not trying to BS or dig a hole whatever BS ThunderGerbil is spewing. Just received a nice gift and wanted to share.

So I did some more research and was incorrect on the holigraphic bar...it just changed in 2014. Below is what I gathered:

-Lettering is slightly raised.
-Ring of black around head
-Head looks slightly rippled and should have a holographic mini-head inside (but only seen when turned a certain way).
-Front Holigraphic bar should pick-up a lot of color/light.
-Label should be crisp and perfect looking

Anything else I should look for?

Now the question, if I think it is a fake, should I tell the guy. Not sure I would want to know. haha

"If I think it is a fake" If you aren't certain, don't say anything, other than how much you appreciate the gift.

Only tell him if you are absolutely certain, and explain why...I was in a similar situation with my neighbor. He's a young cigar noob (but a great auto mechanic). He went to Mexico and came back with a handful of "Cubans". He knew I enjoyed cigars, so he gave me a Montecristo #2, and was absolutely beaming. I thanked him and later took a hard look at the stogie, and was suspicious. I compared the gift cigar to an authentic that I had. The bands were slightly different with the Mexican band a little fuzzy around the lettering and logo edges. The wrapper coloring was different: the gift cigar was darker. It was just a tad longer than mine. The roll, the space between overlaps in the wrapper, was different, but that could be explained by different batches. The truth was revealed when I smoked the cigar. Totally different flavor profile...more like a Nicaraguan with pepper, leather, wood and harshness. I spoke with my neighbor, and told him what I thought. I gave him an authentic Monte #2 and showed him the bands. He did say that the vendor had the "Cubans" displayed in glass-top boxes. After he smoked the Monte that I gave him, he thanked me, but I could tell he was crushed....

you would do much harm if you told him you thought they were fake, but in fact, they are authentic.

Granted. I would think highly unlikely in this instance though. I dunno, maybe he's hitting on Hamk and wants a dinner date?

I would let him know if you discover it is fake for that reason.

Maybe also he'll even pick up the tab at dinner instead of going Dutch.
