Regional beers in your neck of the woods

With all the craft beers available these days most areas have a lot of breweries. They are not what I'm talking about. I am talking about the old line regional beers not the brands that have only been around a short while in the big scheme of things. I'm sure there must be many I've never heard of or heard of but never saw. What beers would that be in your area?

Bonesaw is basically brand new and from what I know only has local distribution yet in that category has quickly become #1.
Word is they're about to go national.

So not an old line but keep an eye out, The stout, barley wine & IPAs are my favorites, but nearly all their stuff is excellent.
Pricey, but we drink a fair amount free here at the lounge thanks to a member who's an employee.

We have another member who also works at flying fish who also brings in cases of free suds. Good but not as good.

Membership has it's privileges, beggers can be choosers

Boston/New England:

Can we count Sam Adams as old line yet

Narragansett (fondly known as Nasty Gaggers) was been reborn in Rhode Island a few years ago after being a mainstay for many decades.

Don't know quite how old it is but Geary's out of Maine might qualify, been many years since I last bought their pale ale after many years of doing so.
Long Trail in Maine been around.

In the early 70's I landed in the Finger Lakes area of NY state and was forced to drink Genesee, also Matt's Brewing was not far.

More will come to mind when the drugs I took in the 70's wear off...

Four Peaks Kilt Lifter has been around for some years and was sought after with peeps when they were in town but they sold out to Anheuser-Busch a few years ago so I stopped drinking their stuff. The best local brewery is Wren House but they don't distribute outside the state as far as I know.

Thanks Rick. Been looking for a brewery that is good.

Agree whole-heartedly about Four Peaks.

it was gone for a while but some guy revived the name a few years back and at least he created a lineup of different styles, none great in my opinion but better than that stuff from years ago.
They even have a Summer worthy shandy of Gansett and Del's Lemonade!

Don't drink no more but one of my favorites was Wachusett. Rather popular in this region. Local small time brewery in a town right next door from me. They used to make an nice porter (Black Shack Porter) but it doesn't look like they are doing that one anymore.

https://www.wachusettbrewingcompany.com/

We have a brew pub just a 10 minute walk away. I'd like to try some of their home brews but that wouldn't work well for me. Their food is pretty good, I crave their buffalo chicken.

Back when I lived in WI, Leinenkugel's was a small regional brand. They made a nice Bock. They sold out to Miller (I think) back in the 90's (?) when the microbrew thing was getting popular. Now you can find them any where since Miller took them over.

Another college favorite back in WI was Huber. Their regular stuff sucked but their Bock was good. Something like $10 for a case with returnable bottles. Perfect for a college beer budget. Kicked back many cases of these long necks playing Risk and watching the Packers on Sunday.

Huber. Oooof. I used to buy Huber in college at Southern Illinois. As you said 16oz Returnable bottles. After you turned a case of bottle back in, the new case wound up being only a couple of bucks. I remember the Bock being oddly thick and none of it being good.

Yuengling from Pottsville, PA is the oldest operating brewing company in America, established in 1829. In 2018, by volume of sales, it was the largest craft brewery, sixth largest overall brewery and largest wholly American-owned brewery in the United States. Mostly available on the East Coast and South East but i believe they are working on or have just gone national.

National Bohemian, colloquially Natty Boh originating from Baltimore, eventually purchased by Pabst Brewing Company.

Nearly 90 percent of National Bohemian sales are in Baltimore. currently brewed under contract at the Molson Coors brewing facilities in Albany, GA. and Trenton, OH.; and is also owned by Pabst Brewing Company.

Despite Yuengling being around forever it wasnā€™t a very good beer and the company wasnā€™t very successful. Then they came up with Lager and itā€™s popularity soared. Brewed and distributed just locally they had a huge following with limited capabilities. Then they took over an old Strohs plant in Tampa which enabled them to increase supply to meet demand, but still limited which states it was sold in, up the East Coast. A recent partnership with Molson has allowed them to distribute further west. They are still the oldest American brewing company and largest American owned as well.

