FSU (Florida State University) are known as the "Seminoles". That is the name of the predominant indian tribe living in Florida before their land was stolen and they were marched from from Florida to west of the mississippi river (Trail of Tears) onto reservation land they had no idea how to live on. The reason I bring this up is that the university has taken the position that its use of the Tribal actually honors the seminole tribe and making Chief Osceola, the legend by Seminole Chief, as their mascot. Can't wait to see how this all plays out here. I hope they don't change their name.

I recall hearing/reading that there is something akin to a partnership between the school and the tribe...

I heard some guy already trademarked all the potential new names that have been bandied about.
Oh, you would like to be the Washington Red Tides?
What's it worth to ya?

That, my friends, is American ingenuity.

"They say their mascots are honoring us and we say it is not.
It should just be enough that we say it is not, but it never is"

and

"The Indigenous are not your mascots. We are living people that are still here and not something just named in passing in your history books...
...We were primarily farmers and fishermen here in Massachusetts...
...when all these mascots depict us as warriors, I think of how we were trying to protect our land and way of life from Colonists"

I need no more convincing.

I thought of that when reading it.
But these things are never unanimous.

sometimes Jews refer to themselves as MOT, members of the tribe, but since a couple are lost tribes, I don't think they got asked either...

This happened right after Algore invented the internet. Some dude bought website names like Americanairlines.com and then extorted cash to sell it to them.
I think the courts eventually told the guy he had no right to do so.

Go to Foxwoods and/or Mohegan Sun.

Plenty of warriror tributes to gaming.

All I ask for is consistency.

I knew a guy who made a living doing that. He charged a reasonable enough amount to ever have anyone decide to sue him. They came to him and asked to buy the website, so extortion would be hard to prove in court.

The picture on the Washington Thin Skin's helmet and the name reds skins was given the ok by a local Indian tribe. They gave it their blessings. Now in 2020 we got dindus and soy boys who don't even watch the NFL get butt hurt over a picture and name.
