Ground here is all clay. At least under the muck it's clay.
Digging anything substantial by hand is impossible. If it's dry, you need a pickaxe. If it's wet, you can't get the scoop off your shovel. Even with a skidloader it's a PITA. Sticky but slippery, can't get traction and can't dump the bucket.
I need to move.
I put a few semi truck loads of black dirt down when I was rebuilding the house. Ended up being about a 6" layer over the front, side, and part of the back yard over the front two acres. Helped me grow grass after re grading the property, but most if not all of the black dirt has washed away over the last ten years.
