Charging documents filed in a Broward County court allege that the Fort Lauderdale officer, Steven Pohorence, 29, intentionally struck or touched the protester.

A Fort Lauderdale police officer captured on video last month appearing to push over a kneeling protester who had her hands up was charged with battery on Tuesday, authorities said.

Charging documents filed in Broward County circuit court allege that the officer, Steven Pohorence, 29, intentionally struck or touched the protester on May 31.

The charge, a first-degree misdemeanor, was filed after an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and carries a maximum sentence of one year in jail, the office of state attorney Michael Satz said in a statement.

The demonstration, held in the wake of George Floyd’s May 25 death while in Minneapolis police custody, began on a Sunday afternoon with hundreds of protesters peacefully gathering at a park in Fort Lauderdale, NBC Miami reported.

Officials blamed “agitators” after tensions erupted between authorities and demonstrators, but video showed Pohorence yelling at protesters who were kneeling around him just before the event escalated, the station reported.

After Pohorence, who is white, pushed the 19-year-old woman, who is Black, a second officer who is also Black could be seen pushing Pohorence away from the protester.

Fort Lauderdale Police Chief Rick Maglione commended the second officer, Krystle Smith, saying she did “what you are supposed to do.”

“When you see either adrenaline or emotion or some kind of interaction going south ... that is our job” to intervene, Maglione said, according to the station.

Have you seen or heard the body cams of them? They thought they were off (disturbing) the commented with glee about shooting people and begging for more targets.

Yep he pushed her. Was he reacting to be hit in the back by an object or just taking out aggression. From the video it’s impossible to tell. Either way, many more officers are leaving the force and it’s becoming more and more difficult to find replacements.

Maybe we'll get/find another recording. I don't think the cops' cameras have been released.

Agreed

While on the subject, who knows what transpired in the hours and more importantly the minutes prior to the incident. If one attends an event where a percentage of the protesters have acted aggressively then its unwise to think that even if you’re being peaceful an officer my still mistake you from the others.

kinda ironic that there are ample instances of police brutality occurring in response to protests of police brutality...

The what happened prior to video seems to be the excuse of the day.

I hope many resign and the hiring process culls the herd a bit better. I’m still not letting them in my house or on my property if I can help it and will video every interaction to prevent the group lies from sticking. I’ll make sure I record what happened earlier too. Wouldn’t it be nice if they couldn’t turn off body cams.

I am tired of dirty cops. I do not believe the police are systemically racist. I do believe the police are systemically dirty. As far as I am concerned any cop who allows a cop who did something criminal to hide behind the blue wall of silence is a dirty cop. Any cop who says we don't know what happened before the video is a dirty cop. Any cop who quits because justice is being demanded is a dirty cop. I don't work for the cops. They work for me. There is a way to fix this. People with real power use their power as a hammer a force the issue. A phone call here, a phone call there. Hey mister mayor, you aren't going to fix this? Maybe the next mayor will. By the way, your challenger will have heavy weight pack money available. Could be a totally different phone call. Any of you that don't think money talks is naive. Money runs every country. It is the only common denominator.
