They just ended up staring at me from the corner of the room. They have all been donated, one by one, to the local schools so someone can make it sing.
It's been about 3 months now without a guitar staring at me... might be time to buy one again so I can learn to play it
(Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results).
Not quite the same but in my much younger days, I similarly thought that if I bought a guitar expen$ive enough, I’d force myself to play it. This was back in the ‘70s so at the time, I was looking to buy a pre-CBS Fender Strat. Prices from Manny’s of New York were $1,000 to $1,200. I didn’t really have the dough but figured if I could save my nickels and dimes like how I saved for my JBL speakers, I could pull it off. I mean, who didn’t want a pre-CBS Strat, right?
But after a few months, I kinda lost the urge. Did look at a Gibson Cherry Red ES335 12-string but the guy was asking $700 for it and while I had the money, really didn’t want a 12-string. Hadda take my buddy, Al, to test out the guitar so felt kinda weird that the guy that was looking to buy, didn’t even know how to play. Ultimately I put the money into my Road Runner (…hey, I was 20-something years old, long-term was not in my wheelhouse…).
Around this time, when I went to work at Records Hawaii and we sold Aria acoustic guitars, I vowed to learn a new chord every night I worked. However, without a guitar at home to practice on, that effort lasted for only about a month. I should have just bought one with my employee discount and who knows, I mighta actually become a real guitar player. Hindsight is 20/20.
In the late ‘70s I actually did buy (…at least in name…) a ‘60s era Telecaster with a Bigsby vibrato. Long story but I bought it so my friend Al could have it. Basically I fronted the purchase of the guitar and Al eventually paid me back. Think I strummed a chord or two before turning it over to him.
Have had other efforts to learn but even when my friend Vernon loaned me his Epiphone 335 and practice amp, I barely picked it up. Guess I’m just a wannabe player….
