Conservatives remember. Not about to guess at what Trump may or might understand.

Out of many...One. Thirteen colonies became one country. In fact, recent displays of the flag representing exactly that were decried as.....wait....RACIST!!

Seems like immigrants today are not necessarily intent on assimilation. So there goes the "one" part of the equation unless we want to adapt their beliefs and cultures.

I was thinking about Trumps comments about Elijah Cummings and Baltimore.

During the beginnings of the civil rights movement Elijah Cummings stood tall, he was no pretender. He deserves our respect. Also the people of Baltimore deserve our respect. They are Americans.

Yet Trump disparages and the elected Republicans say nothing. I'm tired of crickets when it comes to Trumps disparagement of Americans who disagrees with him. I'm tired of his disparagement of American cities that aren't on his A list. I am tired of his disparagement of Americans who are different than him. Don't any of them have a back bone? Won't any of them say enough?

Been a peeve of mine for some time. I've posted here about it. If you suggest anyone assimilate, then you are racist, or at the very least disrespectful of other cultures.
We keep getting it pounded into our heads, that 'diversity is our strength' and little regard left for the 'one'...or unity

Spey, I'm surprised that you find Trump offensive.

Trump is like an idiot. He is unpresidential and I gag a little every time he tweets. And while I won't defend him for saying stupid stuff, I don't recall him saying anything about Cummings...or Baltimore that I disagree with. When I drive anywhere in Baltimore other than inner harbor, I reflexively make sure the doors are locked and I roll up the windows....vast majority of the city is downright scary just to drive through

Having thought about it for another five full minutes....I do disagree with some of it.

I wouldn't put much, if any blame on Cummings directly. He's been here in Washington for more than a couple decades.

I have a philosophical difference of opinion with those who think that Congressmen and women are sent to Washington to 'support' their districts. Represent their constituents, of course. But too many in the Capitol are more beholden to their districts or their states than they are to the nation. I have always felt that their first consideration should always be 'what's best for the country'...not 'what's best for my district' -- so, if I don't want Cummings working specifically for Baltimore and Howard County, I won't blame him for the decrepit condition they're in. The last few Baltimore mayors, however....they don't get the same pass

dstieg.... you're falling into what I would call a pretty common myth in america among conservatives.

You'd see it very clearly from some of our more rabid members... every city is a sh#thole, you're going to get hep walking on the streets etc... it's sort of an over-ripe version of the "white flight" from the 80s. I suspect it's the same people, just older.

Baltimore isn't bad. I walked through the worst areas of b'more late at night back in the 90s. I had a friend from florida who always would lock his car door whenever we would drive through certain neighborhoods, and I honestly thought he was being paranoid. I would ask him why the hell he was locking his doors, and tell him I thought it was ridiculous to think anything was going to happen.

Anyway... Is it great? No. But identifying cities like Baltimore or Detroit as somehow the worst parts of the US, is frankly... wrong. I was just talking to a pharmacist last weekend who went to school in the virginia/west virginia area, and he would describe these rural dr events he would participate in where people from deep appalachia would see the dr for the first time in a year or so... What he would describe seeing sounded much more like a third world country than anything in Baltimore... Yet certain politicians want to focus on cities.... especially the ones with a high population of people they don't like. .

The reality really is much less extreme than the politicians talking about it want you to think.

And I lived there for 4 years.... before it became gentrified.

I'm not telling you it's super safe, or that every aspect of the city is safe. I'm telling you there are a LOT of different types of crappy, dangerous, 3rd world level parts of america. It's interesting to me that the ones that are always mentioned are the cities...

Hell... the only time I've been close to a shooting is in columbia MO. After years of living in SF, Baltimore, DC...

Last 4 Baltimore mayors (all Democratic, of course):

Sheila Dixon - resigned after fraud, embezzlement, theft charges (and one or more convictions?)
Stephanie Rawlings-Blake - Riots on her watch, along with charges that she was not responsive to the riots
Catherine E. Pugh - resigned after it came out that she was taking bribes disguised as 'book sales'
Jack Young - only been a few months...he's got time

Yeah.... and I'm sure if we pulled random small-town mayors we could find similar nonsense. What was that sheriff somewhere pocketing $$ meant to feed prisoners? (all perfectly legal)....

I'm not trying to "whatabout" any of this crap. I'm simply saying that people have an interesting preconception about cities like baltimore which they don't apply to the rest of the US. trumpenfurher has just been the most recent and visible.

Ironically, he blamed b'more being a sh#thole on the president back when Obama was the president. It's convenient that it's totally not the president's responsibility now.

And more amusing, he doesn't mention DC at all and take responsibility for that city... I remember in both cities seeing huge moving swarms of cockroaches on the sidewalks during some times of the year... probably the president's fault (eyeroll)

so you're saying his attack has nothing to do with the quality of life there, but rather his political opponents.

...

....

he's disparaging a city full of US citizens because he wants to score political points.

yeah... he's a real uniter.

Elijah is a corrupt politician who has made Baltimore a beautiful city and very safe! Stay on the plantation and make everything about race? It’s about the corrupt politicians who run every major city in America!! Open your eyes! Only the liberals and the media make it about race instead of fixing the problems!

Greggy, glad you personally know Cummings is corrupt and are informing us. Personally, I can't find even a whisper of corruption. Oh wait, little hands says so, so it must be true because he only lies about 3 times a minute.

I'd like to see things from your point of view but I can't seem to get my head that far up my azz.
