I'm a 60 year old, semi-retired contractor, and have abused my legs and knees over the years. I'm trying to finish my Jersey home and list it so I can get out of the state. About 8 weeks ago, I went to get out of bed after a hard day's work, and could barely walk. After a week of shooting pains down both legs, and weakness in my knees I went to the doc. He ordered X-rays. His conclusion - MILD arthritis in my knees. Hate to inform him that this is in no way MILD arthritis.

Starting seeing my chiropractor. After a few weeks, I was finally able to walk with only a constant, steady discomfort.

Finally said the heck with this and decided to see another doctor last Thursday. Muscle disease called Polymyalgia Rheumatica. Treatment is 6 months to 3 years of low dose steroids. Fun, fun. Doc said results would be instantaneous. Wow, was he correct. 70% of pain gone after first dose. All pain gone after a 2nd dose. Feeling 10 years younger and ready to get this house finished.

Saturday, I get up from the dinning room table and hear a tear/pop in my right knee. Overnight the knee swells up and I can't walk again. Last night the pain was excruciating and I could not sleep a wink. Pain killers wouldn't touch it. So, back to the doc today. Torn Meniscus (knee cartilage), torn tendon, torn calf muscle. Out of action for at least the next 8 weeks. I guess I'll never get the heck out of Jersey.

Oh, well, look on the bright side. Nothing to do but smoke cigars for the next 8 weeks, lol.

I get gout attacks. Intensely painful... Oh, and I'll be 64 in July. fog

But... I discovered, for me, Naproxen Sodium, generic over the counter, is a magic miracle drug!

Nope, her name is Donna. I'm her hubby, David (long time C-bidder dpnewell with the Rottweiler avatar). She lets me use her account as I'm banned till 2049, lol. But you knew that already, right? I've learned my lesson. No more controversial or C-bid complaint posts, ever! I'm just glad to be able to reconnect with (and bomb) old friends.

At least you got to your 50’s or so, hopefully before arthritis set in. I wasn’t as fortunate. I have Rheumatoid arthritis and let me tell you, it’s a B*#%. There are days that you don’t want to get out of bed, but you gotta work, so you take 600 mg of Ibuprofen, 500 mg of Acetaminophen, and top it with a strong cup of coffee. Then you move your complaining body whether it’s ready or not. I hate dealing with it, but I am stuck with it. At least I have a high pain tolerance........ Oh, and I have been fighting with this crap for 13 years......

I do hope your pains are temporary.

Thanks. I'll look into that. Last summer I grabbed some CW Hemp Extract. A friend thought it would help with my food allergies. It did, but made me irritabal and jittery, so I stopped. This morning I was beside myself in pain, and decided to try the Hemp Extract again. Pain subsided in a matter of minutes. I took another dose around noon, and am walking better then in weeks. Doc perscribed Tramadol, but I'm trying to avoid it. I'm planning on another dose of Hemp Extract before bed. If I sleep through the night, I won't be touching the Tramadol.

Yes Joel, that La Palina puts out some smoke. When I smoked the first one there was so much smoke that I kept looking at it to make sure it wasn't a Nica Rustica, lol.

I've tried a few candelas, but found most to be boring, though the Fuente 8-5-8 candela and the Illusione candela where pretty good. One I really, really loved was the Asylum Orge 50. It's a barber pole candela/habano. I won 10 for under $2 each, and they where fantastic. Now I can't find them under $8.

I'm so sorry to hear of your pain and discomfort. It must be really hard on you. I have a friend who became pretty much crippled a few years ago. It was traced back to a bad reaction to a flu shot. He turned me on to CW Hemp Extract which has been helping him. I tried some today, and the pain subsided. I try to avoid pain meds. My chiropractor suggested deer antler velvet extract. He's been using it for 5 years, is 5 years older then me, but looks way younger and is as strong as an ox. It contains IGF-1 and IGF-2 growth factors. I've been taking it for a couple weeks, feel younger, look younger, and my gray hair is starting to turn black again. Oh, and my blood pressure used to be in the 140s/150s. I have a home monitor and check it daily. Since taking the velvet extract, my blood pressure is in the 120s. I'm going to give it a good month or so before recommending it.

