If Edward McDaniel also known as Chief Wahoo McDaniel got a hold of Sally Star this chit wouldn't be happening. He would have utilized that famous chop of his and slapped the Re Re out of that child.

I guess I am the odd ball out. My x3 great grandmother walked on the trail of tears. I have family that lives on the Cherokee reservation. Native american history runs deep in my family. I have always heard the word Injun as a short version of Indian. Just like has not vs hasn't. I have never heard the word used with derogatory intent. I have only heard it as a slang term. Just like the word ain't. I have been taught most of my life that there is no such word as ain't even though it was a commonly used contraction or slang. Granted it has been 10 years or so since I have been to Cherokee and things might have changed. Now I will say I am not sure as far as say Indonesian folks maybe its those folks that see it as derogatory? No clue on that one.

I can tell you this, everyone in my Native side including me would roll their eyes at what you said. With that, my grandparent's generation was different, they would freely use racial slurs and nobody seemed to care.

My Italian grandfather called me a little injun when I was a little kid, and my Native grandmother called me a wopasioux...

It really didn't sting till I was old enough to understand.

I loved them both, but could have done without the ignorance.

I got you. That's the thing I think first is the intent on how its being used, just my OP which means nothing. Second I think how we was raised plays into it as well. With my family we are very proud of our background and heritage but it was never taken as a derogatory word. No one had ever in my lifetime from that side of the family even expressed anger, remorse or being offended over the term and they even used it themselves. With that being the case I guess one could say I myself was raised in ignorance by the very people we are speaking of. If that is the case I have never been taught any different so I have never felt the term was derogatory. Also though I will have to say, I am not the type that puts that much power in words. I do on the other hand put a lot of power in the intent words are used which could be my mistake. But, if I put that power in strictly the word itself then I would be another one of those folks that keep my panties in a knot 25-8 and I refuse to allow myself to be that person. I cant take being emotionally warped for that length of time and it phugs up my Zen.

Let's start a go-fund-me for bgz so he can restock on tissues.

Sting?
Really??

Because your grandparents used terms of endearment that you misconstrue as offensive?

You watch too much Lifetime television.

Well, in my defense, when I began to really understand the concept of racism, I was about 8 or 9... I was numb to it by time I was in junior high :P

I'm guessing most people are "snowflakes" when they're 8 or 9.

Maybe today.

In my day if we got hurt we rubbed dirt on it.
If we were called names we either defended our honor or realized that sticks and stones may break our bones, but names will NEVER hurt us.

Never.
Especially if the word was said with love.

I thought we could do the guy thing here: punch each other on the shoulder, spit, swear, and laugh at things by putting them in perspective. But you demand to take it down the serious road.
So I ask you:
Do you think your grandma called you that out of racism? Or love?

Doesn't matter, you missed my point(s).

* Old people don't have filters.

* Times were different then than now and the language used.

* Racism is Racism no matter how you paint it.

I've stated on these boards before that I believe everyone is at least a little bit racist.

I'm of the opinion that because we are animals that evolved over time where being wary of those that are different is a genetically hard coded survival tactic, we discriminate by default and it takes work to overcome that.

Seriously though... I had to f*ck with you, you threw the "I" word out there... that's just begging to grab my theatrical ire.

Just so you know, you're highly unlikely to actually piss me off. If I'm arguing with you, I'm just arguing with you for the sake of arguing, because I do that. I can be an unapologetic azzhole.

If you noticed, I haven't used the "I" word again.

Hell, it's been a couple days and I'm having withdrawals.

Can I keep using it in reference to squaw Elizabeth Warren?

Tail, I knew a nice old guy who was a holicost survivor. He has since passed. It took him many years before he was comfortable enough to tell me his story. It truely was an amazing story of the human spirit and the will to survive. In 1943 he escaped from Sobibor.

There are certain words that are racist and hurt. Do you really think if you called him a Nazi it wouldn't have hurt him?
