my L4/5 was herniated. Not enough bedtime in the world was gonna make it retreat.
Neurosurgeon (not orthopedic) did the job.
25 years later, it's the one thing that doesn't hurt.

And even now I still do some of what the PT had me doing back then. Once the surgery is done, the cause is corrected/healed. But pain can stay around if one does not continue to keep the surrounding and supporting muscles strong with the PT prescribed exercises.

L4/5 caused tremendously disabling sciatic pain...gone.

How did you find out it was actual herniated? MRI or was it obviously sticking out?

MRI

I wanted and needed my life back.
Interview with the neurosurgeon was interesting, almost like I had to give him a reason to believe in my sincerity.

His point was that once the offending disc was removed (not really quite like that) the cause was cured. After that it was up to the patient. (I also had lots of stenosis cleaned out once opened).

Before he agreed to the surgery he asked a ton of questions related to my motivation in seeking out his services.
I told him I needed to get back to my Tuesday night basketball game, I needed to be able to get in and out of a car without crying in order to support my family (in-home sales) and that despite being a bad golfer, at the age of 42 I wanted to continue to play.

He (being like 12 years old) said, "there's no reason you can't continue to play poorly".
That closed the deal. Very funny line.

I asked what convinced him to take me on. His concern was mostly that in his experience, a lot of patients would go to the RX therapy sessions for a couple of weeks and then never do the program.
A year later they are sitting in their lazy boys with remotes in their hands cussing him out.
But he believed I wanted it badly enough to do the post operative work.

Originally he didn't prescribe PT. He believed in me so much that he gave me exercises and walking goals and then would see me every couple of weeks. He said 98.2% of patients only do rehab when they have to drive to a facility, odd as it seems, but that almost all the work done at those places could be duplicated at home with cans of soup instead of 1 lb weights etc.

There is another story about being attacked by a dog on a rehab walk, but the main points are the same. The patient has to be motivated as the surgeon can only create the opportunity.

Rain and scattered thunderstorms in the forecast next two days.

Glad I'm using my parent's camper with a large living room and TV. Otherwise we're stuck in my bed watching movies on my laptop.

Should have two nice days afterwards.

Kinda chilly too. Helps with the shower buildings being closed.

Something I try to put out there for all my open heart patients.

Most just see it as "im fixed, back to life as usual" no... you're not fixed, we gave the opportunity to repair and regenerate now the hard part starts.

Do the hard part thoroughly or you will be sorry and will still end up having to do it later.

made a little money on my fanduel ufc bets last night... going into the last 3 fights, I was in 25th place out of about 500 people... I had 2 fighters left to fight and everyone above me only had one... so I was definitely in the running for first... and then my one fighter that no one else really had passed out in the hallway prior to his fight and they cancelled... ended up 30th...

mighty morphin power ranger time in the garage...

They are all trained to be weird like that. I had a similar experience with the one I did not like and my clients always had the same experience with all of them. It's unreal.

What were you shooting?

My oldest brother's first wife got started with .22 since it didn't have too much kick and worked her way up.

Checking in from the campsite.

Sudden rainstorm for about 30 minutes and then sun back out.

So now everything is wet, its humid as hell, firewood is soaked (and so are we) firepit is under a few inches of standing water. Every camping trip.

Place is still packed too. Usually Sunday nights clear out and we're nearly alone but theres been a steady stream of new campers coming in to fill every site that emptied earlier today.

Oh, and they closed the showerhouses cause of covid. Can get in a bus and ride down to the creek for a canoe trip with 50 people, but can't take a shower.

It's 106 at 6pm and somehow the wife convinced me to slow grill boneless skinless chicken thighs. I guess it really is 45 minutes of time to drink a beer and escape the small child noise.

9mm which she should be able to handle, but I've borrowed the FIL's 22lr revolver for that very reason.

Up early for a short 1mile swim. Then an am meeting with china....

So I made the 3rd batch of cold brew yesterday... 8 scoops of coffee, steeping at 4C for about 16hours, no ice added at the beginning. That's just not enough time at 4C. Coffee is still way too weak, looks like tea. And since I'm too unmotivated to have multiple carafes, I'm just going to have to steep at room temp.

Ah well.
