The book is rarely actually banned. Just challenged frequently.
But you keep pretending that it's happening or that anyone is trying to hide from history.

And so are books like:
The Color Purple
Animal Farm
Gone With The Wind
The Grapes of Wrath.
To Kill a Mockingbird

"Challenged" is equivalent to being "Banned" in most public schools and libraries.

But you keep pretending it's not censorship as long as they aren't burning books... yet.

4 of the 5 books above were required reading when I was in school, along with "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn"

Banning books is bad on multiple levels. It decreases freedom of speech. It is a classic example of big brother deciding what is best. It certainly is pandering to a specific segment of society.

As far as Trump I guess you can get worked up over something he may or may not have said. It is only a word. I get worked up over certain words, or phrases, and later realize I made a mistake. Also if he said the word, what context was it used in? Why was it or was it not racist? To tell you the truth this is a non issue for me. Again, it is only a word.

Retired Indy 500 and Formula One driver Derek Daly was fired from his job as a TV racing analyst this week after news of his use of a racial slur 35 years ago resurfaced, but he says the story being told about him is all wrong.

The controversy started last week when longtime Indianapolis Colts radio play-by-play announcer Bob Lamey, 80, was overheard telling someone about an interview he remembered from the Indy 500, in which a racing driver was asked if he thought anyone was holding back during qualifying, to which the he allegedly answered “there aren’t any n---ers in this race."

Lamey apologized to those around him, but retired from his job in the wake of the incident.

“The Colts deplore and do not tolerate the use of any racial slur – in any context,” the team said in a statement.

It was later reported that Derek Daly, an Irishman who now lives in Indianapolis, was the source of the comment, and his employer, WISH-TV, immediately severed ties with him. However, while Daly admitted using the word, he said Lamey’s recounting of the incident was incorrect and slanderous.

Daly told Fox59 that what actually happened was that radio reporter Larry Henry asked him what it was like being a rookie foreign driver on an American team, and Daly said if anything went wrong the only “n---er in the wood pile” would be me.

Henry told the Indianapolis Star he remembers the interview, and that he froze for a moment on air before tossing the segment back to the studio.

Daly claims he had no idea that the term was considered offensive in the United States, and that it was commonly used in Ireland when he was growing up.

“I quickly learned what a derogatory term it was. When I was first informed of this, I was mortified at the offense I might have caused people. I have therefore never used the word since. I made this mistake once, but never again,” Daly told Fox59.

Lamey has not yet commented on Daly’s version of events.

Pennsylvania priests can't be prosecuted for raping children because it was 30 years ago....

But a foreigner without clear knowledge of how bad it was, used 'the word'.. without even referring to anyone but himself.....and gets fired 35 years later.

we do have to rein in the civility police from time to time...

I remember in the 70's, plenty of older white sportscasters and sports figures, people with a long history of respected, symbiotic and amiable relationships with blacks, getting canned over unintentionally derogatory statements made on air: Howard Cosell's "monkey" ; Al Campanis' "those people can't swim"

we should hear the comments in context , evaluate the intent of the person speaking and consider his past conduct before pulling the lever on the guillotine...

Lilly Diabetes has parted ways with driver Conor Daly ahead of his NASCAR debut after reports surfaced that his father, Derek Daly, a retired Indy 500 and Formula One driver, used the N-word during an interview in the 1980s.

On August 24, the pharmaceutical company announced they would be ending the sponsorship of the 26-year-old driver ahead of the NASCAR Xfinity race scheduled for August 25. Lilly confirmed in a statement that its partnership with Daly, who primarily races for IndyCar, was intended to raise awareness for treatment options and resources for people living with diabetes.

Really TG? Trump (you mean the guy who said "Laziness is a trait in blacks ... I believe that. No black person will be president again any time soon." ?) was friends with Jesse Jackson (you mean the guy who called NYC hymietown?) and that proves he isn't racist?  Where'd you hear that? The media???

You frame some of the dumbest chit with just enough wit to make the dumbest chit seem plausible. But it's still chit.

