Aging And CigarBid Cigars

I'm kinda new at this, so please be kind.

It is my understanding that cigars purchased from reputable local cigars stores have been properly aged and they can be smoked immediately.

What about cigars bought on CigarBid? Can they be smoked immediately, or do they need to be aged?

Thanks.

Just wait until the Commie13 get a hold of you!

Now, as to your questions.............yes and no.
Just because you’re buying a cigar from a brick and mortar shop doesn’t guarantee it has been “aged” properly.
The shop owner might have got them in 2 days ago, and 90% of them will happily sell it to you.

Anything you buy online? Could be fresh off the boat, or years old.......just depends.
In any case, let anything that has come to you via mail, UPS, etc, rest them a week for every day of transport (unless it’s humidified transport)........maybe freeze it too if you like.

Well, well, well.

All my cigars go in the freezer for 3 days, the refrigerator for 1, then (and only then) into the humidor. Once there I let them sit at least 2 weeks to acclimate and stabilize. Then if it's something I'm dying to try I'll fire one up.

Most cigars are shipped over humidified and only the great cigar lord knows what happened to them en-route.

As a side note...in 20 years of getting cigars here,I have never frozen them...never had a single beetle. I have also smoked many mere days after receiving a shipment and can count on one hand the total issues I have ever experienced from here.

The only place I have ever had to deal with over humidified cigars was from junior's place.

Welcome to cbid bud, is that mighty 1, or mite1, for your handle? Either way, watch out for the silver backs around here. They get grumpy. 🤣😂🤣 Other than that, enjoy the forum and may the best bidder win!

Only time I got beetles was from a noob trade thread on another forum. The cigars were absolutely destroyed by the bugs, carelessly thrown in a bubble wrap envelope to mail, and they went directly into the burn pile. Sender got a ban after I shared pictures.

Otherwise, I typically wait a month or so to try anything. Just toss in my humidor and let em acclimate to my preferences. Shpo or online, same game. Actually my shpo tends to be much wetter than what I get from cbid. Depends on foot traffic though. Top row of some boxes on a winter weekend with heavy traffic in/out of the walk in can be nearly smokable

Never had them. When I got here Ron and a couple of the others told me about it, explained why, and I just figure it's painless insurance to never have to worry about it. If I were low on smokes I'd pull a couple to get me through and go. But what ever floats your boat.

I have found though that when I get excited and try one ROTT, I almost always end up with burn issues I don't have after a couple of weeks in the humi. That's been my experience.

Free advice, take it for what it's worth. Beer

As a general rule of thumb I let everything age for at least a month.

Thanks for the warning.Herfing

Loosely translated "Ponderosa", as in Ponderosa Pine Tree, means mighty one. I thought that was pretty cool so I took it as my handle.

Now that I think about it, I learned that in a movie about Che Guevara, who was a definite cigar afficionado.

So I'm guessing the reason some people put their Cigarbid cigars in the freezer for a few days is to kill the beetle larva.

Is this correct?

Thanks.

I thought Ponderosa meant can't afford to go to a real steakhouse

That is correct. But I do all cigars before they go in the humidor. It's just peace of mind.

You may never have a problem, but I would hate to open that door full of good cigars and have one buzzing around. Now you're speed freezing all of them. And having a mild panic attack. Frying pan

Bonanza was a great steakhouse. At least during the pre-crack pre-AIDS 1980's.

eggs.

if you have larvae in there, you're already too late.

And it takes considerably longer than 2-3 days in a residential freezer to render the eggs non-viable.

I miss both of those buffets, but I really don't need to overeat any more. I still do Chinese buffets tho.

I’m a 3-4-3 guy.

Is there a length of time that would work?

The refrigerator steps don't really gain you much of anything. It's not really cold enough to damage the eggs and tobacco has a very low moisture content compared to other commonly frozen items, it's not like it needs the long cool down.

Home freezers cycle up and down in temp continuously. They also tend to be uneven, some areas are colder, some are warmer. Ideally, make the calculation based on the warmest spot in the freezer, with accounting for the extra time needed for the insulating factor provided by the box and the cigars in a bundle so that one is basing the time on the center cigars in a bundle or box. IMO and based on a few simple tests I ran, I would say that anything less than 5-6 days in the freezer is not sufficient.

For me I found that straight to the freezer for about 8-10 days works. A few extra days don't hurt things and just give you a larger margin of safety. Come out of the freezer to atmospheric long enough for the excess condensation to evaporate and it's done.

Passed around some cigars at a herf once, all originally from the same box, some were right out of a 10 day freeze, some were week or two out of a freeze, the others were never frozen. No one could tell the difference in flavor.

I've even accidentally left stuff in the freezer for longer, a lot longer, about a month actually. It was fine. Note though, that they were still in the vendor applied heat sealed plastic bags.

Commerical units are a whole different story.

IIRC, a larger ones that can hold -20F without fluctuating, you're looking at a day. Of course, I'd say add some extra time, but, yeah, it's fast. You're mainly waiting for it to cool down at the center of the bundle.

Cubatobacco and a number of NC manufacturers, even some distributors use blast freezers that go down to like -40F, even lower in some cases, they'll hold them there for 2-3 days, but they are freezing stacks of pallets of master cases.

I did a similar thing with various Fuente maduros and OX but didn’t necessarily have a 10 year mark in mind. Should try that with my Cubans too.

As the Jamaican folks told Mrs. Beach and I when we traveled there for our 10th anniversary, "10 years!?!?! That's a long time! We don't do that here"

Listen to this man. He knows his chit from Shinola. fog

I'm an advocate for aging all cigars. I aged all of mine @ ~60%-65% RH and at ~60-65F. It helped that my basement was pretty cool so there wasn't a need for extra AC. fog
