So, which brands should I avoid on here (like Graycliff)?

Hey guys, knew to this site. I’ve been reading the forum though and saw that the Graycliffs on CB aren’t real Graycliffs. Are there any other brands I should avoid from CB due to them not being authentic?

I haven't encountered any stuff I avoid because I think they're fake. CBid just sells a lot of cigars, so manufacturing defects and problems have a lot more chances for exposure. Even the Graycliffs, I don't know if they're "real," but some of them are decent daily smokes or yard gars.

Just please use the Lot Watch function to get an idea of the market price so that you don't overpay and keep driving the prices on here higher and higher. Angel Cursing

A quick, off-the-top-of-my-head list:

CAO
Gurkha
La Perla
Rocky Patel

Many of the cigars from those brands found on this site are licensed in name only. The true blend has been changed so you won't get the true intent of the original blend.

CAO and RP?? Really?? That seems weird for those brands to do that since they’re big operations and not very expensive

I new you were knew, so welcome aboard! Forget the Graycliffs and I suggest the Gurkha’s, they’re as authentic as could be and if you’re lucky enough to catch a rare sale you just might get them 95% off MSRP.

I’ve easily had a hundred Graycliffs from Cbid and have no issue… they are “real” graycliffs… only certain lines are rolled at the graycliff factory in the Bahamas, others are licensed to larger rollers. This is not an uncommon practice as many brands commission other rollers. The blend is still done by graycliff. Now in the case of Ghurka… they simply license the name and are not involved in all blending.

Don't avoid any cigars that you think look good and sound good to you. If you want to try them, then try them. Don't listen to anybody elses opinions about what you should stay away from. People will answer and give their opinions, if you ask them, which is what good discussion is all about. But really, you should decide for yourself what you like and don't like. You might possibly miss out on finding a good cigar that you would enjoy, just because someone else said that they don't like them. I've bought cigars before based on good reviews, or a good recommendation, which when I smoked them, I was sorry I ever bought them. Buy and smoke what you like and what you want.

I doubt very highly that any of the cigars on CB are fake. The sight is owned and run by Cigars International. They're the largest online cigar retailer in the world. They own SEVERAL cigar/tabacco sites as well as several brick-and-morter stores around the country. There are few cigar retailers that I would trust more than CI. As for what to look for - I agree with JGKAMIN - its tough to go wrong with a Guhkha. I'd also suggest looking at CAOs, Rocky Patels and Olivas (assuming you're not looking for something in the Cohiba/Montecristo range).

I've got to agree with LeeBot here. I've only been a member on this site for a short while as well, but I can't tell you how many times i've seen people bid an auction price up above the retail selling price for the exact same item on CI's regular website. Just insane. Frying pan

Gurkhas are one of those cigars that people either like alot or dislike alot. There really aren't many people that I know that can 'take or leave' Gurkhas. I happen to be one of those people who likes them. Its all good my friend. That's why there are more than 5 brands on the market. Herfing

You can buy the same model gurkha from 5 different places and get 5 different cigars.

Buy the same model a year apart and it'll be a completely different cigar.

There's no consistency in that brand's model lines.

I've had many that came in grab bags or cheap drunken bids and stuff. I've had a lot I enjoyed and a lot I did not. But one thing stuck out even with my noob palate, they were inconsistent. Aside from construction issues, if it burned well the "excelsior" cigar from here would taste and burn totally different from an "excelsior" from another store.

Then there's their marketing model which is totally dishonest. Claiming to be the best and always offering up your product at 75% off is a red flag.

Funny I had 5 plus Gurkha legend perfecto that were very good. Grabbed 5 more. Different smoke altogether. I’ll try them again someday. I won’t buy any more Gurkha though. I guess I thought everyone hated the brand because they didn’t know about the 2001 Then I learned maybe the old heads knew more than I thought I did.

Avoid Alec Bradley Prensado Fumas Churchill !!! They suck the description of those cigars are way off !!! I was looking for a throw away smoke . Something I can light up and smoke and don't care if I finish it, But this smoke is better if you never light up and just throw it away. It smokes like it's a short filler . **** get all over your teeth . Don't pay more than a dollar for this bundle !!! The description on these cigars are a BIG FAT LIE !!!

As a cigar god, I would have expected you to know that the word "fumas" means scraps, leftovers, etc. In other words, not long fillers. It was right in the name.

I am losing faith in my cigar god...

Thank God!
You saved me!
I was about to buy a box or two of those.
I cant believe they would “lie” when describing a short filler cigar.

Taken from another (...competitor...) website:

"WHAT IS A FUMA?

The word fuma means “to smoke.” A fuma cigar, at its most basic, is one made from leftover tobacco used to make premium, long-filler cigars. In Cuba, these scraps would be taken by rollers and made into cigars that they would take home and smoke. A fuma, essentially, started out as the cigar of the torcedor (roller). The filler could be short or a mix of long and short – what’s known as a “Cuban Sandwich.” While the fuma would traditionally be finished with a pigtail, that’s not necessarily the case today. And, while you’re unlikely to find them for a quarter, fumas are still a bargain, often having a similar flavor to the cigars into which the long-filler went to make a premium smoke."

Upon further reflection, I think this god may be in the god union and it's just simply to much work to fire him. So, they let him keep the title but he only gets some minor powers like the ability to occasionally cause a toilet to clog, every eighteenth time he makes eggs they come out perfect, and one time at the craps table he can cause a moderately hot girl in a low cut dress to have a nip slip when she leans over to grab the dice. ONE time.

Ordinarily I've liked Rocky Patels over the years...and one of my all-time favorite cigars is their 20th Anniversary. I also have enjoyed Vintage 1992 (black band), Royal Vintage (purple band), and their Flor de San Andres. However, much to my unpleasant surprise I recently decided to try a newer RP offering: the Royale. Bad move. The CB description for this cigar makes it sound like the most luscious stick on the planet. Sorry fellas, it is most definitely not. The first one I smoked was gross. Foul, actually...couldn't bring myself to finish it. Then I tried a second, thinking the first might have been an outlier. Nope. That one sucked just as bad as the first one. Good thing I only bought a 5-pack, the other three are going in the trash TODAY. Zero stars for Rocky Patel Royale.

I don't think we will see cigar god back here anytime soon... It's too bad, we could have used a deity around these parts. I mean, we need someone to shoot a lightning bolt at Tony from time to time...
