Net zero regulation: Russia will replace all the U.S. oil Biden wants to ban

U.S. President Joe Biden’s push to slash carbon emissions may inadvertently give a short-term boost to energy companies in one of the world’s biggest polluters.

Investors are betting that Russian oil giants such as Lukoil PJSC, Rosneft PJSC and Tatneft PJSC will rally as they mop up market share from rivals in the U.S. and and other countries seeking to switch to clean energy. Russia is the world’s fourth-biggest carbon emitter, but unlike other major polluters, the government doesn’t have a plan to transition away from fossil fuels. Instead, its state-owned energy companies benefit from some of the world’s lowest production costs and tax breaks, making them well placed to gain in the short term.

President Joe Biden’s administration threw the director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) under the bus after she suggested that teachers could return to classrooms before being vaccinated.

“There is increasing data to suggest that schools can safely reopen and that safe reopening does not suggest that teachers need to be vaccinated in order to reopen safely,” CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said at a Feb. 3 press briefing. “Vaccination of teachers is not a prerequisite for the safe reopening of schools.”

White House press secretary Jen Psaki responded to Walensky’s statements later that same day, telling reporters that the CDC Director’s comments were not official guidance and that she was speaking in her “personal capacity.”

President Biden issued a warning Wednesday to his appointees that a hostile workplace will not be allowed in his administration.

Addressing approximately 1,000 political appointees during a virtual swearing-in ceremony on his first day in the White House, Biden said: “I’m not joking when I say this: If you ever work with me and I hear you treat another colleague with disrespect, talk down to someone, I will fire you on the spot. No ifs, ands or buts.”

That message echoes the theme of national unity that Biden made during his inaugural address earlier in the day.

“Without unity, there is no peace, only bitterness and fury,” Biden said during his speech, adding, “Politics doesn’t have to be a raging fire, destroying everything in its path. Every disagreement doesn’t have to be a cause for total war.”

Under former President Trump, administration officials, including the president himself, seemed to revel in political battles and personal attacks, directed at both Democrats and even fellow Republicans, using tweets and media appearances to insult their rivals. Trump was notoriously rude to officials after — or even before — they left the administration, demeaning them as weak, stupid or traitorous.

On day one of his term of office, Biden signaled a different approach.

“Everybody is entitled to be treated with decency and dignity. That’s been missing in a big way the last four years,” Biden told the appointees he swore in.

That was then. Now?

You’ve got to admire the moxie of the Biden administration planting this story with the willing dupes at People, knowing full well what was coming: an explosive story in Vanity Fair detailing TJ Ducklo’s ugly side. As it turns out, Ducklo is angry, vile and misogynistic – so much so that even Vanity Fair, prone to writing their own fluff pieces, couldn’t ignore it. It seems Politico reporter Tara Palmeri and a male colleague decided to contact Ducklo and his girlfriend for a comment on the People article. Here’s what happened next:

“But instead of calling the male reporter who initially contacted him, Ducklo tried to intimidate Palmeri by phone in an effort to kill the story. “I will destroy you,” Ducklo told her, according to the sources, adding that he would ruin her reputation if she published it.”

The rest of his rant cannot be printed here, but let’s just say TJ Ducklo is no romantic hero.

The ball was now in Joe Biden’s court. After all, Biden had promised his staff on Inauguration Day: “I’m not joking when I say this: If you ever work with me and I hear you treat another colleague with disrespect, talk down to someone, I will fire you on the spot. No ifs, ands or buts.” It was a chance for Biden to show the courage of his convictions, but, despicably, he instead gave Ducklo the mild punishment of one week off without pay. Oh, and he also had to apologize to Palmeri. Kind of.

This is what passes for a serious punishment in the Biden White House. Pressy Secretary Jen Psaki, for whom Ducklo works, could have lived up to her “boss girl” goals by sending her schoolyard bully underling packing. But, instead, she rather weakly stated that his unprofessional and threatening behavior didn’t “meet our standard, it doesn’t meet the president’s standard” for firing. There seems to be a lack of standards here altogether.

Biden and Psaki’s handling of TJ Ducklo was inept and foolish. He could have, and should have, been made an example of — especially in this post-#MeToo world where even liberal men are sometimes held accountable for their bad behavior. Shame on them for allowing anti-hero TJ Ducklo to remain in a privileged position.

