Merriam Webster defines the word racism as follows:

a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.

It's my opinion that having personally held race-related beliefs is pretty normal. But to act on that belief crosses a line. Which sometimes just means opening up your big mouth.

Most of us grew up telling, accepting and laughing at racist and ethnic jokes. Was ok. Then. But times have changed. My 30 something kids wouldn't think these jokes are funny.

Of course there are differences between races and ethnicities. And why ignore them. Celebrate them as per the cliche.

Or shaddup...

Society is still playing catch-up ball. They'll get there. Maybe.

All in The Family satirized those beliefs while painting Archie as a product of his environment.
He didn't (normally?) express hate, but did express his opinions on others as if they were common knowledge.

I get a kick out of it when cons wistfully point to this show...that was created and produced by liberals.

TG, look at the definition of racism in #151

Oxford living dictionary

Racist

A person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or who believes that a particular race is superior to another.

Neither speaks of degrees. Something is racist or it is not. I do think Dave is right in that perspective is essential. I don't agree with Delta. In his example both acts were racist. One act was not criminal, the other was criminal.

There are shades of grey in that given the surrounding circumstance the same action may or may not be racist. There are no shades of grey in that there are different levels of racism, though there are different types of racism.

Barr's tweet was racist, no more no less. I have no intention of agreeing with you. Truth be told, we have different opinions. I don't agree with your logic, you don't agree with mine. I enjoyed trading insults with you for a while. Yours were quite good and funny.

I'm not sure that attitudes about race have changed much...and whether PC/taboos about racist expressions have improved racial relations.

Instead of having a release valve, where a racist can laugh at different people in the privacy of their own homes decades ago, and observe socially correct civil behavior in public, we now have entitled racists calling the police on people going about their lives, doing normal things in "places where they don't belong"...Starbucks, public park, stairwell of a dorm on campus, etc...

wonder if this author is onto something...
