“I earned my spurs on the battlefield,” he said at a charity gala in New York on Thursday night. “Donald Trump earned his spurs in a letter from a doctor.”

Ten months after Mattis resigned in protest, Trump described his former secretary of defense as “the world’s most overrated general” and “not tough enough” during a meeting with congressional leaders on Wednesday afternoon.

In a speech disguised as self-deprecating comedy at the annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, the retired four-star Marine general made light of this. “I’m not just an overrated general. I am the greatest, the world’s most overrated,” he quipped. “I’m honored to be considered that by Donald Trump because he also called Meryl Streep an overrated actress. So I guess I’m the Meryl Streep of generals. And, frankly, that sounds pretty good to me. … You do have to admit: Between me and Meryl, at least we’ve had some victories.”

when will we see Trump's best generals? He said he knew all the best generals...

wonder which general suggested pulling out of northern Syria, abandoning the Kurds and setting off an unnecessary catastrophe?

... while sending a few thousand troops to Saudi Arabia, who will pay us to protect them?

handing Putin a strategic advantage to exert more influence in the ME

and reviving ISIS terrorists by giving them back some of their old stomping grounds

pretty sure this was not Mad Dog's idea...maybe Flynn, who was a Turkish agent, or Gen Giuliani?

Don't agree with abandoning the Kurds but I'm glad to see the Ruskies are now in that snake pit instead of our guys.

no...Mattis is seeing this move like most people, including GOP leaders like Graham and McConnell...

it's not the end objective that is faulty... it was the lack of strategery in the execution...

Always liked Mattis. Not sure why it’s odd to see him receive praise.

Typically revered military personnel are above throwing jabs at their former boss...

Despite my age, I've had the pleasure and displeasure of hiring and firing my share of people... I can tell you right now, anyone who bad mouthed their past employers never made it to a second interview... It's one of the worst qualities a human being can display...

if that's the general rule, there is now a huge, and growing, number of unemployable former employees of the Trump administration wandering the streets after reporting the bad things that happened when they were there, kinda like Trump zombies...

few companies/organizations are rotten to the core, but many otherwise great organizations have awful people in positions of authority...we should separate specific people in positions of authority from the organization as a whole...

a corollary of Opel's rule prohibiting running down a former employer...an employer should not be so bad that if a person is known to have worked there, that person will be unemployable henceforth...

he was light heartedly responding to a humorless trashing of him by said former boss...

Certainly not saying he gets a pass... Just hate to see anyone claiming any of that "when they go low" bs if they're snickering at this crap...

You can't claim to go high and then punch down a few times because it feels justified...

he's not Michelle.
and he used humor even though he did not deserve to be broadsided as he was by a childish person desperate to improve his own ratings at the expense of a dedicated servant of America.

And for the record while both are high my expectations are higher for a sitting president than for that of a retired general. Interesting to see vice versa.

Really? Obama was an arrogant sh*tbag compared to the generals... Junior was a moron.... clinton was an undisciplined j*ckoff... I'm not old enough to ga back further...

the difference between the positions: one earned it, the other won a popularity contest... you should adjust the expectations you have for the popular kid...

I get what you're saying... when I compare the two - SNL style jokes clearly written by someone else vs "I have no comment" - one smacks of the class you'd expect of a military man and the other smells like pandering...

Nope. First of all even if I reversed my expectations what Mattis said pales in comparison to what trump says almost every day.

Secondly yes I do expect more from the leader of the free world. Sorry.

Obama’s arrogance aside I don’t remember him smearing his ex employees and coming up with names to call folks.

I don’t buy that this is me old normal and hope it’s not the new normal.

It’s amazing the pass you are willing to give trump. I’m not willing to give him, the presidents before him or future presidents that pass.

By the way if you do happen to find an example where bammy smeared an ex employee it would t change my mind and my next request would be frequency related Kenneth.

yah, totally false equivalence in comparing POTUSes (POTI?) to Trump, who has established a whole new level of abnormal conduct in the Oval Office...we should all hope this level does not become the new normal...comparing Jr. in the same light as Trump does a huge disservice to Jr....

is Mattis an anomaly among military leaders critical of Trump? NO...he joins a large and decorated club...