The rest of his rant cannot be printed here, but let’s just say TJ Ducklo is no romantic hero.

Biden Moves to Reengage With Palestinians


The Biden administration is moving slowly but surely toward reengaging with the Palestinians after a near total absence of official contact during former President Donald Trump's four years in office.

As American officials plan steps to restore direct ties with the Palestinian leadership, Biden's national security team is taking steps to restore relations that had been severed while Trump pursued a Mideast policy focused largely around Israel, America's closest partner in the region.

For the second time in two days, Biden's administration Tuesday categorically embraced a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, something Trump had been purposefully vague about while slashing aid to the Palestinians and taking steps to support Israel's claims to land that the Palestinians want for an independent state.

The State Department said Tuesday a U.S. delegation attended a meeting of a Norwegian-run committee that serves as a clearinghouse for assistance to the Palestinians. Although little-known outside foreign policy circles, the so-called Ad Hoc Liaison Committee has been influential in the peace process since Israel and the Palestinians signed the Oslo Accords in 1993.

"During the discussion, the United States reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to advancing prosperity, security, and freedom for both Israelis and Palestinians and to preserve the prospects of a negotiated two-state solution in which Israel lives in peace and security alongside a viable Palestinian state," the State Department said in a statement.

"The United States underscored the commitment to supporting economic and humanitarian assistance and the need to see progress on outstanding projects that will improve the lives of the Palestinian people, while urging all parties to avoid unilateral steps that make a two-state solution more difficult to achieve," it said.

U.S. participation in the meeting followed a Monday call between Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Israel's foreign minister in which Blinken stressed that the new U.S. administration unambiguously supports a two-state solution. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is close to Trump, has eschewed the two-state solution.

Biden spoke to Netanyahu last week for the first time as president after a delay that many found suspicious and suggestive of a major realignment in U.S. policy. Blinken, however, has spoken to Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi twice amid ongoing concern in Israel about Biden's intentions in the region, particularly his desire to reenter the Iran nuclear deal.

In Monday's call, Blinken "emphasized the Biden administration's belief that the two-state solution is the best way to ensure Israel's future as a Jewish and democratic state, living in peace alongside a viable and democratic Palestinian state," State Department spokesperson Ned Price said.

The Trump administration had presented its own version of a two-state peace plan, though it would have required significant Palestinian concessions on territory and sovereignty.

The Palestinians, however, rejected it out of hand and accused the U.S. of no longer being an honest peace broker after Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital, moved the U.S. embassy to the city from Tel Aviv, cut off aid to the Palestinian Authority, closed the Palestinian diplomatic mission in Washington and rescinded a long-standing legal opinion Israeli settlement activity is illegitimate under international law.

REDUCING ‘REAL RISKS’: Nearly three dozen House Democrats on Monday called on Biden to relinquish his sole authority to launch nuclear weapons, in the latest appeal to reform the command-and-control structure so that no single person can initiate a nuclear war.

House Resolution 1, Democrats’ 791-page bill, would touch virtually every aspect of the electoral process — striking down hurdles to voting erected in the name of election security, curbing partisan gerrymandering and curtailing the influence of big money in politics.

Republicans see those very measures as threats that would both limit the power of states to conduct elections and ultimately benefit Democrats, notably with higher turnout among minority voters.

The stakes are prodigious, with control of Congress and the fate of President Joe Biden’s legislative agenda in the balance. But at its core, a more foundational principle of American democracy is at play: access to the ballot.

“This goes above partisan interests. The vote is at the heart of our democratic system of government,” said Fred Wertheimer, president of the nonpartisan good government organization Democracy 21. “That’s the battleground. And everyone knows it.”

Barriers to voting are as old as the country, but in more recent history they have come in the form of voter ID laws and other restrictions that are up for debate in statehouses across the country.

Rep. John Sarbanes, a Maryland Democrat who sponsored the bill, said that outside of Congress “these aren’t controversial reforms.” Much of it, he noted, was derived from the recommendations of bipartisan commissions.

Yet to many Republicans, it amounts to an unwarranted federal intrusion into a process that states should control.

