Guess the idea of only 10% of people know how to drive one and are all over 50 should put the kibosh to that.

I think some trucks have electronic, bush-button shifting and modes instead of stick shifts, for changing gears with a load. My wife's four wheel drive/all wheel drive Honda Pilot has those features and more. IMNSHO, Dan needs to buy a new truck and just keep it 10-15 years and he'll always know what condition it's in. Plus, this is a great time to sell his lemon/clunker.

If I had my druthers, I'd buy a manual transmission. The lemon Silverado was my last one. When I went to buy one, they didn't have anything on the lot with standard transmission so I waited a couple weeks for them to find one for me. Pretty much held to this concept until I was doing one hr commutes each way in Boston area traffic.

Converted to smaller commuter cars with auto transmission like Hyundai Sonata, Elantra, Ford Focus. I was putting about 500+ miles/week on them just for getting back and forth to work, kids softball/baseball/soccer games.... Just wanted a small dependable car, nothing expensive since I'd be putting a ton of miles on it.

Had one Sonata (was totaled in a crash), 2 Elentras (one engine blew up because I was lax and didn't change the timing belt when I should have - I can't blame the car for that one), and 3 Focuses (Foci?). I've never had problems with these three models and wouldn't hesitate to buy one again.

My truck has the ability to manually select gears, but it's still an automatic. If you select 4th, it will use 1-4. It's really only useful for downhill engine braking and in situations where you got a lot of wheelspin like deep snow or mud. Its still a complicated transmission with all the things that break. A real manual transmission is so much better. Clutches wear out sure - but they also wear out in automatics.

I think next truck may need to be new so I know what it's been through and stuff. This truck looked new with only 50k miles but I'm thinking that was 50k miles of some really heavy towing.

I looked at the car apps again to get pricing on my truck. They were offering 34k in June. 22k now....

Put a bunch of scorpion peppers and habaneros in the dehydrator. Gonna grind em up and make some beef jerky. Turned it on in the house but had to move it to the garage cause the air was getting too spicy.

Same here. The truth is, humans cannot shift as efficiently as a computer controlled automatic. Sophisticated automatic transmissions are required to meet fuel economy requirements. For trucks am automatic is much better for getting heavy loads moving.

My wife's 1995 six speed manual Camaro Z-28 was fun to drive... for about fifteen minutes. It was a total PITA in traffic.

Last manual I had was an ‘83 280ZX. Loved I, but driving in traffic was a PIA.

I've owned a lot more manual transmission cars than automatics. Honestly the stop n go stuff doesn't bother me as long as it's a lightly sprung clutch. Back when I used to race, I had one of my race cars that was still plated and insured and would occasionally drive it on the street. It was fully caged, really finicky at low rpm, and had a clutch that was pretty much on/off and at least a 30lb pedal throw. THAT was a PITA to drive in traffic. My left calf was significantly larger than my right from 06-14. But a regular car, no problem.

Getting loads going in a heavy truck, yeah automatics are nicer. But once going I'd much prefer a manual. No hunting for gears, no downshifting and spinning up to 5krpm for a hill when it's unnecessary. One gear down, little more throttle and if you lose speed whatever. The auto in cruise will do whatever it takes to hold speed. Without cruise it'll let you lose speed, dog down, and asks for a whole footload of throttle to drop a gear and usually ends up dropping two when it understands what you want. Can manually shift, but again, I'd rather just have a stick and a clutch. I'm in the single digits for mileage regardless, efficiency isn't my goal. I get it's the manufacturer's goal because they have to but let me have my 8mpg and a 5 speed.

I've never owned an auto trans that didn't have problems. I've sent many running cars to junkyards because the trans crapped out. I've changed out more automatic transmissions than I have clutches. I've probably gone through at least 30 cars in my lifetime.

I get the modern ones are better, but no way are they more durable and long lasting vs a manual. There's nothing to break in a manual save for catastrophic failure and wearing out a clutch. Automatics have a dozen solenoids, pressure switches/valves, multiple sensors, loads of electronics etc and one failure renders the entire thing dead. In a manual I can break the teeth off third gear and just shift 2-4 and keep going.

I work my trucks, I just want them to do their part. I don't need anything fancy.