Be honest. Do you really give a damn if Trump is, or anyone is racist?

You don't. I answered for you. Cause you're not self-aware enough to answer honestly or to know you're an apologist. Which is cool. I really don't GAF. You're amusing...

I don't claim to speak for black people. I interact with them on a regular basis and, if you gaf, they hate him. If you choose to believe that black people are enamored with this president, that's, well,  sweet.

Guilt? Dumb. I feel zero guilt and I'm not trying to guilt shame anyone. That's dumb.
Besides, for that you'd have to have a conscience and well, we know the deal there, right?

I'm interested in and sympathetic to minorities plights in America.

  Sue me.

Who knows, you, for all I know, honestly believe the man is not a racist. But have you ever researched black opinion? I know, Kanye...I mean any other opinions? Have you been curious enough to fact check?  Did you know that the government alleged that Trump employees marked minority tenant applicants with codes, such as "No. 9" or "C" for "colored." Or is that just business? Good people on both sides...?

At one time I thought you were a pretty bright guy.

But you lack curiosity. And empathy.

Oh, you're clever, minus depth, substance and heart.

Maybe it's laziness. Maybe you're just dumb.

Too bad...

You "interact with black people'.
Bravo.
I choose to simply interact with people.
Sorry you feel compelled to label people by their skin color.

The mother of a 10-year-old boy in North Carolina is outraged that her son was recently punished for calling his fifth grade teacher "ma’am.”

“I was in disbelief,” Teretha Wilson, the boy’s mother, told Fox News on Saturday.

Wilson noticed her son, Tamarion, was not himself when she picked him up from the bus stop earlier this week.
“I asked him what was wrong, and he told me he got in trouble for saying 'ma’am' to a teacher. I was confused,” she said.

Inquiring further, Wilson asked her son to give more detail about the incident. That’s when the fifth-grader at North East Carolina Preparatory School in Tarboro, North Carolina, pulled out a piece of lined paper with the word ma’am written dozens of times.

Wilson was shocked, especially when Tamarion told her that his teacher, who has not been formally identified, told him that he was required to return the piece of paper with a parent’s signature.

The young boy also claimed that the teacher threatened to throw something at him during the incident, his mother said.

“He was disappointed because he felt like he had done something wrong,” she said.

The next afternoon, Wilson went to the school to meet with Tamarion’s teacher and the school's principal. With her she brought a separate piece of paper on which her son had written the definition of ma’am. (According to the Oxford Dictionaries, ma’am is defined as “a term of respectful or polite address used for a woman”).

Wilson claims Tamarion’s teacher told her that her son “was getting on her nerve when he called her ma’am" but “couldn’t give me a reason of why that was bad.”

I want to say you're just being argumentative, but that's not an argument.

I'm not sure they're sentences.

What's your point? Black people don't exist?

Well, they do. And not surprisingly only 1% of them voted for Trump.

If you gave a damn you'd search around as to how they feel about him: he's cutting Pell Grants, accused them of being lazy, has the endorsement of the kkk, slandered Obama and called countries they live in chitholes, made it hard for them to rent Trump apartments, wouldn't speak before the NAACP. This is the guy who said " I've got black people counting my money. I hate it! The only people I want count my money are short guys that wear yamulkes"

I'll never forget the first time someone addressed my wife as 'ma'am'.
She was upset that whole day.

And to be fair, Romney got only 6%. Vs Obama

But Drafter, seriously, Google why do blacks hate Trump. They believe he's racist.

That's grand.
I say that I interact with people and you assume that therefore "black people don't exist". Because I didn't specify their color.
You are mentally categorizing people by skin color with every comment you make.

Tail: There are 100 people over there.
Huck: But 12 of them are black.

Get over yourself.
You claim to do research and then say things like 1% of "them" voted for Trump?

You drip with racial prejudice. You see everything by color. You can't ignore the color of people's skin.
Then you tell us all how "they" feel.

Your lack of self awareness regarding your racial tendencies is unequaled on these boards.
So you've got that.

In that case, if you see yourself as someone who is self-aware, you must loathe yourself. Or just be kidding yourself.

