Tony Fernandez, a five-time All-Star and a World Series champion shortstop, died Sunday after a battle with kidney disease. He was 57.

Fernandez played 17 seasons in the majors for the Toronto Blue Jays, San Diego Padres, New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians and Milwaukee Brewers. He played 12 years with the Blue Jays on four separate stints and was on their 1993 World Series-winning team.

Fernandez finished his career as the Blue Jays’ career leader in hits with 1,583, triples with 72 and games played with 1,450.

He finished with 2,276 career hits with a .288 batting average and a .746 OPS. He also had four Gold Gloves.

he was soooo good. Legit All-Star caliber player, super smooth, unique throwing motion...

I think in retirement he became a minister of one kind or another.

Very smooth shortstop - not Ozzie, but pretty darn close.
