Just got a box delivered today... Still a huge fan... Haven't looked at ratings or reviews, but I'm confident it'll end up high on the list...

From halfwheel:

https://halfwheel.com/my-father-la-promesa-lancero/368854/amp/

Final Notes

If someone provided the tobaccos, i.e. the blend was going to be the same, but I got to pick a factory to make lanceros for a cigar brand, it would be My Father Cigars S.A. In my years of smoking just about every lancero on the market, I don’t think there is a factory that has excelled as consistently as My Father. No factory, not even My Father is perfect, which is what has made the few disappointments even more disappointing, but the La Promesa is another in a long list of lanceros that have been rolled well at a factory owned by the Garcías.
Given the darker wrapper and the smells coming from the cigar prior to being lit, I think many people will find this cigar to be less powerful nicotine-wise than expected.

I definitely think this cigar is going to change a year from now, I’ve already got one saved to see what that’s like. If I’m forecasting, the dominant flavors that take over the second and final thirds are likely to change in some way. It’s a feeling, maybe an educated guess, but I’ll test the theory this time next year.

I feel like I have a pretty good grasp on what’s happening in the cigar industry, but the My Father Cigars, Inc. portfolio has gotten to be a bit out of hand. I bought the wrong cigars—La Gran Oferta—originally for this review.

For those wondering, I much prefer the La Promesa to the La Gran Oferta.

Credit to My Father for using the proper, or close to it, lancero size: 7 1/2 x 38. Technically, the Cuban size is 192mm, which is just over 7 1/2 x 38, but I always appreciate when the vitola doesn’t end up as a 7 x 40.
For those who are unfamiliar, at TheCigarFeed, my blog before halfwheel, I once reviewed 50 lanceros in 50 days.
My Father’s packaging, while a bit gaudy at times, remains some of the best in the business in terms of execution. I really like the shade of teal used for the La Promesa text.

My favorite My Father-made lancero is the original Serie JJ. The El Centurion Lancero is also one of the better lanceros I’ve ever smoked.
Cigars for this review were purchased by halfwheel.
Final smoking time was two hours and 20 minutes on average.
Site sponsors Atlantic Cigar Co., Famous Smoke Shop and JR Cigar carry the My Father La Promesa Lancero.

91 Overall Score

The My Father La Promesa Lancero is the best new lancero I’ve smoked this year, though, it’s also the only new lancero I can recall smoking this year. That aside, I can tell you that I think it’s a worthy addition to the large family of My Father cigars on the market. Compared to the My Father No. 4, the La Promesa has fewer flavors and is oftentimes just dominated by a single one of those flavors. However, while it may be less complex, in many ways it is the more flavorful of those two cigars. Regardless, it’s one of the better lanceros you will find for the $10 or under price point.

can't find the lanceros, but got 5ers of the robusto and toro, and they are good. I also got the La Opulencia in the same sizes, and they are good too.

Can you PM the source of the lanceros, Opel?

Speaking of excellent lanceros, the "sister site" currently (as of me typing this) has the Southern Draw Jacob's Ladder Lancero on sale for $79.99 for 20, with free shipping too.

$4 each, shipped, for those potent, delicious AJ-blended/rolled sticks? YES PLEASE!

UPDATE: Make that $3 each (see my post below this one).

Not sure why, have not been able to convince myself to smoke a southern draw... I've heard they are great, but I hate the name and the cigars themselves use some of the ugliest, turdiest looking wrappers I've seen... Especially the Jacobs ladder...

We're not allowed to mention other retailers on this forum. However, ask yourself, what object do we all like to smoke? Now make it singular not plural, no "s" on the end. Now slap ".com" on the end.

Oh, and did I say $4 each free shipped? I meant $3. Just got an email from them saying promo code "TAKE20" cuts $20 off your bill and adds free shipping, so $79.99 becomes $59.99. Naturally I bought several more 20-packs upon hearing that!

The code can be used more than once per customer, too, because I just used it multiple times in a row! (The best strategy of course is to put each bundle in its own separate order, so you get $20 off each one, NOT just $20 off all of them combined).

The phrase "back up the truck" comes to mind. Time to load up on these suckers.

They are indeed really good. Top-notch AJ Fernandez-made product, no corners cut. Look past the stupid name, you'll be happy you did.

Finally smoked a MF La Promesa and it seemed like it had potential to be a great smoke but for me it had a distinct charred wood flavor in the first half that developed into a faint ammonia taste in the 2nd half. Maybe needed more rest?

for Connecticut wrapped cigars I would pick AJ Fernandez La Gran Llave, however AJ's Southern Draw Rose of Sharon 5.5" x 54 Robusto beats it out as an awesome high mild smoke.

And for darkies I loved Diesel Whiskey Row Sherry Cask and Enclave Broadleaf!

Is the TAKE20 code still working for you guys? I'm trying to use it and it says its invalid or expired. I want to jump on this deal but all said and done they want almost 95$.... too much to drop on a box iv'e never tried before.

TAKE20 is dead, it died at midnight tonight, about 2 hours ago as I type this.

The $20 off and free shipping on orders over $49 are both gone.

So instead of $59.99 with freeship, they'll now charge you $79.99 plus a hefty shipping charge (9 bucks if I recall right), plus tax of course.