We are having a discussion about a segment of our population. I'm asserting, correctly, that the vast majority of them, oh yeah, black people, hate Trump. You lacking any info or probably interest, attack my character rather than the subject, namely, BLACK PEOPLE HATE AND FEAR TRUMP. It's a fact...how does that not say more about you than me!?

Of course the black voting population dislike President Trump.
As a group, they are largely democrat.
And democrats dislike President Trump.

So here is the fact that matters: Dems hate Trump.

And here's Huck's take on it: Blacks hate Trump.

Once again proving his desire to label things by skin color.

"Apeman"

I think I'm sophisticated
'Cos I'm living my life like a good homosapien
But all around me everybody's multiplying
Till they're walking round like flies man
So I'm no better than the animals sitting in their cages
In the zoo man
'Cos compared to the flowers and the birds and the trees
I am an ape man
I think I'm so educated and I'm so civilized
'Cos I'm a strict vegetarian
But with the over-population and inflation and starvation
And the crazy politicians
I don't feel safe in this world no more
I don't want to die in a nuclear war
I want to sail away to a distant shore and make like an ape man
I'm an ape man, I'm an ape ape man
I'm an ape man I'm a King Kong man I'm ape ape man
I'm an ape man
'Cos compared to the sun that sits in the sky
Compared to the clouds as they roll by
Compared to the bugs and the spiders and flies
I am an ape man
In man's evolution he has created the cities and
The motor traffic rumble, but give me half a chance
And I'd be taking off my clothes and living in the jungle
'Cos the only time that I feel at ease
Is swinging up and down in a coconut tree
Oh what a life of luxury to be like an ape man
I'm an ape, I'm an ape ape man, I'm an ape man
I'm a King Kong man, I'm a voo-doo man
I'm an ape man
I look out my window, but I can't see the sky
'Cos the air pollution is fogging up my eyes
I want to get out of this city alive
And make like an ape man
Come and love me, be my ape man girl
And we will be so happy in my ape man world
I'm an ape man, I'm an ape ape man, I'm an ape man
I'm a King Kong man, I'm a voo-doo man
I'm an ape man
I'll be your Tarzan, you'll be my Jane
I'll keep you warm and you'll keep me sane
And we'll sit in the trees and eat bananas all day
Just like an ape man
I'm an ape man, I'm an ape ape man, I'm an ape man
I'm a King Kong man, I'm a voo-doo man
I'm an ape man.
I don't feel safe in this world no more
I don't want to die in a nuclear war
I want to sail away to a distant shore
And make like an ape man.

c'mon, my brothers...you were around when Howard Cosell was famously dumped for using the "monkey" word about an NFL receiver on air nearly 50 years ago...that word has a long history of demeaning and dehumanizing black people...in the sporting world, soccer has been fighting openly hostile and racist spectators who throw bananas and make monkey sounds at black players...

It was pretty common for people who used it frequently when talking about the Obamas to be, themselves, called "racists"...and perhaps if you are insensitive to the hurtfulness of that term to a whole race, maybe...

in the current kerfuffle, do you think DeSantis would have said "monkey around" if his opponent was white or latino or asian?

and we talked about crackers around the dinner table...

would he have been self-aware enough to avoid telling you kids to stop monkeying around if you had a black friend over ? If he did say that, would you be OK with it?

I dunno... In this case it was a pretty strained phrase. I've never heard someone say "monkey this up" before...

There was a kerfuffle at U Wisconsin a decade or two ago because a black student was upset at the professors use of the term "niggardly"... Funny enough, niggardly is a real word and the root of the word is in no way whatsoever related to the n word. In that case I would have to side with the professor.

"Monkey this up"... I don't know if thats a phrase anyone uses in normal conversation. It seems odd that it would be the one that popped in his head for this speech. He could have said "screw this up"... Seems weird.

Monkey around is a common term... I wouldn't be that surprised if someone used that term.... People yell it at their kids all the time, I could see it get used automatically. .... But I don't even know what monkey this up is supposed to mean....