Peppers still going in the dehydrator but I prepped the meats.

Got a 4lb top round roast and sliced it about 1/4" thick. Tossed it in a wet brine with brown sugar, cider vinegar, salt, pepper, onion and garlic powders, chili powder, cumin, worcestershire sauce, some other chit I think. That'll sit overnight, then grind the dried peppers to dry rub the beef strips.

Anyone make jerky here? I'm not sure if I should smoke it for an hour or two first and then put in the dehydrator or just put it straight in the dehydrator. Seems the unit is sitting around 150, so it's safe/cooked with enough time but I'm tempted to smoke it first for more flavor.

I don't make jerky but have been tempted to try. Anyone with a pulse should like jerky.

Total uneducated opinion on the tropic, I'd say smoke it.

Yeah. I'm gonna hit em with some smoke before I dry. Should maybe probly look at some recipes. I've made jerky before, 20 years ago when I worked at a butcher shop. We'd wet brine overnight and then drape the strips on the rods in the cold smoker, only run smoke for an hour but hold 150 for 8-10 hours if I remember right. I'd set it up at the end of the day and the morning crew did the rest.

Damn. I can't stop sneezing and coughing.

Just ground up the dried scorpions and seasoned the meat. Laid em out on the smoker for a bit. Was gonna brine overnight but I napped on the couch and needed something to do. They can dehydrate overnight instead.

This chit gonna be HOT. Ground em up outside to avoid the irritation but my eyes and nose and lungs are feeling it all. Even my ear holes are moist.

Gonna smoke for 30-60 minutes. I don't want them to cook, just take on some smoke flavor. Closed all the dampers once I got it lit and smokey. Reading 180 and falling, so im good.

Sweating a little bit just being outside.

The sweat is activating the pepper dust in my beard and eyebrows n stuff.

This stuff is no joke. I can't wait till the jerkys done.

They're insanely hot. Might be beyond my limit. When I put the pepper dust on them I only dusted the top tray in the smoker, anything on the bottom caught a little runoff but they aren't red/orange like the ones that were on the top. I tasted one from the bottom.

I think maybe I shouldn't have used all the peppers. I think there were about 15 scorpions and 6 habaneros. The habaneros are fine for me, but maybe 3-4 scorpions would've been plenty.

I did a brief stint in low/mid management.

It was awful. Everyone above you hates you if everyone below you likes you. If the higher ups like you, the ones below you do not. It's impossible to get balance. You are blamed for everything from both sides. I quit after one of the machine operators stabbed me.

The hospital is constantly trying to get me to take a management position. At least 2x/yr I'm getting emails and phone calls asking me to fill a management job that's opening. I tell them no every time but they keep trying.

That describes part of the way management was at the law firm I worked at for 9 years. On top of that, I'd get conflicting orders/rules, after the fact, that made no sense. I was a serious team player for 5 or so years, then said fuggit. Did myown thing and figure out work-arounds to stupid rules. Major support staff turnover too. Just tried to do what I thought was right then and finally got the nerve and capital to go out on my own.

8-Track, when this job is over, in several years, get a job you will like. It's life altering.

Bad bosses are a PITA, that said, I preferred a competent asshole to an incompetent nice one.

For bosses that assign conflicting/impossible projects, putting everything, especially roadblocks, on a whiteboard that is in full view.

Nothing.

I rarely ever buy jerky. Pretty much only buy it at gun shows from a dude that's always there selling wild game jerkys.

Best jerky I ever had was from a small meat processing company in De Motte, owned by the father of the girl I was dating at the time. This also scared the chit out of me

Looks like the fishing season is mostly over. (Maybe a charter or two for me)

Buddy is taking apart his boat. Seat is out, bait tank is out, and we'll be tearing out the T-top and center console in a couple hours. His boat is a 1991 Parker Center Console. Fiberglass doesn't rot, so the hull is solid as a rock. Gas tanks leaking, though... no bueno.

Gotta cut a hole in the floor to get it out... then take it to a shop in San Diego where they'll fabricate another one for him using the old one as the template. Then we have to reinstall the tank, redo the floor, and reassemble.

He's got a 2006 Yamaha 250 on the back that has over 4000 hours on it. I imagine that's next.
