d'oh! New Guy

My name is Ross. I'm new to CBID and the Cigar game. I'm trying a bit of everything. So far I've liked the RP vintage 1990, CAO Gearhead. I really like the Short Stories and Papa Fritas because I rarely have enough time to enjoy full sized Cigars. My favorite so far is probably the Oliva V Malanio. I really want to try the Feral Pig.

I have a 50 gar humidor. Its already not enough so I'm looking into tuppidores.

I've done some light bidding on here and I have watched probably 100 bids so far to watch prices. Im not one to get in a bidding war. Im here for deals not competition.

Any recommendations or advice is appreciated and thank ya'll for all the info in the beginners post.

I didn't know what to put in an intro. So let the fun begin.

If you like the smaller cigars, look for My Uzi Weighs A Ton Baitfish. Aka MUWAT Baitfaish. Five pack comes in a brown paper bag type wrapper. Definitely one of my favorite short smokes.

Aloha New Guy! Welcome from Hawaii. ThumpUp

Stinger and Delta have suggested a couple of my top choices for short smokes so let me add:

Oliva Serie G Special G - like the Fuente Short Story, comes in either a Cameroon or Maduro wrapper
RoMa Craft Intemperance Whiskey Rebellion 1794 Hamilton - after 6+ months of rest / nap time, these are tasty
Tatuaje Petite Tatuaje - 20-30 minute smoke in either Habano or Connecticut Broadleaf

There are also a whole bunch of petite coronas from Cuba but that’s a whole ‘nother discussion for another time.

Btw, pancakes or waffles?

I'll address this one.........Most of the HTF and $12-15 sleeper bottles are in Kentucky.Which leads me to my question.Where do you live?I'm looking for my Kentucky connection.

BTW one of my favorite short sticks is El Triunfador petit coronas......they age extremely well.

Thanks for all the recommendations.
I've already caught some of the "insightful" links.
I prefer waffled pancakes.

Sounds good. I'll look at that instead. Is it me or are there a bunch of distributors in here? I'm seeing some crazy volume buys.

Welcome to the site.

David

Or if you like slightly larger cigars, try the MUWAT Nightcrawler at 4.5x50 (often called the "Rothschild" vitola). Drew Estate specifically designed it to be a Baitfish that lasts longer. They come packaged in a brown paper bag of 10.

I prefer the longer smoking time of the Nightcrawler to the Baitfish, which tends to end right as I'm really getting into it and wanting more. Reportedly, the Nightcrawler was created because a whole lot of people told Drew this and asked for a slightly larger Baitfish.

Reportedly the Baitfish and Nightcrawler share a blend (which you'd expect if one's a larger version of the other), but that blend is significantly different from what the rest of the MUWAT line (all the larger vitolas) use.

Also keep in mind that MUWAT get a lot better with age (hence the nickname "MU-WAIT"). If you like them, consider buying a lot of them and sitting on most of them for a long time and you'll be a happy camper.

^ nice, thank you.

I've got a few noob questions.

1st How do I try and get a Vet so i can avoid some of the embarrassment ahead?

2nd Just got my first delivery and they are hot as hell. Should I be worried about beetles? Wondering if people freeze their deliveries?

3rd Is it time to stop using this into as a FAQ?

I've tried searching threads for these questions.

Welcome fellow Noob! Hopefully you find some great smokes, if you like the darker side, hit me up, I love anything that’s darker than a Habano wrapper.

Also, as for your question on being worried about beetles, I have a smaller 50 gar humidor that I put my newest editions into. They remain there for up to 3 months before being moved to my bigger humidor.

If you're worried about it, just throw them in the freezer for a few days at 0deg F or less.

That'll kill anything living in there.

I used to be a habitual freezer, I've been slacking lately... I do a visual inspection though if I don't plan on freezing.

You can tap the cigars with the foot aiming down and if small brown flakes come out (almost looks like dirt), a beetle went to town on that cigar (small brown flakes are bug sh*t).

Hope that helps.

I keep in the celo when they are new. I might start off by being a "habitual" freezer, just to be safe. It definitely helps.
Thank you everyone.
I can already see I'm going to need a new humidor.

I haven't frozen cigars in a few years. No problems - so unless I pick up something new from an unknown source I'm over freezing. I do put all new arrivals in certain storage containers just in case. Forget the humidor and go coolidor or tubador. I have one tubador that hasn;t been watered in years because it gets opened about once a month and has beads. Humidors usually need a watering monthly or more often.

Middle to old.
I'm not young anymore, sigh.

Ewok, I like that story better then the truth. Let's go with it.

I'm gonna go fight with my humidor some more.

It's a progression of sorts...
Noop
N00b..........with two zeros
Noob

Takes a while to become a noob...

Bovedas and beads are a good combo to use in a traditional wood humidor, as long as it has a decent seal.

I started with a Boveda 72% and my Humidor was at 62% so I put two 75% packs in it and it went to 64%. So I re-seasoned it and it was holding 72% till I put my cigars back. and it went to 68% (I was good with that). But today it looks like its dipping again.

I'm gonna leave it a bit and see how it looks tomorrow. I might be impatient.

Feel like I'm going to be a noop for awhile lol.

I'll look into the beads. Thanks King of the Cove.

hello rrmfly... I can tell from your name you're a railroad enthusiast... but the proper way to say it is railroads "are" fly not "m" fly... as such, you'll need renaming...

you want locomotive breathe or caboose? let's just split the difference and call you caboose breathe...

Seconded. Wood humidors are just suboptimal in every way, unless you want an eye-candy piece to show off to your friends.

Big-ass coolers, big-ass gasketed sealing containers, or my favorite: big-ass Sterilite (or equivalent) containers with the handles that lock up over top of the lid, but no gasket, to allow a tiny bit of air exchange, which has benefits (letting possible ammonia escape, and some other good stuff). Preferably transparent so you can eyeball your lovelies and read the hygrometer without having to open it.

Nobody who goes this way EVER looks back to wood humidors. These things are superior in every way, and far cheaper too. Want that Spanish cedar smell and any other benefits of it (antibeetle/humidity buffering/etc.)? Drop some pieces of it in the cooler/Sterilite, done.

I was looking at getting one of the acrylic jars for stuff that I'm ready to smoke. But I'll look into the starlite containers too.

Do we have a thread for what people are having luck with as far as humidors?

From what I had read, I thought 64% would be too dry.

The consensus here is 64 is good, many prefer a little lower even.

My drawers range from anywhere from the low to mid 60s, but I do live in the desert and it's currently summer, so there's that... and my wineador usually has about the same range too.

Get a few DIESEL "ANYTHING" 5 PACKS
OR BETTER YET SAMPLERS OF ONE BLENDS 5 VITOLAS OR SEVERAL DIFFERENT BLENDS IN A 10 PACK SAMPLER...

I LOVE THEM, WELL CONSTRUCTED, smooth and teastefull, not harsh, even burns...
Just a great cigar at low bid prices if you can win on an off day or closing time...
