The question came to mind during an episode of Ozarks, where a character shares a parable on this differences.

Where I am from A redneck is a person that typically keeps a sunburnt neck. This came from working the fields and such on a farm all the time. Hillbilly is a person that lives or lived in the hills otherwise known as mountain folk. In most cases since I am from the blue ridge mountains, a redneck and hillbilly was the same as everyone lived in those hills and had farms.

Now of course the snowflake outsiders tend to use those terms as a derogatory term meaning from being ignorant or political affiliation which then in turn deserves a good jaw jacking. Any respectable redneck hillbilly wouldn't hesitate to jap slap any MF that meant it in the latter form.

I consider myself as both a redneck and a hillbilly since I lived in the hills and was on family owned farms for most of my life. So, Just my 0.02

Well Ewok I can't testify to the hillbilly part but from the vernacular I am totally convinced we are both in the brotherhood of rednecks. (and yes I do have a 4wd truck, no lift kit tho).

I'm probably more hillbilly than redneck.

But since I'm college educated, I prefer mountain William.

Well, let's see now...

You have Jeff Foxworthy.

And then you have Jed Clampett.

So, there's that.

Since I carry a good amount of Scotts Irish (Scotts who lived in Ulster, Ireland) blood, I'll let you in on a little story about how the term "Hillbilly" and "Redneck" came to be.

Many in Scotland during the 1600's where Covenant Reform Presbyterians who rejected the Church of England. They signed a Covenant declaring Presbyterianism as the religion of Scotland, against the English Crown. Many signed the Covenant in their own blood and wore a red cloth around their necks. Because of this, dissenting Scotts came to be known as "red necks". When England decided to put down the uprising, many fled to Ulster, Ireland, hence becoming known as the Ulster Scotts, or Scotts Irish.

These Scotts Irish where supporters of King William, also known as the "Prince of Orange". Because of this, native Irish referred to them as Billy Boys or Orange Men. When they mass migrated to the USA, many of them settled in the Appalachian mountains and foothills. Folk would refer to the "Billy Boys who lived in the hills", which was later shortened to "Hillbilly". So, "redneck" and "hillbilly" both referred to the Ulster Scotts who settled in Appalachia.

As a decendent of the Scotts Irish, I am thrilled to be moving to the Appalachia foothills. I will proudly wear the name "Hillbilly" and "Redneck" in the traditional sense. It's a shame that terms that once applied to strong, self reliant, independent folk are now considered derogatory by many.

I always thought Hillbilly was a term for poor folks living in the Appalachian Mountains.

Rednecks are outdoor working folks, i.e., farmers with suntanned necks.

Both are used as a derogatory terms. Regardless, in the throes of our current political correctness lunacy the most sensitive snowflakes and ignorant Northerners have no problem using these derogatory terms, bless their hearts.

Rednecks support Donald Trump.

Hillbillies don't vote.

I had a good friend in New York City
He never called me by my name, just Hillbilly
My grandpa taught me how to live off the land
And his taught him to be a businessman

He used to send me pictures of the Broadway nights
And I'd send him some homemade wine
But he was killed by a man with a switchblade knife
For forty-three dollars my friend lost his life

I'd love to spit some Beech-Nut in that dude's eyes
And shoot him with my old forty-five
'Cause a country boy can survive

Well sir, it is kind of hard to work in the great outdoors all day with a Nissan Altima or a Prius. 4x4 pickemup is pretty much a requirement. Now if you are a rich Redneck then you also have a massive 4 wheeler. Those with the lift kits on their 4x4 pickemup, well that is just the snowflake wannabes driving what we call a "street queen" which is a term that also infers that the owner of said lifted pickemup is a "Dumbass" and you sir are not! fog

Posed the same question to a guy born and raised in Northern Arkansas last night. After a couple sips of bourbon, he broke it down like this:

Rednecks:
-Sunburned necks.
-Four wheelers.
-Trucks bigger than their homes.
-Extroverted.

Hillbillies:
-Quiet.
-Resourceful.
-Trust not easily gained.
-Introverted.

Don't know too many hillbillies. Where I am from, it hard not to find a redneck.
