Mattis resigns, shut down looms, market plunges.

I know many of you don't see it this way. I think our country now sets at a dangerous precipice.

I think the last professional in the cabinet that I trust just resigned. I think Trump just gave Putin the middle east on a silver platter. I think shutting down the government is irrational and dangerous. I think the market will dive further due to a government shut down. The market is in the midst of the worst December since the great depression. I think we are headed towards a depression.

Just my thoughts, but a worthwhile discussion I think.

#1 speyside...

I agree with your post.
I was really worried when Gen. Kelly said he was leaving after Dec. 31...now Gen. Mattis?
This is not good at all.

I think you forgot another BIG PROBLEM THAT THE MAIN STREAM MEDIA IS IGNORING...

THE ILLINOIS STATE PENSION SYSTEM GOING BUST....
ILLINOIS STATE POSSIBLY GOING BANKRUPT....
THE MASS EXODUS of the upper class leaving ILLINOIS
To neighboring states...

Nah, just a tiny slowdown; may be a short-lived recession.

I agree. The world is always full of these short-term worries. This too will pass.

If you are just now thinking we are in a bad place you're a little late. We have been ridiculously in debt for way too long for the great and powerful nation that we are. And we keep on writing checks that can't be cashed. Only a fool would think that's going to last forever.

I'm surprised Mattis stayed on this long...if you read his resignation letter, it sure doesn't seem like Trump took his advice from day one...let's see who wants the job...

after so many years of relationship building, the world can survive a few years of peaceful discordant disruption...and so can the US...

My college economics professor asked me to leave class once because I disagreed with him when he said our deficit spending could go on indefinitely. That was like 40 years ago. So far he was right, but I agree with you.

The Stock Market jumped over 1,000 points today. The largest one day increase in it's history. Also December retail sales where higher than expected. Thank you former President Obama /s. The MSN told me that the past 2 weeks of financial woes where all on Trump. Of course today's jump and retail sales report are all due to Obama. I'm so glad we have the MSN to keep us straight on who gets the blame, and who gets the credit.

well, the 1,000 point bump was fun while it lasted...dropping some today...

the worse news for Trump is that he tried to do the right thing by visiting the troops in Iraq, posing for pictures with smiling soldiers far from home during the holidays...as POTUS are expected to do...

but this is Trump, who seems to botch a lot of his "good jobs" ...WH released photos of Trump posing with Navy Seals who are conducting covert ops in the ME...d'oh!

Well....it seems the cons here aren't gonna toot Trump's horn...why no mention of the landmark bipartisan Criminal Justice Reform Bill?...widely praised as a positive accomplishment, yet not one word from the right...

I'm not sure I'm finding the right news. I don't believe that has made it past the house yet...? I think it was passed in the Senate and is awaiting house approval (based on what I can find). Tiny hands hasn't had anything to do with it yet. I believe he has indicated he will sign, but we all know that is meaningless.

If he signs, then we can say good job?

I’ve heard good and bad things about it. So, I’m gonna wait for the particulars before commenting.

One concern I have stems from prossecutoral discretion. Many times prosecutors choose not to prosecute other related violence related crimes which may be more difficult cases if they can secure a conviction or a plea that amply punishes a criminal for all originaly charged crimes. By retroactively reducing sentences there is a good chance that some people will game the system.

That's a short term problem. But one might say that they are already gaming the system by doing that. When a prosecutor does that they are effectively punishing someone for a crime they don't necessarily believe they will have as good a chance getting a conviction for (ie, making an end run around the whole "jury of your peers" thing).

Perhaps we should be discouraging that?

Can be many reasons: 1) Witness protection, 2) Cost, 3) Outrageous cumulative sentence terms, etc...

I agree it can have it's value. But we should be considering that choosing to try someone for a lesser crime than they are accused of (or pleading to one) is essentially gaming the system itself.

Reform will allow those already in to game it as well, essentially a second time, but in the long run the prosecution will change the way they game the system going forward.

I don’t disagree. Just my way of saying the devil is in the details. On the other hand, there are a number of positive provisions. It will take time for the dust to settle before we really know if it’s a net positive.

no Jamie, the media has consistently shamed him for not visiting the troops stationed overseas in battlezones or properly marking the "memorial days" by visiting American armed services burial sites...and have done so for much longer than while his plane was in the air....

here's an article about this dated May 27...
