Freedom wise, it is disturbing, OTOH, we already use the SSN number all over the place and in spite of existing laws.

I would like to point out it could be a voter ID card for national elections.

Haven't opened the story yet, but I couldn't agree more about the misuse/abuse of SS numbers.

I was that guy in line at the store writing a check who refused to let them write my ss number on it, managers would come to the register, and people in line behind me most times would end up agreeing with me.

Never intended to be a national ID card.

would this be a thing if illegal immigrants looked like Norwegians?

Anybody recall the kerfuffle caused by Arizona's efforts to impose a similar ID requirement, SB 1070, a few years ago?

no, it is mostly aimed at immigration along the southern border...and enforcement of a ID provision gives enforcement authorities a broad latitude to "profile" based on physical appearance...would an ID law be included if the people coming across the border looked like the average white American?

I'm not really on board with the mandatory ID thing. if the goal is simply to curb illegal employment there's prolly a better way... Like letting law enforcement enforce existing laws...
Privacy invasion has pretty much already happened tho thanks to da internets and cell phones and stuff.... Mellow

But it sure is much easier to aggregate your data using your SSN, said the government and the crooks.