“It imposes from Washington, D.C., a one-size-fits-all regulatory scheme on each state,” Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., said Monday during a hearing on the bill. “What’s worse, it does this even though states have been traditionally allowed to generally run elections however they see fit.”

Citing Congress’ constitutional authority over federal elections, Democrats say national rules are needed to make voting more uniform, accessible and fair. The bill would mandate early voting, same-day registration and other long-sought changes that Republicans reject.

It would also require so-called dark money political groups to disclose anonymous donors, create reporting requirements for online political ads and appropriate nearly $2 billion for election infrastructure upgrades. Future presidents would be obligated to disclose their tax returns, which former President Donald Trump refused to do.

Debate over the bill comes at a critical moment, particularly for Democrats.

Acting on Trump’s repeated false claims of a stolen election, dozens of Republican-controlled state legislatures are pushing bills that would make it more difficult to vote. Democrats argue this would disproportionately hit low-income voters, or those of color, who are critical constituencies for their party.

The U.S. is also on the cusp of a once-in-a-decade redrawing of congressional districts, a highly partisan affair that is typically controlled by state legislatures. With Republicans controlling the majority of statehouses the process alone could help the GOP win enough seats to recapture the House. The Democratic bill would instead require that the boundaries be drawn by independent commissions.

Previous debates over voting rights have often been esoteric and complex, with much of the debate in Congress focused on whether to restore a “preclearance” process in the Voting Rights Act that the Supreme Court invalidated in 2013. For decades, it had required certain states and jurisdictions with large minority populations and a history of discrimination to get federal approval for any changes to voting procedures.

The new goal is 117,000 youths and children, up from the 30,000 “Unaccompanied Alien Children” (UAC) migrants who were brought to the border by coyotes during 2020, and well above the record inflow of 76,000 delivered in 2019.

The goal of 117,000 was leaked to Axios as part of a media campaign in which administration officials argue they have no moral choice but to let the migrants into the United States. The campaign is also intended to fend off theatrical criticism from the left, whereby progressives say the youth and children do not need to be kept in the shelters where they are provided with health screens and the legal paperwork needed to get jobs and residency.

There is a catastrophic crisis that could add another quarter of a million to the population of illegal aliens in this country in less than a year.

If these dramatic consequences don’t add up to a crisis, then the Titanic is still just running late. Yet, the secretary of homeland security has said there is no crisis. On camera when asked by a reporter, the president of the United States said there is no crisis.

In fact, in one week, the administration said there is no crisis, reportedly drafted a supplemental appropriation request to deal with the crisis, and blamed the crisis on former President Donald Trump.

The president should be honest with the American people. There is a crisis. The crisis was caused by a raft of open border policies rapidly implemented by this administration (such as stopping construction on the border wall and promoting amnesty for illegal aliens), which in affect are advertisements to attract more illegal immigration.

The president should immediately put a stop to implementing initiatives that proactively attract illegal immigration.

It was really bad and it explains why they’re afraid to have him deliver an address to Congress or do any kind of a real solo press conference, because at this point they have to be afraid this is all going to fall apart if he does anything live and this all becomes too obvious to the American people.

But there’s only so long that they can hold this off. And it’s getting worse, as video today revealed. Biden was holding an event to announce the nomination of two female generals to be promoted to combatant commanders. You could even see he was reading a teleprompter. But it didn’t help, he lost it in the middle.

Guess How CNN Is Describing the Crisis at the Southern Border


Democrats and their cohorts in the media chided President Donald Trump over immigration policies that resulted in holding "kids in cages" and "separating families" at the United States-Mexico border, a claim that lacked nuance. It was something the left repeatedly hammered as inhumane and wrong. But now, roughly six weeks into his administration, President Joe Biden is continuing with a policy that was first established under President Barack Obama.

Biden's holding unaccompanied minors in the administration's "first migrant child facility" – you know, the type of facility that was labeled as "kids in cages" when Trump was in office?

CNN, however, decided to cover the "first migrant child facility" in a way that downplays the severity at the border. Instead of referring to them as "kids in cages," like they have in the past, the network took a more subtle approach.

The number of unaccompanied migrant children in US Border Patrol facilities, which are akin to jail cells and not intended for kids, has reached dramatic highs, according to internal agency documents reviewed by CNN, underscoring the urgent challenge facing the Biden administration.