They sent out an email indicating the sale's going bye-bye soon too, whereupon the price will revert to about $184, similar to the price of every other retailer on the Internet for these sticks.

I hope most of you guys got your fill while the getting was good! It lasted over 2.5 days, but it had to end eventually!

Well, I got my shipments of the Southern Draw Jacob's Ladder lancero and tried one ROTT (Right Off The Truck).

In the YouTube reviews and photos I've seen of the boxes (which weren't included in this bundle deal), the box reads "DOUBLE LIGERO", and boy I believe it. These are very potent, extremely full-bodied. I'm not a good judge of strength because I have a very high nic tolerance so it's hard for me to tell, but I can judge body, and wow, these are full of it.

If you're an experienced, heavy-duty retrohaler you'll love this as the pepper and the heavy, thick, dense feeling of high-body are potent as heck through the nose for the entire length of the cigar.

Construction and burn are top-notch as you'd expect in a cigar with a $9-10 each street price, and in particular a high-end AJ creation.

Lancero lovers, and lovers of very strong body, will simply adore these.

For $3 each shipped free, an utter and complete steal of a deal.

Best part is, their potential for improving with age seems very, very high to me. I have had similar AJ cigars in the past (but with even less body) and 5 years of age did magical things to them. If you bought a lot of them like I did, and you're willing to experiment, bury them (or at least some of them) and forget about them for a few years minimum, if you can!

So I had a CG La Promesa last night, very good cigar. No Pepin pepper kick at light, good balance of walnut raisin and cedar. Transitioned to having a sourdough note halfway through and the strength picked up the last third. The last third wasn’t my favorite part but it is a very good cigar. If you like Pepin and not stronger this is your lane right here IMO.

I herd about the sale, then ruminated about how many units to buy.

When they arrived, I hoofed it over to my mailbox and they were steering me in the face.

I was in the mooooood to try one, and my cutter slipped and I nearly butchered the cap!

Upon lighting, it was so potent and strong I nearly fell over, which would make me ground beef!

There was so much nicotine I had muscle twitches, it turned me into beef jerky!

It reminded me of another strong cigar I'd had, so I got a feeling of deja-moo.

It was so strong, instead of normal coffee I had to pair it with de-calf.

I smoked it down to the nub to milk it for all it was worth!

Then I went to bed because my smartwatch said, "It's pasture bedtime!"

Glad you guys enjoyed the review. Share yours, too! It's important that we all help each udder!

Sometimes cellophane mazos are lesser quality than the boxed cigars. Sometimes they're the same quality, just without the box, typically intended for retailers who want to just keep refilling the one box they have, instead of pointlessly acquiring lots of extra boxes.

After examining and smoking one of these mazo-packed cigars, I can tell you with high confidence that these are the latter, not the former. It seems Southern Draw doesn't play games with their mazos.

It was a great stick with perfect construction, draw and excellent flavors. I can't imagine the boxed version being any better.

And yeah, internet prices are $170-180-ish, or apparently $150 sometimes according to this report. At $60 free shipped, wow.

While the promo code TAKE20 for $20 off and free shipping on orders $49+ (which allowed $60 with free shipping) is now dead, they're still selling them at $79.99 and they offer free shipping on orders $125+. So if you get 2 mazos, that's $4 a stick shipped free, which is still very good. On their homepage, there's a big rotating image thing, and one of them is "Cyber Monday Mayhem sale". Click on that, and it's in the resulting list of items.

For you ligero-heads and extra-full-body lovers who didn't get in on the Southern Draw deal, there's sort of a consolation prize: RP Super Ligero 5x50 boxes for $64.99 with free shipping. It's under their "Daily Cigar Deal", presumably for today only.

Yeah yeah I know, most Rockys suck nowadays, but at least as of the last time I bought, these were great. I got a box about a year ago, and 5-packs about 6 months ago. Both were identical quality (the 5-packs weren't inferior) and quite tasty, well-made and very potent and extra full-bodied. Not the most complex cigar in the world, but plenty good nonetheless, and an ass-kicker in body. I'd recommend them at this box price of $65 if you like ligero bombs, assuming he hasn't dumbed them down since I last got mine.

for my money, pretty hard to beat the Illusione HL for lanceros...the Trinidad Fundadore is better, but much more expensive...Partagas Culebras are up there too...

MF #4 were great about five-six years ago, but seemed to have slipped...

L'Atelier de la Racine 2015 were outstanding but are long gone...

but a year ago, I would've totally agreed with you... the company seems to have taken a weird turn... I think whoever runs their twitter account might be on acid...

Years ago, Illusione was top notch.
Now? Still good, but it seems like their portfolio quadrupled in size, or more, in less that 2 years.
Did I miss something?
That sort of increase rarely comes with the ability to maintain top quality imo.

Since talking about the lancero, here is a cheap option. They are sold out right now, but the Habano Nicaraguan Overruns 7.5x38 Lancero at the Tenskie place is a darn fine smoke for $2 including shipping. If you are a lancero fan and ever see these back in stock, you should give them a try.

Back to the OP (kind-of...) I had the La Promisa in the Robusto Grande size at a cigar bar last week, Very nice smoke, lasted forever, but I can see how the lancero could be better. At times the cigar smoked a bit "dry" and flavor faded a bit.

Still for only $12 at a cigar bar for almost 2 hours of smoking time, well worth it.
