Amazon Requests In-Person Union Vote in Covid-Hit Alabama

Amazon.com Inc. is asking the National Labor Relations Board to consider having workers vote in person -- rather than by mail -- on a proposal to form a union at an Alabama warehouse.

The company formally requested a postponement of the vote so the labor regulator can reconsider its earlier ruling. Under the current plan, workers will have most of the next two months to vote by mail.

A group of workers at Amazon’s Bessemer, Alabama, warehouse filed paperwork in November for an election to decide whether to be represented by the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, a rare step for workers at a company whose U.S. workforce isn’t unionized. The NLRB, which oversees union votes, earlier this month said the vote would be conducted by mail, citing standards set up during the pandemic to keep workers and staffers safe.

The NLRB didn’t immediately return a request for comment. The union declined to comment.

In documents dated Thursday, Amazon objected to that decision, saying the board had unfairly dismissed the company’s argument that the safety of its facility should be considered separately from the surrounding Jefferson County and the wider state of Alabama, where the Covid-19 positive test rate this month rose above 20%.

Amazon said its proposal for a manual vote would have “fully minimized any risk of transmission.” The NLRB’s decision that mail-only balloting was the safest approach was “based on speculation and conjecture, and without ever balancing the purported risk of virus spread against the public policy that ‘strongly favors’ allowing employees to vote in person,” the company said.

The world’s largest online retailer said that a mail election raised the risk of fraud and the coercion of workers. It also said the process would depress turnout, arguing that as many as 29% of its more than 5,800 employees eligible to vote wouldn’t do so or would return incorrectly completed ballots.

Amazon had proposed holding the election in a heated tent set up in the facility’s parking lot and offered use of software designed to enforce social distancing. The NLRB, in its decision, said conditions were too dangerous for an in-person vote and that such use of the company’s “extensive resources” risked giving workers the impression that government employees conducting the vote were improperly accepting benefits from Amazon.

“The most important factors in my decision are the safety of all election participants and the enfranchisement of all voters,” the NLRB’s acting regional director wrote in the decision. “Both of these factors weigh in favor of a mail ballot election.”

Mail election raises the chance for fraud????? Where does he come up with these silly ideas? I mean, maybe a little fraud, but enough to change the outcome? Only an idiot would think like that.

Lmao. No lefty here but yea this certainly shows evidence of voter fraud in the 2020election. *rolling eyes*. It’s the same tactic this time to try to union bust. Trump lost. It wasn’t particularly close compared to recent presidential elections including the one he won. Stay in fantasy land or come back. It’s up to you.

As for Jeffy you hate me until you love me kiss me baby.

And gates knows a hell of a lot about immunizations. You may not like him, I’m no fan. But he knows the subject. He has direct access to some of the folks I and my team hear from and more. He has for some time. He’s intelligent as hell. He’s personally involved. He’s been working with this stuff a long time and clearly understands mRNA vax. No question. Not as well as the actual researchers and scientists but the dude does understand it wayyyyy more than anyone in here. Not liking someone doesn’t make them misinformed or not intelligent on a subject but accusing them of such makes you so.

Will the silliness ever stop?

Yes, Bill Gates the renowned doctor of Medicine, the head of the CDC...yeah...um college dropout and I'm more apt to believe anything from Dr. Phil before Bill Gates! That jackass can't even keep his software virus free.

UHUHUHUHHUHH...he's so smaht...UHUHUUHUHUHUH!

Huh. You really didn’t read what I said...or understand it. I’m not surprised.

Hint... not as well as the actual researchers and scientists......

But he has made contributions and it wasn’t all just coin. He’s been involved all along the way....personally.

I know you don’t know the big picture but he didn’t just give them windows. You don’t know what you don’t know.

Backpeddle much?

Totally understand what you wrote. It's your belief in him that baffles me. So, because (correct me if I'm wrong here) he ripped off IBM and Apple (obtaining source code from both!) and writes software then overcharges for it for businesses and personal computers and makes scads of money off of it all while dropping out of Harvard University 2 years into it, and with said money starts up a foundation that peddles vaccinations around the globe to countries that couldn't afford them that wound up with major health issues as a result makes him an expert on vaccinations and their disbursement?

WHEW...that's a monster of runons there. I mean BIG picture there. Gigantic. Huge. Biggly.

That's correct. Wouldn't really call it "winning' though. What do you win? I don't get anything.

He's obviously thinking about me soooo damned much he has to type it out. Same for BGZ. He knows what I look like even! I guess I should be thrilled at the attention but I've met most of the posters here that matter. That's good enough for me. I don't sit around wondering what you people look like nor do I GAF. Most likely because I'm busy living my life or doing something constructive. For those keeping score at home on the DrMaddVibe post count - I'm usually working on network traffic studies for baselines and use CBid as a factor, so there's that. At least I'm getting paid to be here 98.2% of the time!!!

IDK...I thought the OP was pretty valid. Everyone wants to vote by mail now and there's no issues with it...we have an election and KAPOW...the guy winning does so in record breaking fashion that he couldn't ever do twice before against an incumbent that set records for voter turnout as well. All the cases were tossed out and never heard by the courts but as Sen. Rand Paul surmised against George Snuffleupagus on a talking head show today...laws were violated. State legislators didn't vote or ratify on voting changes that judges ruled as a-ok. Now, you have one of the wealthiest people on the planet screaming bloody murder about mail-in voting and its a problem? Just sounds all hypocritical if you ask me. Hypocritical.

The election was not stolen. Trump lost. It wasn’t particularly close compared to recent elections. Of course Bezos wants to suppress votes in an effort to squash the union. It’s really pretty easy.

The black angry singer is Angelo Moore, the lead singer for Fishbone. Don't know what you were watching. He is one of the chillest people I've ever met in my life. Thrives on optimism.

So there goes that pipedream up in smoke.

you got it right, it's the old story, boss vs union formation.
Normally the boss would be hailed on these boards...but heads are spinning over the election loss and this boss, though arguably the largest success in the history of Capitalism, happens to be of the liberal persuasion and must be destroyed.

Truth be said I do too. If it’s locally owned I try. For three primary reasons.

1. Sometime I may need something immediately and I want them to still be there.
2. My ocd makes me impatient at times and I want it now.
3. I have relatives that ran variety type stores in North Dakota and Iowa. I saw what wallyworld did to them.

And of course neighbors.

The price needs to be close at least though. The Jeep I want can be had for several grand (5-6) less 3 hours from here. Sorry local guys I told you their offer and you can’t match. I have one more local place to give a chance.

There are a few high volume places that sell them for 5-7% below invoice. Local places try to get MSRP. 10% difference.