As of Monday afternoon, President Joe Biden had not yet been briefed by his top aides on the weekend trip, which included a visit to a facility for unaccompanied migrant children in Carrizo Springs, Texas -- the first facility for migrant children to open since Biden took office.


CNN isn't the only network to use this kind of language. The Washington Post did the same thing when they reported on the facility reopening without COVID precautions. The border is so overwhelmed that the administration is rolling back COVID mitigation efforts, like the number of unaccompanied minors that are being housed. The number of beds went from 50 percent capacity to 100 percent capacity.

What's taking place on our southern border is disgraceful and wrong. Biden's soft immigration policies are the reason people are flocking to the United States, even during a pandemic. The media is just doing the administration's dirty work by downplaying the consequences and severity of what's taking place.

The truth is this: most of the facilities these unaccompanied minors are being housed in are short-term facilities. They're designed to hold drug traffickers for short periods of time while they are being processed. Most have a couple of benches, a toilet and a water fountain. That's it. No beds. No showers. Disease was an issue when this was going on back in 2014 and that was without the pandemic going on. Throw in these unsanitary conditions on top of the coronavirus – which the administration refuses to allow Border Patrol to test for – and you have a petri dish for disaster.

Our men and women that protect our southern border deserve better conditions and for the media to speak the truth about the gravity of this situation.

Border Official: 2021 Illegal Immigration On Track To Surpass Past Three Years Combined


John Modlin, the interim chief in charge of the Border Patrol in Tucson, Arizona, revealed in an interview that the surge in illegal immigration at the Southern border has continued to grow over the past few months. Modlin warned that at this rate by the end of the year illegal immigration will surpass the numbers of 2018, 2019, and 2020 combined.

“So right now we’re about a hundred percent over where we were this time, this last fiscal year. We’ve already surpassed in the first four months of this fiscal year. We’ve already surpassed all of 2018. If the flow continues at the rate it is here, by the end of this fiscal year, we will have surpassed ‘18, ‘19 and ‘20, all combined,” Modlin told Sharyl Attkinson, host of “Full Measure with Sharyl Attkinson.”

The influx of illegal immigration has been overwhelming migrant detention facilities. As a result, President Biden has chosen to open child detention facilities to full capacity, despite the risk of COVID-19.

Former ICE Director Tom Homan has blamed the increased illegal immigration on Biden’s “open border” policies.

“We knew this will happen because all the promises Joe Biden has made and he continues to make,” Homan said. “And you know, so this isn’t by accident. This is by design. This is an open border strategy. He has bowed to the left, we lose the border.”

Record 3,200 migrant children stuck in Border Patrol custody, with nearly half held past legal limit


More than 3,200 migrant children were stuck in Border Patrol facilities on Monday, with nearly half held beyond a three-day legal limit, as the Biden administration struggles to respond to the sharp increase in the number of unaccompanied minors crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.

According to government documents obtained by CBS News, nearly 1,400 unaccompanied minors had been held in Customs and Border Protection (CBP) holding facilities for more than three days as of Monday, despite the agency's legal obligation to transfer these children to shelters operated by the U.S. refugee agency within 72 hours of taking them into custody.

Nearly 170 unaccompanied children stuck in Border Patrol custody are under the age of 13, according to the CBP documents.

On February 21, CBP held just nine unaccompanied children past the three-day limit, according to one document, underscoring how the dwindling bed space at the refugee agency's shelters has created a massive backlog of minors waiting in facilities that were largely designed to briefly detain adult men.

As of Monday, the Office of Refugee Resettlement had only about 500 beds available near the southern border for the increasing number of migrant children entering U.S custody, according to a document from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which oversees the refugee agency.

A former Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official said the current number of children in Border Patrol custody is the highest in the agency's history.

“It shall be the policy of my Administration that no more American taxpayer dollars be diverted to construct a border wall,” Biden’s proclamation states. “I am also directing a careful review of all resources appropriated or redirected to construct a southern border wall.”


The surprise was that Biden left the project in a state where not only was there not a wall to protect against smugglers, but there was infrastructure left behind that acted to aid the smugglers the wall was supposed to protect against.

