The major news websites just said that orange president tiny hands referred to COVID-19 by a "racist name"...

I figured they were just overreacting and he had just called it the "chinese virus" or something similar.

But he literally called it the "kung flu" at his rally.

jesus f-cking christ they aren't even trying to hide what terrible racist sh$ts they are anymore.

Rfenst... it's on the level of having 70s kung fu music play every time Delta enters a room. It can be funny, if done by a skilled comedian. Anything can be funny if done right.

When said by the president of the united states at a rally for his base of racists.... the humor drains from it really quickly

what's really "funny" is how many Americans of Asian ancestry who were born in the United States of America, and have no real connection to China, other than parents or other ancestors, and many other Asian-Americans of other nationalities who don't even have Chinese ancestry but just look like kung flu, are being targeted by Trump supporters who are looking for somebody to blame...

these victims of hate crimes incited by the POTUS' rhetoric are every bit as American as he is, and just illustrates the level of racism that continues to exist in the US, and that he intentionally exploits, despite his denials...

picking up on victor's point, I remember the first Japanese player in Major League baseball, Hasanori Murakami, who pitched for the San Francisco Giants in the 60's...the organist at Dodger Stadium played "Sukiyaki" a Japanese pop tune that made the charts in the US every time he entered a game...funny, but I wasn't as racially sensitive then...

wonder why nobody played Oh Danny Boy when Mike McCormick pitched?

I mean.... like most attempts at race-oriented humor it could go either way.

Could it make delta 1000% more badass? Yeah.
But the riff is apparently western created and was intended to say "here's the Chinese guy!" in a non-flattering way. So it can also be pretty insulting.

this is the real deal...the oriental riff...

it is used in many forms of entertainment to signal the entry of an Asian character...

Yep. I think I read that it was made up in late 1800s/early 1900s for them to introduce the "oriental" character... generally at a time when Asian Americans were not very popular.

He's doubled down on it today....
In his speech today he said:
"coronavirus has many names, such as 'Wuhan' and 'coronavirus'"; when someone in the audience yelled out "Kung Flu", Trump says, "Kung flu, yes. Kung flu."
Apparently he then continued with: "some people" can't figure out what the "19" in COVID-19 is for. "I said, that's an odd name,"
"Some people call it the Chinese flu. The China flu. Right? They call it the Chi-NA, as opposed to China. The Chi-NA."

He then had the gall to say:"We embrace the noble vision of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and believe that people should not be judged based on the color of their skin but the content of their character"

Al enlighten me please,I have not heard of any Trump supporters attacking Asian Americans. Most Trump supporters I know are trying to buy "Made in USA" first,"made anywhere but China" next.May I add "**** China" is our war cry.

Please list these Asian American hate crime victims.

I was actually watching a news program on TV ...female Asian news reporter was reporting at a crowded beach in Georgia about masks, social distancing, stay at home orders and the pandemic...some yahoo walked by behind her and yelled, "Go back to China!"

here's a story in USA Today:

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2020/05/20/coronavirus-hate-crimes-against-asian-americans-continue-rise/5212123002/

I was born here in the US, in Los Angeles, to parents who immigrated from China before WWII. My father fought in the USAF during the War...growing up, he drove me by several shops that we were not allowed in, and several neighborhoods where we were not allowed to buy houses...

I've endured my share of hate crimes and discrimination, including being told to "go back where you came from" many times, having rocks and oranges thrown at me, being called Nip, **** and Jap in grade school...even as late as 1980-81, after my wife and I got married, we tried renting an apartment at two places in all-white parts of her hometown, and were told they had no vacancies...when I called a few days later, the manager offered to show me the apt, not realizing she had told me "no" ...I've even been told to leave by members here...

don't get me wrong, I love living here, and think America is the greatest nation in the world...I've been welcomed into very close circles in my law enforcement career, and treated as an equal...but we could be better matches to the ideals that form our foundation

The adage "we are all in this together" comes to mind - only because it's such BS. Another thing that comes to mind is the old Charlie Chan movies that I have seen (Charlie Chan portrayed by non Chinese actors). How do you feel about them Delta ?
I had a Chinese roomate (from Hong Kong) in college. I thought he was cheap and he thought I was crazy and I think we were both somewhat correct.

pretty sure that I still have the vinyl 45 rpm Sukiyaki.
as I recall, the name sukiyaki was simply a convenience to market the song by using an "oriental" name Americans could recognize.
May or may not look it up but I think the real lyrics were kind of a sad tale of walking along through nature thinking about a love lost.
Actually a beautiful tune...victimized by marketing.

Two federally-run Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals during the Obama administration used the term "Kung Flu" in official materials, along with imagery of a monkey in a karate suit and a ninja wearing a flu mask, Fox News has learned.

President Trump's use of the term “Kung Flu” to refer to the coronavirus has drawn accusations of racism and insensitivity, but the use of the term under the Obama administration has gone unreported.

In 2015, the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System's official website urged patients to "Become a Kung Flu Fighter! Get Your Flu Shot!" The website has been taken down, but a copy of it was retained by an Internet archiving website.

The text was accompanied by an image of a ninja wearing a mask in an airborne, flying-kick posture.

The VA further urged visitors to "Click here to print Kung Flu Fighter poster!"

Also in 2015, the Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center sent a mailer to patients reading: "Kung Flu -- Knock it out before it knocks YOU out!"

The text is accompanied by a cartoon monkey in a karate outfit apparently kicking a virus molecule senseless.

A copy of that mailer remains online. https://www.wallawalla.va.gov/docs/UPDATED_090815_Flu_Brochure_2015-2016.pdf

Film at 11... Think

So?
You do realize that some random administrator in a healthcare system in Tennessee is not the president of the US? Right?

I love how Fox is trying to dredge this up as some sort of dumb "look they used it too!"....

Not only is it different usage, it's some random person. If you want, feel free to find out who they are and fire them. They're probably still at the hospitals.

dumb analogy from a dumb "news" station and posted by a..... cbid member.
