Roosters don't lay eggs

Does a rooster not laying eggs make those 5 eggs disappear? Or are there still 5 eggs, just from unknown provenance?
And if a thief gives you 3 eggs, do you have 3 more eggs? Or are you just holding 3 eggs someone else owns? Did the thief steal these eggs or is he just a car thief?

So at one point in time you had 4 eggs..... maybe ("if"? for a past tense?)
A thief is either currently giving you 3 eggs, or regularly gives you 3 eggs (but hasn't necessarily yet)... so you either have 3 eggs in your possession, or will be handed 3 eggs in a regular period. Whether these eggs are now yours or not is indeterminate.
Another 5 eggs appear mysteriously, either once right now, or at a regular time. You attribute these eggs to a rooster, but that's impossible. However, the origin of these eggs shouldn't alter their existence.

The only thing that one could say with certainty is that the 5 eggs which the author attributes to their rooster must actually exist.
Their use of a present indefinite tense however does not tell us whether these 5 eggs have occurred now, or perhaps occur on some regular basis (perhaps the 4 eggs identified in the past tense were the remaining eggs from the last time the "rooster" gave them to him)....

So all we know is that either right now, or not now but on a regular basis, 5 eggs appear in his possession. We cannot say whether they have appeared in the current present.

"IF" you had 4 eggs is subjective, so, theoretically, you MAY NOT have 4 eggs.
A thief gives you 3. Three what ? Eggs? Dollars? Cookies?
So . . . There is no definitive numerical answer.

Basically, in the same ballpark as Victor's answer, except my answer would be a "single, (possibly a double), whereas Victor's would definitely be a "Grand Slam".

The number of eggs is undefined. Not between 0 and 12, rather between 0 and infinity.
