Meh. I guess it's all good but it rewards the most to those who used credit and penalizes those who used their own funds, worked part time jobs, etc to achieve their diplomas. There is something to be said for personal responsibility. I wonder which group will value their education the most.

"It’s 2019, and Americans are more burdened by student loan debt than ever.

Among the Class of 2018, 69% of college students took out student loans, and they graduated with an average debt of $29,800, including both private and federal debt. Meanwhile, 14% of their parents took out an average of $35,600 in federal Parent PLUS loans.

You’ve probably heard another scary statistic: Americans owe over $1.56 trillion in student loan debt, spread out among about 45 million borrowers. That’s about $521 billion more than the total U.S. credit card debt."

who are these personally responsible kids who earn that kind of money part time?
Are they hiring?

I agree, kinda, that it sends a dual message... but it is still a really cool thing he did.

getting a college education requires a lot of personal responsibility, however it is funded...college education in America costs more than in most other developed countries...and is another cause/symptom of wealth inequality in this country...(apologies...wrong forum)

cheers to Robert Smith!

I've heard that some kids had $150k+ in loans.

Probably for a degree in Visual Arts.

yeah. that's responsible...

Note: doesn't make Smith's gesture any less genuine.

I just attended my oldest daughter's graduation last weekend.
the university had given a degree to Oprah last November and she visited the campus at the end of last semester.
Oprah is a generous woman who has done a lot of good with her wealth.

But if one more speaker mentioned her name during my daughter's ceremony, I was going to start booing.
Profusely.
And it may come as a surprise to many, but I can be loud.

Saturday was about the class of 2019 attending the ceremony.
It wasn't about a celebrity who was gifted a degree and once visited during the school year.

Rant off.

If you saved up and paid your own way you have honor, hard work and something priceless that can never be replaced, if you didn't you have great luck (cha ching). What's the cliche - better to be lucky than good? And if you get a little of both better yet.

This is a win win. Hopefully they will pay it forward.

As an aside I just listened to an awesome interview of Carol Burnett by Howard Stern. She tells the story of a man she has never identified (at his request) who gave her $1000 to go to NYC and try to begin her career. It was a fairly random thing and someone she didn't know. That was huge money back then. His request was that she pay it back if she could within 5 years with zero interest. If she couldn't pay it back oh well. He also asked her to pay it forward which she did with scholarships and grants.

Thanks.
And she makes it look easy.
I'll fill everyone in on all her accolades if CBid gets bigger bandwidth to handle it.

HBCU's have always had a sprinkling of white students...about 10 years ago, or so, I remember a story about the first white valedictorian graduating from Morehouse...he was a Rhodes scholar, among many in the school's illustrious history, so Frank's choice to attend Morehouse isn't that unusual...

Kind of like the same way many black men choose white colleges to go to and play ball with scholarships. More notoriety. Helps them get up the ladder faster.

I think Obama didn't have a choice...just like some people didn't have a choice and could not to go to some colleges and universities even if they were qualified and wanted to, until not that long ago...I remember Gov Wallace blocking the door at the University of Alabama, to prevent the first black students from attending...

at the same time, HBCUs were letting white students attend...

Graduated with 70k debt. My fault for taking too long and accepting the maximum offered every semester. But still.... starting your adult life 70k in the hole, buying a house, getting married etc was not an ideal jump off point. I worked full time through school, but that was to pay rent and food and stuff. Had no extra money to be paying for school. If my girlfriend (now wife) hadn't bought me a car when I was commuting year round on a motorcycle, I don't think I could have finished.

I've almost paid them off, about a year to go. $700ish a month for 10 years as of this month.

5 more years I should be in a better spot. House and school paid for, then I can start fixing the major things that need fixin on the house. Or buy a nice camper and live there.