If you dig into their history youā€™ll see how they brewed straight through Prohibition and how the day the Prohibition ended they sent President Roosevelt some beer to celebrate the good news. I know many old timers in the area would get prescriptions from their doctors for the beer claiming their porter beer had redeeming values for their healthy wellbeing.

Genesee Beer, Rochester's finest. over 100 years old, the oldest surviving brewing company in the Western side of New York state. I once got sick drinking too much Genesee Cream Ale when I was 21, I was warned.Sick Never touched the stuff since. Their regular beer was like drinking water to me. They make a lot more varieties now, trying to compete with the craft breweries I guess.

agree totally with you, but I understood the op as looking for more regional mainline brewers as opposed to newish craft beer makers...

I used to ask if you wanted me to fetch some Awake for ya but you always said no...now I can't find it. Some version of it with added something is around but it wasn't as good.

had a roommate when I was in Seneca Falls who was from Canandaigua (sp?) and he loved the cream ale. Not me, and the regular crap did taste like water.

Drank a case of Maximus Super one day, that was a mistake. Think it may have been made by Matt's...

some older brand names have been reborn, many only to die out again.

Haffenreffer, don't know if they still make it but that was revived.
Piels- was reborn with "real" draft. no idea if they exist today.

Schaeffer-the one beer to have when you're having more than one...cuz it was sooo light, yech.
Is Knickerbocker still around?
How about Ballantine Ale?

Back in the 70's 80's my brother had a rather extensive beer can collection. I think much of it is still in boxes in the basement of my parent's house.

One set of images seared in my brain is a collection of Olde Frothingslosh cans that sported some annual beauty contest winning babes.

I'm sure there are some that are worth some money to a collector but you'd have to find the person who's willing to buy them.

I remember seeing the boxes in their basement when I flew back for a visit in the spring. I asked them why they still had them. If I remember correctly my parents gave them away to someone - one of my nephews (?), nephews friend (?), the local kid that comes over and mows their lawn and snow blows the driveway (?).... but somehow they ended up back in their basement.

I only digest about half of what my mom says. Very lovable and loving woman but she can talk an ear of corn off of a corn stalk (I just made that up that last part, sounds like a Midwest saying, maybe not but you get the jist).

Good old Iron Shytty beer, if it wasnā€™t for fans collecting their sports themed cans Iā€™m not sure why anyone would buy this awful beer.

Iā€™ve never seen any of broke kids buying Lions Head, seems mom & dad usually send them money to finance their White Claw purchases. Kids these days are spending far more on their vices then when I was a college kid on a budget and buying Yuengling Premium, Rolling Rock and then Keystone was a cheaper alternative to buying Coors Light.

Yuengling Premium was cheap, Yuengling Lager didnā€™t come out until 1987 and then a brewery almost 160 years old became an overnight sensation. RR wasnā€™t too expensive at the time either.

College kid on budget. Huber Bock (as I mentioned in a previous post) was my go to.

Red Bull malt liquor in a 40 oz for like a $1.25 each. A couple of those through a beer bong/hose monster got things going.
Mickey's Fine Malt Liquor (the hand grenades).
Whatever was on tap at the keg party. Self service with a Solo cup. Can't be picky for $2 to buy a cup then all you can drink until the keg was dead.

No officer, we are not selling beer, we are selling cups... the beer is free so we don't need a liquor license... (meanwhile the party goers are scattering like ants). Hopefully the cops just give you a warning and don't confiscate the keg. When they leave we can kill off the keg.

Now youā€™re talking Bucky. Red Bull or the Mickeyā€™s grenades could get you f*&$ed up quickly and cheap.

Who also remembers the beer balls for when you wanted more than a sixes but not a 1/4 or 1/2 barrel?

Mickey gives a real fast buzz, with a little sting to clean your palate.

Rolling Rock as a chaser for Rocken Rye Whiskey,(East coast Boilermakers) always had to walk home after drinking them.

Don't get me started on Beck's, used to freeze them till their slush, drain the beer out put the rest in the fridge for when friends come over, gave them the backwash, I drank the premium stuff. I got two keeper out of a six pack. Now that's good german beer.

You'll know that liquor is quicker; right šŸ„ƒ