That’s what Sheriff Mark Dannels of Cochise County, Arizona, said anyway. In an appearance on “Fox & Friends” on Friday, the sheriff said illegal immigrants were using an access road that was left when construction was abandoned which made it easier for them to enter.

“When President Biden rescinded the emergency order on the southwest border, it stopped resources and stopped construction on our border,” Dannels told Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade.

“This administration owns this decision,” Dannels said. “And what it’s doing is, it’s forcing us back to 2019, when we had the largest — what I call — crime scene in the country to include the largest humanitarian situation going on,” he said, sharing some of the photos of the “crime scene.”


Danniels talked a bit more about the problems from 2019, “where 141 countries breached our southwest border in the first nine months.”

The sheriff said it was a time where there were “a thousand gang members, 822 assaults on agents, 271 deaths on our border.”

“This is a crime scene and this is what we just put together,” he continued. “We had it under control. This is frustrating. And now it’s going back to 2019. It’s frustrating.”

Cochise County encompasses 83 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border, which makes it a prime target for smugglers, both of the drug and human variety, Fox News reported.

That’s bad enough — but, as Dannels shared in photographs of the half-finished wall, there was infrastructure there that made it easier for illegal immigrants to cross.

The problem is, of course, the pandemic. At least with the current rush at the southern border, most of it is controlled and COVID-19 testing can be done.

Those using access roads to make their way into the United States by evading authorities tend not to stop for testing.

“Nobody is talking about what’s going on at the southwest border when it comes to the health pandemic in this country,” Dannels said.

“And then you look at the public safety aspect of this, it’s upsetting,” he added. “It’s almost like we’re not part of this country, which is very upsetting.”

Now, keep in mind, the Biden administration isn’t doing the best job when it comes to testing those it has in custody. One shelter in Texas found that 25 percent of the migrants dropped off by authorities tested positive for the coronavirus. Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott noted they weren’t alone:

(While there have been no changes from the Trump administration to the Biden administration when it comes to testing migrants for COVID-19, the fact that the current administration is releasing more of them into American communities does indicate a greater risk to Americans.)

Nevertheless, this is what Biden and his administration can control. Because of the fact they’ve abandoned the border wall project, they’re not even bothering to control who enters and who doesn’t.

“It’s a product of politics within policing,” Dannels said. “And I’ve always said that they had no business in our business, in the business of policing what we do on this border in our communities.”

Biden disagrees. The problem is that everything we’ve seen so far indicates his politics with policing will meet with disaster for this country.

However, 124 multi-employer pensions are in “critical and declining” status, according to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation. They’re projected to have insufficient funds to pay full retirement benefits within the next 20 years.

About 1 million workers are in such plans, according to the American Academy of Actuaries.

Until now, the PBGC, a government-sponsored entity, has been able to step in to pay at least partial benefits in the event of a pension failure.

But the agency’s multi-employer program is in bad shape. Its likelihood of insolvency is “very high” in 2026 and a “near certainty” by the end of 2027 due to additional pension failures, according to the PBGC’s most recent projections.

At that time, it won’t be able to guarantee retirement benefits to workers, absent legislative changes, the agency said.
American Rescue Plan

Grants offered by the American Rescue Plan would cover full pension benefits for workers in ailing plans over the next three decades. The relief measure would also reinstate any benefits that had been suspended for recipients.

Multi-employer plan sponsors can apply for the aid through 2025. The PBGC can’t condition the aid on pension changes like benefit reductions or new funding requirements.

The funds must be invested in investment-grade bonds. They, along with any investment earnings, must be segregated from other plan assets.

Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, said the Covid pandemic had worsened the plans’ financial situation.

“It goes back to the fact that these workers didn’t do anything wrong,” Brown told The New York Times on Thursday. “They have earned these pensions.”

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, criticized the measure as a bailout with no strings attached.

“It’s just a blank check, with no measures to hold mismanaged plans accountable,” he said.

The Democrat-led House is expected to vote on the $1.9 trillion relief package Tuesday so President Joe Biden can sign it early in the week.

That's right, those pension funds are too big to fail, like the mismanaged bankrupt blue states and cities. The euphemistically named "American Rescue Plan" should have been called the Too Big To Fail Plan 2.0.
