Bidding Process Question

I've spent thousands through CigarBid over the past ten or so years, and had an unusual experience over the past week.

I placed a maximum bid on a box five days before closing, and was the only bidder. Several days later, and was curious, and saw I was still the only bidder, but my bid was automatically increased moderately, even though there were no competing offers. No big deal.

After the bidding closed, I saw I was still the only bidder, but my bid was increased to my maximum, for no apparent reason. In that there are no minimums, and a single bidder, I'm wondering how this could happen.

I inquired to customer service three days ago, but I've received no response.

Have any of you had a similar experience?

1. If you want customer service, call Customer Service....if you just want to say that you inquired to customer service, go ahead and message or email them....it has never been a satisfactory way to get anything done

2. The new bots will robo-bid up to close to your max bid - or sometimes just right at it. Thanks for keeping the lights on.

3. What color is your membership card?

If you bid $200 max bid and $100 starting bid it will move up over any bid I place unless I bid $201.......then I win, like I always do.

was it a quantity of one available unit?
if so, anyone else bidding over you but under your max would drive up your auto-bid but they would be deleted from the current winning bidder list...only need one name if there's only one unit.

It was a single unit, and from beginning to end, it showed "1 Bidder". Seems other offers would show as additional bidders. I got my smokes for a good deal, but felt a little uneasy how the process worked. I'm underwhelmed with customer service not responding to my written inquiry. Life goes on....

What you experienced sounds like a shadow-bid. It’s a tactic used by bots to seek out weak bidders.

Don't be. They have met expectations exactly.

Call them if you care about a reply.

Rejections are not considered in the bid total. Bids have to be successful to count towards the bid total.

A little late, but, I also replied to your message. Our apologies on the delay. Summer is here and it is booming. Herfing

no, you were supposed to ask where he has been and that you and his mother were terribly worried about him and that strange disease he had.

There's something fishy about this guy.

You’re bloody full of it, TamponMan!

You’re just trying to get them to send a free box, no strings attached.
I can almost see your sideways smile.
Ain’t happenin. Not this month. Not ever!

You’re used up. Period.

When you bid X dollars up to a max of Y dollars, other bidders may take a run at you and it never shows, except in the higher price. For example, if you bid $5 for a fiver of Dog Rocket Maduros, with a max bid of $40, plan on paying the $40. Bidders don't know your max until and unless they top it. Someone may come along and bid $20, for example, and come up short of your $40 max. Then your bid is $20, not $5 or $40. Happened to me a bunch over the years. And if you're wondering if it's just Cbid running up your total, while it's theoretically possible, I've never seen it happen. There have been many times (more than I can count) where I won a lot without reaching my max. Conversely, I've taken a run at many lots where my comfort level was below whatever max someone else bid and I saw their bid increase to the max I had bid.

Only two ways to avoid this: one is to never bid. The other is to bid a flat rate and leave it. Otherwise, business and bidding as usual, and as designed.
