Anyone have experience dealing with insurance companies as an occasional cigar smoker? I've read various opinions on this. I have an insurance physical coming up so am not smoking leading up to it, but I'm interested to know if anyone has had problems with this.

Thanks.

I tell them I smoke cigars but don't inhale. Haven't noticed any problem so far with Pacific Life. fog

Lie… or pony-up if you smoke a lot.

In the end you would probably be better off investing more into your retirement accounts gaining interest than paying huge premiums to an insurance company for a fixed amount.

It's OK to lie to insurance companies.

That is called a material omission or misrepresentation in civil law and fraud in criminal law.

Depends on the cost of the insurance though.

I have life insurance paid 100% by employer for 2 years salary.

I buy additional for less than $10/mo which increases my coverage to 3 years salary and covers wife and child for 10k each.

Depends

All life policies are subject to a 2 year contestability clause. Die before the 2nd policy anniversary date and they may or may not investigate depending on the cause of death. Past that point and it’s going to be paid 99.99999% of time assuming it’s an A rated or better carrier.

That being said, if a full blood workup is required don’t be surprised if it’s issued standard rate versus preferred if you’re in good health. Nicotine use can be determined from blood samples. Even if you don’t inhale nicotine is absorbed into your blood through mouth tissue.

My wife and I returned from in March 2013. I was 58 years old. I applied for a 10-year term life rate that would cover the cost of the mortgage of the home we were able to buy (just under ($200,000).

I took the physical...they asked, "do you smoke?" I proudly said, "Yes, I enjoy cigars." After a quick discussion ("do you inhale?" - "heck no", etc.), the examiner said, "Non-smoker". I asked how that could be, he told me that (at that time), there was zero evidence that people that smoked cigars (without inhaling) were candidates for lung and cigarette-related cancers. I asked them to put that in writing...they did.

So, here is my question: Have things changed?

thank you.

I'm gonna use this story as justification for lying to insurance companies.