Hope you get better David...getting old does suck... it seems that the body's warranty runs out at about 50...stuff starts breaking down, lose function, doesn't heal as fast, injures easily, hurts more,etc...

That's where I was at about 8 years ago...I'll be 65 this year....knee pain kept me off my feet and interfered with my sleep...feared damaging my kidneys and liver due to the amount of OTC nsaid pain-killers I consumed daily...

Finally went to an independent (non-Kaiser) orthopedic surgeon who specialized in knee surgery. He looked at the MRI and said I needed a total knee replacement in my right knee, and that the left knee was also arthritically damaged but he didn't recommend replacing both knees at the same time.

Now I'm mostly pain free, but can't do some of the physical activities I did before: no tennis or other contact sports involving running, jumping, starting and stopping, and abrupt change of direction. But i can walk, fish and ride a bike without pain. Sleep better and not taking nsaids in huge amounts daily.

Can't think of a single good reason to have both knees replaced at the same time.

No need to be sorry lol. Yes sir I am only 47. Most people do think I am older. I remember the first time I asked my wife out. She flipped chit on me and asked "Why the hell would I think that she would go out with a 40plus year old man." I was 21 at the time. I had to show her my drivers license to get her to believe my age. I am just now really starting to look my actual age. Eh?

When I had my first knee replaced there was a woman down the hall in her 60's who had both knees replaced at once.....she was a school teacher and had them both done in late spring so she would recuperate and be back to teaching by the fall.......I can' t imagine how she got around those first months......she must have been one tough cookie.Anxious

Quick update. I was suffering severe leg pain the past few days and tons of swelling, so I went back to the Doc this morning. He drained two large vials of fluid from the knee and gave me Cortisone shots. If things don't greatly improve in the next 2 weeks, he's going to order an MRI with the possibility of knee surgery. Fun, fun.

Sounds like a Baker's cyst? The MRI I had on my knee showed a small one along with three torn meniscus. Had surgery for the meniscus and three shots of lube (Supartz) but now the surgeon is saying I'm bone on bone. The Cortisone shot I had only helped hide the discomfort for about a month.

I'm going to a seminar on stem cell therapy before deciding on more surgery.

Frank, believe it or not, that was a caffeine allergy. I always had coffee in the morning with my cigar. I had to go to herbal tea for a while, but now I'm back on decaf coffee. Some of the newer "mountain water process" decafs taste as good as the full octane stuff. I pickup single origin K-cups from a craft roaster in PA.

Sister in law has a Baker's cyst, but her symptoms sound different then mine. Oh well, at least the Doc is now talking about the possibility of an MRI. Now a days they have to try all kind of treatments first before insurance will authorize one.

Sorry, missed this. I had my own awning/window/carport/patio cover business, and did all my own installations. A tremendous amount of ladder work everyday. Taught myself plumbing, tile and carpentry. Years ago a good friend of mine who is a licensed electrician taught me electrical. I have since wired several houses (and passed all inspections).

Several years ago, we bought a place in NW NC, part way up the Blue Ridge Mountains. Trying to get the Jersey house finished and sold, so we can get to NC full time.

Update

After several weeks of increasing pain and no improvement, my doc was finally able to order an Ultrasound and MRI. Ultrasound was good. No blood clots. Not so good with the MRI. In addition to torn muscles and tendons, the MRI showed that my leg is also broken. So for the past month or so, I've been unknowingly hobbling around on a broken leg. No wonder the pain is getting worse.

Next step is to see an Orthopedic doctor. Just waiting on the referral for insurance purposes.

I ordered a hinged knee brace which came yesterday. Annoying at first, but it really seems to help with the pain.

Hopefully surgery will not be necessary, Jamie, but the earliest appointment for the bone and joint specialist isn't till next Tuesday. That means I've already wasted 6 weeks, and still don't have a course of treatment. Looks like the house won't be listed now till July or August. I really wanted it listed for the spring selling season.

Oh well, it is what it is. There is nothing I can do about it. I may as well try to enjoy the down time, and maybe put a dent in those coolers of mine.
