Gail Seymour "Hal" Halvorsen also known as "Uncle Wiggly Wings" a little positive history.
A pilot during the Berlin airlift, he dropped candy to children in Berlin. During a warmer point in the cold war the commies cut off railroad and road access to Berlin in order to starve them away from the west. Berlin was supplied with food and fuel with around the clock air lifts of food and fuel.
During the 15-month airlift (Operation Vittles), American and British pilots delivered more than 2 million tons of supplies to the city. But it was Halvorsen's decision to airdrop candy to children (Operation Little Vittles) that clinched an ideological battle and earned him the lasting affection of a free West Berlin. Today, Halvorsen is affectionately known by Berliners and many around the world as as the Candy bomber.
