True, especially if installed outside where no chimney is required, inside, most cannot use the same piping as an old tank heater, the spicy new stuff is about $18/foot here, no telling how much today or on the West coast.
About 5 or soo years ago we replaced one gas water heater in the crawlspace, 10+ feet, for about $2900. It had to be "professionally" installed to get a warranty. We have low calcium/magnesium water, but out west, they do require an annual acid flush.
Note: For anyone with a tank water heater, there is a sacrificial anode that should be replaced every few years. They screw into the top of the tank. It's about a two foot long magnesium road. They even make chain like replacements if there is a floor near the top of the tank.
