Wife texted me as I was leaving work saying Milly dog chased a raccoon up a tree. She said she shot it twice with the pellet gun she uses to shoot squirrels off the bird feeders but it shrugged them off. Was bleeding from it's armpit, so probably got one decent hit.

Got home, dog came out to my truck and made sure I followed her. She took me out to the woods and it was still up in a tree, about 30ft up. I didn't have a good backstop tree where it was, so I wasn't comfortable shooting at it with the 38 on my hip. Went downstairs and got a 22 rifle. Threw two rounds of 22 short in it and went back out. Had a good angle with the trunk of a small oak as backstop and got a clean chest shot. Raccoon climbed higher but gave me a better angle. Meanwhile the dog is doing backdrops off the tree and the chicken fence. Took my second shot, clean chest hit. Can see the blood pouring out but the bastid won't fall. Had good backstop now so I shot it with my 38. Through and through, and the critter fell.

Puppy dog grabbed it by the neck and gave it a shake, dropped it and walked back to the deck to lay down.

She's so happy. When we were camping she was dying to get the raccoons but couldn't shoot em down from the trees. She finally got one and all is well.

Brushed the mutts and got a whole other dog's worth of fur off of them. Husky/shepherd and corgi/terrier both have stupid long and thick fluff. After swimming in lake Michigan they were both pretty dreadlocked and it took a while to fluff em back up

82/105 Went for a 4.5 mile hike in the preserve with the wifey. Lost 2 pounds and will be hydrating with cold beverages the rest of the day. Sweat works well in a dry climate, just makes you sticky in a humid one.

From more than 2 miles away, we could hear the Paul McCartney concert.

Even for a hardening, sometimes bitter, aging man, he moved me.

Baby, I'm amazed.

I took the wife to see McCartney a few years ago at Fenway Park, for her B-Day(she's a Beatles fan, and McCartney is her favorite)....It was a great show, we knew everything he played...the place was a giant sing-a-long. He played for better than 3 hours...I would definitely recommend seeing him live if you get the chance....Applause Applause Applause

I had a staph infection (or mrsa, not sure) in my nose. I had a swollen, red clown nose for a couple days. 2 antibiotic pills didn't phase it after 36 hours and they gave me a shot of some strong antibiotic and the next morning the swelling was down to almost nothing and the nose was just a bit pink, but still sore.

That sucked. Never had an infection like that.

Sitting on the deck grilling in the rain.

Good thing it's raining, the mud was almost dry enough to walk through.

New chickens haven't figured out rain yet. When it started they were jumping around and making a racket. Eventually got themselves back inside.

Pulling a HELOC this week. Gotta do roof/gutters and septic. 10 years of putting it off. Still owe 50k on the house but got 150k equity and I don't foresee a move anytime soon, might as well use it.

I wanted to wait till the house and student loans were paid off and just save up and pay cash but I don't think that's the best plan anymore. I've overused credit cards and paying 20% interest vs 7ish on a HELOC is a no brainer.

In the past I'd just hit up overtime at work but policy change makes that unbearable. I've lost about 20k/yr the last three years over the previous 7 since I quit signing up for OT. If you want overtime you go on call for any department in the hospital for that shift so you don't know where you'll be working, just that you'll be working in the most understaffed area of the hospital. Used to be able to just work your home unit, and if they didn't need you you'd stay home. But now if you're voluntary overtime they find a place for you to work. I don't want to work in other departments. If I did, I'd request a transfer.

Wife asked if I've ever tried Malört. I hadn't, but it was on a list of things to try. Her question was enough to send me out on a road trip to my old neighborhood on the Southside of Chicago. Haven't been there since 06 ish. But Malört is only available in Chicago.

Flooded with memories as I drove "home" . Took a picture of the house I rented, and the parking curb I cracked my skull on when I wrecked my motorcycle. Have no recollection of the happening, but I was working on getting it running and tuning the carb in the parking lot. Next thing I know I'm in the ICU at the hospital I now work at and they're telling me I've got a skull fracture and my brain is bleeding.

I was surprised at how emotional this liquor run became.

End of the story malört is terrible and you shouldn't drive to Chicago to try it.

LMAO!!! Malort might be the worst beverage I have ever tasted. It is interesting what can trigger memories. Also how memories can be bitter sweet.

If you crack a walnut and take the paper-y thing that sits between the two halves of nutmeat, crush it up and put it in vodka, you've got malört.

Wormwood liquor - what it actually is should be enough of a warning.
But I’ve had plenty of those shots during fantastic times.

Re: Malort. It is truly terrible. Danm was being kind. It actually tastes like a cross between regret and stale death.

Recently learned it was created by a Chitown cigar shop owner during prohibition. He'd sell it on the street in front of the shop. When the cops would come, he'd pour them a shot claiming the chit's medicinal. Upon tasting they'd leave him alone because no way anyone would drink for fun

Monday morning factoid brought to you by the letter M
