I came here to post Jon Stewart's speech, but Buckwheat beat me to it.

Jon's speech brought tears to my eyes.
Congress, (both Republicans and Democrats), should be ashamed of themselves for not showing up to this hearing and should be held accountable for their absence !
Like Jon, I do not understand why this doesn't have 100% support from BOTH parties !

this should be a no-brainer...mostly GOP members of the sub-committee failed to attend...absences were attributed to a full House vote that was scheduled at roughly the same time, on holding AG Barr in contempt...

Its not a no brained, this is not a government function. Sue the goddamn Saudis.......permanent? No.

The government officials who dereliction of duty allowed this and those who actually funded and carried it out should be dead.

worker's compensation calls for the employer/insurance to treat all in-the-line-of-duty injuries and illnesses...first responders to 9-1-1 were on the job...

probably in a different category than a house fire.
more like an act of war.

after looking into this, I have to agree with zrx...this is not about first responders injured while on duty...it is about compensating victims of the 9/11 attacks and their families, who agreed to participate in the fund instead of filing separate lawsuits against the airlines whose planes were used on 9/11...

I'm not smart enough to know why we, the collective tax-payers, were initially put on the hook for this, and apparently, will continue to pay...some of those killed were very highly paid investment bankers...how much is their life worth?

This is more of the same public deification of a certain class.

The establishment uses this technique to gain public support for taxes, war and otherwise unpopular laws.

I'm sorry but those First Responder's deserve every penny. How many died that day rushing into those buildings? They're hero's. These guys are just as dead as their brothers who died on that day it's just taking longer and they aren't getting the dignity of a quick death. Their families have to watch them waste away piece by piece. Can you imagine the number of funerals these guys have gone to in the past 18 years? A few billion dollars is nothing to our gov't. I wonder how much CASH the CIA has handed out to bribe local militias, warlords, and corrupt foreign gov't officials in the last 18 years.I watched a talk given by a CIA grs(protection agent) about how they all carried bags with at least 100k to 200k and up in cash so they could pay bribes on the spot, or buy weapons/vehicles and even aircraft if needed. All those tax payer dollars to pay the scum of the earth off and we can't take care of our own? Screw that!

No... let's sell them more guns and stuff. So they can give them to the people that carried out 911 in the first place. Sarcasm

You are so right.

The CIA HAS A MONETARY "BLACK BUDGET" THAT KNOWS N.O. BOUNDS OR LIMITS...

WHAT I LEARNED IN,THE very late 70's and all the 80's would boggle your mind...."CASH IS KING" was all ways the saying on the street and abroad...if you wanted anything done...especially illegal stuff...YOU HAD TO P.A.Y. BIG $$$ MONEY...mostly upfront...hell...sometimes the bastids would skip out before doing what they were bribed for already...hence came the
% payment schedule...FOR minor things like primary elections, arson, theft of anything, etc...
The BIG MISSIONS and Murder HITS were always upfront 100% cash in bags or suitcases....
I can only imagine what went on in Afghanistan and Iraq...
It had to be the WILD WEST with cash suitcases flying all over those countries daily, weekly...prolly a lot of faulty timothy gietner bad $100's ( from that massive warehouse in Dallas ? Ft. Worth? Or Huston? )being used so they could trace them easier once they circulated in those war zones...
Plus all of Saddams gold stashes all over Iraq...
Watch "three kings" ? With George Clooney...it is right on target.

Was complaining about this same problem not too long ago.

Happens all too often. Might not be quite so bad, if committees met in the Capitol -- run down, vote, and come back. But most committees meet in the surrounding House and Senate buildings. I'd like to know if they've examined local-remote voting? I don't want reps voting from back in their home states, or Iowa or something...but if they're actually working in the Russel, or Rayburn Buildings, perhaps they should be able to vote quick from there without having to leave and go to the Floor

If I'm not mistaken, the bill being debated is for "Victims of 9/11". This includes people inside and around the WTC, the Pentagon, and the airplane that crashed in Pennsylvania, who were killed and hurt by the terrorist attacks.

It does not include the first responders, who are covered by Workers Comp., and who deserve every penny of their post 9/11 death and medical benefits.

The victims were mostly private citizens...why should all of us pay their families' survivor benefits (based on the deceased's expected lifetime earnings) or the medical bills of those who survived but have expensive health issues?

does it cover/consider the first responders victims as well?
are they covered by this bill?

Obama signed a bill in 2011 to expand coverage to first responders, mostly volunteers who went to help while off duty...
