On July 6, 1957, Althea Gibson claims the women’s singles tennis title at Wimbledon and becomes the first African American to win a championship at London’s All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

Gibson was born on August 25, 1927, in Silver, South Carolina, and raised in the Harlem section of New York City. She began playing tennis as a teenager and went on to win the national Black women’s championship twice.

At a time when tennis was largely segregated, four-time U.S. Nationals winner Alice Marble advocated on Gibson’s behalf and the 5’11” player was invited to make her United States National Championships (now known as the U.S. Open) debut in 1950.

In 1956, Gibson’s tennis career took off and she won the singles title at the French Championships (now known as the French Open)—the first African American to do so—as well as the doubles’ title there. In July 1957, Gibson won Wimbledon, defeating Darlene Hard, 6-3, 6-2. (In 1975, Arthur Ashe became the first African American man to win the men’s singles title at Wimbledon, when he defeated Jimmy Connors.)

In September 1957, she won the U.S. Open, and the Associated Press named her Female Athlete of the Year in 1957 and 1958. During the 1950s, Gibson won 56 singles and doubles titles, including 11 major titles.

After winning Wimbledon and the U.S. Open again in 1958, Gibson retired from amateur tennis. In 1960, she toured with the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team, playing exhibition tennis matches before their games. In 1964, Gibson joined the Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour, the first Black woman to do so. The trailblazing athlete played pro golf until 1971, the same year in which she was voted into the National Lawn Tennis Association Hall of Fame.

After serving as New Jersey’s commissioner of athletics from 1975 to 1985, Althea Gibson died at age 76 from respiratory failure on September 28, 2003, at a hospital in East Orange, New Jersey.

Hope you get it figured out... I joke around and everything, but in all seriousness, I'll definitely name a 500 after you if you kill someone...

Yeah Dan. A few of us have a bit of a darker hue to our humor. Would imagine humor in a hospital has some darkness around it. Don’t die or anything. Although Opie pointed out earlier- if you do kill somebody, you can get your name in the title of a 500 thread. There is always a bright side.

I told Althea I was feeling lost
Lacking in some direction
Althea told me upon scrutiny
That my back might need protection
I told Althea that treachery
Was tearing me limb from limb
Althea told me, now cool down boy
Settle back easy, Tim

What's up?
Chiro this morning for my upper back (like T2 or T3). Pain management doctor for follow up on my neck procedure back a few months ago. Still heavily overcast from Elsa. On and off gusts of wind and rain are supposed to clear out today. Only had two pool screen panels blown out, but they were already deteriorated and needing replacement. We escaped relatively well and I am thankful for that.

Lakers players were complaining to Shack because Kobe was hogging the ball to much on his way to a 40-50+ point game. So Shaq told him to start passing the ball and that there was no "I" in team.

Kobe responded quickly, looked at Shack and with a flash of asnger said: "Yeah, I know, but there IS an "m" and an "e" and that spells "me", Mother Fuucker!"

It'd be a good one too! Like "danm's 500 guns a'blazing" or "devious danm's 500 victims and counting" or "danm's 500 souls slayed".... none of those, but something good like that....

Great response for teambuilding consultants selling their nonsense to company management.

I'm guessing that most of the knuckle-draggers here have no clue who Althea Gibson was, and could not care less about her significance....

and definitely would not take the time to read the OP, due to its length, complex sentence structure and topic pertaining to women sports...

If the definition of a knuckle dragger is one who doesn't give 2 $hits about tennis, much less women's tennis, 3rd less what color of skin that they have.... then add me to the bucket.

Of course. I tried to go in after discharge from the ER but they wouldn't let me. Gonna have to work a lot more to pay for all this too once the bills come in. Happened while at work 5-6 years ago and they took me to ER, that was a $3k bill. Last full workup in 2011/12 for it cost me over $10k and yielded no answers. I have terrible health insurance.

Leaving in 5 minutes to go back to work.

Slept great today.
