Yep, it was the same in my field. I always considered it a perk of my job to be able to meet and talk with people from places like that. To boot, made some pretty good friends at the time as well. I always looked forward to learning how different things actually was in comparison to what I "thought" was the real world. It did not take long to realise that things are not what we are told or taught or see on TV. Not to mention how willing all was to share education. That was when it really struck home that most folks tend to think the whole world is only comprised of what they can literally see or have been told. At the time that included myself. It was a huge eye opener for a boy born as a hillbilly redneck in South Carolina who was raised in the bible belt and was taught to be prejudice by my own parents and family. To be given that experience was life changing to say the least. The thing is the only way I feel one can gain such is to put aside the anger and stupidity long enough to sit and actually listen, talk, keeping an open mind, while allowing one another to think and feel differently.
The sad thing is, I feel people that have that ability are becoming less. To many now want to fight over a disagreement in thoughts and beliefs. To occupide with "sides" and "pointing fingers and passing blame" To willing to be carried up that argumentative ladder just because everyone else is willing to do the same.
I personally when confronted with such, as soon as I feel the discussion is becoming heated, the conversation is over on my end. Not because I feel strongly about my beliefs but because that person is not worth my time or anger to try and have the conversation. I refuse to be carried up the ladder and that was such a weight lifted.
Just my 0.02. As I say, It might not be right but, it's right for me.
